I need to do a quick overnight stop on the New England Hwy somewhere north of Tamworth. I'm just putting the swag under my awning and don't need facilities. Any suggestions? On the way back I'm looking for the same just north of Port Macquarie. I'm not looking to venture too far off the highway for these 2 stops as I just need to sleep. I can scan Wikicamps but would welcome any suggestions from EO forumites. Cheers.

Gday
In the early sixties, i spent a few nights at Moonbi Lookout. Things may have changed since then .

If you pull off far enough off the side of the road, dont have a raging bonfire and clean up you'll be hard up to get pinged.

Hi Michael,
Bendemeer north of Tamworth is a good spot for a night.
Look it up on Wikicamps.

Bendemeer normally has 4-10 grey nomad vehicles every night. You can go further west of Bendemeer on the river towards Kingstown if you want something quieter off the highway.Moonbi lookout as suggested half way up the Moonbi hills, or near the showground in the village of Moonbi at the horse sports yards. You can head west of Moonbi on Moonbi Gap road for a km or 3 to get somewhere quieter. Assuming you are then turning to Walcha there are numerous places around "Walcha Road" and Woolbrook which will be quieter.

IF you are not turning off to Walcha there is a large flat roadside stop area about 30km south of Uralla/20km north of Bendemeer just as you top the rise amongst the stringybarks, from memory could even have a toilet, that is signposted as a rest area

If you effectively just need a spot two vehicles wide, almost anywhere. You need to choose do I need to be within 200m of the highway hearing trucks all night or not. I prefer not so I'd be heading west of Bendemeer towards Kingstown, west of Moonbi on Moonbi Gap Rd if you are heading to Port turning off at the Woolbrook sign to find something quieter

About 5km. N of Glen Innes there are 2 rest areas alongside the Beardy Waters.
One has a loo, not sure about the other even though I live here!
Maintained by our local council, we actually have 4 free rest areas within 5 km. of town.
