Don't think permits are issued for the northern section, Tuck, as in north of Madigan's Camp 5.

If travelling from the Alice, it may pay to visit Central Land Council office, and inquire there. They may offer a reason why you can't travel south from the Alice, which may be cultural reasons. To travel without a permit, and get "sprung", might add to arguments for total closure of many of these desirable tracks.

Actually the aboriginal lands begin (when heading north) about 20 - 25 km south of camp 5 Bob.
It looks like from Alice you might be able to drive about 75km before you hit Inwemanthwererre lands.
Taken from HEMA 4WD maps showing indigenous zones.

Oh, and I think you're correct mate, I can't recall anyone ever getting permission to travel through there, but hey, worth asking.

tuck, maybe Binns Tk is an option, takes you down to the western side of the desert, and Old Andado is a highlight . . . if you haven't been that way before.

Not much else then I guess on the east side of the highway.
We did a nice run out through the West Macs a couple of years ago, loop out to turn down past Roma Gorge / Gosse Bluff, then after Hermannsburg down to Palm Valley, back and down Bogg Hole, out to Stuart via Henbury meteor site.

Have always wondered if you can drive through a it north and east via Hugh River to Old Ghan and down, but you might have done something like that before too, or looking for a more easterly option.

No tuck, haven't been out past the end of Mt Zeil range.
I just found a nice article I read about it a while back form Ron Moon trip through there . . .

It does look superb out that way.

As per article, looks like Haasts Bluff Traditional Owners the Central Lands Council in Alice Springs are the points of contact.

Have you tried before for a permit ?
This article was from only Feb '17, so it could be a good chance.

I read earlier this year that permits were being issued for the Colson, but since have seen several times that they aren't. The top starts next to Numery Station and heads south (obviously) interdunally. Some years ago now it was pretty overgrown.
