Hi all, we are looking to head to Cardwell towing our (6m) boat in July. The best route appears to be via the Barrier Highway, then up towards Barcaldine, then on to Townsville. Looking at the maps, the route from Barcaldine to Townsville is most direct via Aramac to Torrens Creek (east of Hughenden).

However this road currently shows some sections unsealed (due for completion this year- subject to conditions). The alternative appears to head west from Barcaldine to Winton, then on to Hughenden. This adds just over an hour, (not a big deal). Does this sound right?

Not wanting to go on unsealed roads in that region, had those experiences without towing.

Cheers,

Mark

I’d suggest it would take at least 2 hours extra to go through Winton & Hughenden, unless you tow very quickly.

There’s only 14 kms of gravel left between Barcaldine & Torrens Ck at the moment.

Yes, about 1.5 hours extra, I think. Not much but would rather not. Thanks for the info...

I,d go Barcaldine/Torrens. You must be keen to fish Cardwell area in July. The south easterlies make boating rather uncomfortable and the cold weather has seen the barra off the chew. Lucinda would be my choice to stay and launch a boat. Nice part of the world though. Enjoy and hope you bag a decent feed.

We are probably going out from the Hinchinbrook boat ramp and fishing around the sheltered areas, going around to the east of the island if weather permits. Possibly launching from Lucinda as well. We are in the area (including the Whitsundays and Keppel areas) for around two months so we'll see what the conditions are like day to day.

Cheers, for that.

No worries Mark. Keep a close eye on the tides. Low tide coming back into the ramp at Lucinda can be very shallow. Same as the channel between the island and the mainland. Your there for a while so after a couple of days you should sort them out. I know many head due east past Hinchinbrook Island into deeper water looking for fish. In my opinion, I,ve fished the area a few times, its like most of Qld waters....overfished and under regulated.Check out the many you-tube clips, they may help. Good luck.

Really appreciate the tips. The trip isn't just fishing (though that's a big draw!), we'll be doing walks, birdwatching and camping out on the boat. I've caught a few fish in the channel before (on fly), but have heard it is a bit of a struggle over the past few years.

Thanks for the heads up on the ramps.

Cheers,

There's a boat ramp at Fishers Creek as well. I've only ever used the one at Lucinda and that was decades ago before the crocs were back.

Thanks Warren, pretty close to the road and interesting entry. Wonder how I'd go getting the 5.8m boat launched there?

I would go closer to the coast and head up through St George to Emerald and then up to Charters Towers and then you are getting close.

It looks like that would probably add a couple of hours over the Barcaldine/Torrens Creek route, plus it has more altitude and curved road changes. Prefer straight roads when towing, where possible.

Thanks though.
