Hi folks. We’re in Sydney and planning a trip home to Sunshine Coast with our Landcruiser 200 towing 2.6t hybrid off road van.
We came down fast via the coast road and are looking for some alternative routes north for a change. Any suggestions welcome. Thx. Stu & Kate

What do you want to see, what do you want to do, how long do you want to allocate? If considering inland.....

Head up New England Highway and branch off at times. From Scone up to Barrington Tops. From Wallabadah out to Nundle and ChaffeyDam. From Armidale East to Wollomombi Falls, Point Lookout, perhaps down through Ebor & Nymboida to Grafton. From Glen Innes East to Gibraltar Washpool NP then Grafton or down convict built old Glen Innes-Grafton Rd to Dalmorton ( just check tunnel dimensions away our van height). From Tenterfield off to Bald Rock or Girraween NP.
Some suggestions.

There is only one direct alternative route….the New England hwy.
But as mentioned, there are plenty of places to see if you have the time.

Here are a couple of suggestions: New England Highway, Pacific Highway via the Hinterland. Both of these routes provide opportunities to break away from the coastal road and experience different landscapes and attractions along the way.

There's Buckets Way via Gloucester and Walcha. There's one steep bit to negotiate but quite a scenic drive.

Hi Stu,

You could try going West out of Sydney to Bathurst, Orange and from Orange you could take The Escort Way and then to the Newell Highway at Forbes. From there you continue North to Parkes. “The Dish” Radio Telescope just north of Parkes is worth a visit, heavily involved in the Moon Landings. There is also the working Gold mine around Peak Hill north of Parkes, then on to Dubbo. You could also go from Orange directly to Dubbo, but you would miss Forbes and Parkes.

Continue North along the Newell, to the Warrumbungle Ranges. You can take a side trip through the Warrumbungles to the Siding Springs observatory, and still end up in Coonabarabran.

From Coonabarabran you can either continue on the Newell, or take the Oxley Highway to Gunnedah. Then on to Tamworth, Country Music Capital of Australia, then on to the New England Highway to Armidale, then to Glenn Innes. You can fossick for Sapphires around Glenn Innes.

From Glenn Innes, you could travel back towards the coast to Grafton, or you could continue north on the New England Highway where you come to Deepwater. The Longhorn Bar & Grill offer cheap camping behind the pub, both powered and unpowered sites. They do a good steak at the pub.

From Deepwater continue north to Tenterfield, where you can again head to the coast on the Bruxner Highway through Casino, Lismore, Ballina etc.

If you choose to continue north from Tenterfield, you can either head to Toowoomba, then Caboolture or Ipswich and Brisbane.

Whatever you decide, take your time and enjoy the trip.

I agree what others have posted...you will be overwhelmed with the amount of places to camp and visit.

Hi Stu A
I agree with all of the above as realistic options. But if you are looking for something a bit different off the main highways but still a fairly direct route then consider the following:
Come out of Sydney at Windsor and take the Putty Road north to Singleton or shoot across to Denman at the top end then from Tamworth take the Fossickers Way north till you get onto the Cunningham Highway and head east to Brisbane.Putty Road is a bit windy and steep at both ends but not too bad at all.
You will find plenty of interesting town etc along the way.
Cheers
