We are planning a trip which includes a visit to the Diamantina National Park. We will be towing a 19ft off road caravan with our 200 Series. The question relates to vehicular access to Hunters Gorge? It is stated that it is accessible for small caravans but of course ours is a little bigger. If other have visited in the past I would appreciate any information regarding access to the Gorge.
Many thanks
Robert

Been there twice in a KimberleyKamper, both times in from Boulia out to Windorah. Never been in from the main route ex Winton. Last time was several years ago so can't comment on current conditions, back then the road south was the least favourable with a creek crossing.

From memory I'd seen vans that size there I'd have no hesitation with our 14ft hybrid van.
They used to get cattle road trains in, the last time they had recently had a delivery of fencing equipment which would have been on a single semi.
Biggest question I have got for you is do you have enough fuel as it's a long way from fuel providers, especially if yohdothd100km(?) loop drive. Do your calculations.

2008. We were towing a boat. Came in from the south east. No recollection of anything worth a picture.

Robert,
Have only been into the Hunters Gorge campsite a few times, despite living next door to the Park for over 20 years. As Peter’s images show, roads are usually in fair order.
The SE access to DL can be cut up badly if there’s been a lot of double decker activity from Davenport Downs.
The track into the campsite is easy enough, though I do recall a sharp gully when almost at the camp. A single long drop toilet being the only luxury.

Bob.

Fantastic to see you back Bob, I only replied expecting that you were still recovering.
You are THE expert in that part of the world. I knew the former ranger in charge.

So good to see that you are hopefully feeling a bit better and well on the way to a good recovery, hang in there mate and be prepared to give it plenty of time. Cheers Ian.

Thanks for the well wishes, Mark, Stephen & Ian!
Been out of hospital for over 3 weeks now, but are marooned in Cairns at present. Luckily we are staying with one of our children.
Recovery seems slow at times, but am eating well & trying to be a bit active through all this wet weather.
Thanks again,
Regards,
Bob.

I can't imagine there would be any great difficulty accessing Hunters Gorge with your van. Be aware of the need for good tyres though, a lot of sharp & abrasive quartz on the roads out there. We stopped in at Hunters gorge but chose not to stay as it was fairly exposed & quite hot & windy at the time making it unpleasant with the dust blowing around. Instead we went on to the Gum Hole campground which is far more sheltered & shaded, but my memory is that the sites were fairly small with relatively tight access. So possibly not the best for your van. (We were towing our Tvan).

Spent a night there too, while I made some "adjustments" to the boat trailer.
Plenty of room in this spot.

Seeing HUNTERS Gorge mentioned, I can't give any info, but around 20 years ago, the ECOLOGICAL people wanted to do a survey of Feral Cats in the AREA. They enlisted a platoon of our ARMY soldiers to divide up, half one side and half the other side. Asked to SHOOT every cat they saw, (no houses or house cats present). they walked three kilometers down river. In their spread out line each side they totalled well over 300 cats in those 3 kilometres. At Hunters Gorge you might see a few too! "Here KITTY KITTY!

Just a few corrections, Ross, if I may?

The centre of activity was on Davenport Downs, where the cats were decimating the nesting sites of the rare Letter Wing Kite. We were told by the manager of Davenport, the unit disposed of 450 cats, and used 4,500 rounds of ammunition!
One yarn involving an M60, is better left for the campfire.

G'day Bob Y
Thanks for the info of where it was done! I simply read an article by someone, maybe not a very accurate account, and it didn't specify the actual place. Didn't know about the Kites as being the reason for the engagement with the enemy! Very interesting and there should be more of it, honing skills is important!

I agree ....... there should be service medals for "cat kills".

Cheers

We visited a couple of years ago in a 17' van with no problems coming from 'Old Cork' and leaving via the southern route towards Windorah. .
