We are travelling through March to Kunnunurra, having a 100km per day timetable. This means we can do 200-300km days, giving us 2-3 days in places along the way (yes, it is a transit section of our travels, I realise this does not allow us to spend much time getting to know an area).

We are travelling through to Bourke, Charleville, Mt Isa, Katherine and Timber Creek. Apart from one multi-day stop at Winton (museum), probably revisiting Mataranka and a couple of days at Edith Falls we aren't sure where else to plan 2-3 days. Given our main interests are birdwatching, walking and fossicking (fishing, but the opportunities seems low here!), can anyone suggest places of specific interest we may not want to miss along the way?

We will revisit these areas later (we have already been to quite a few here and there), just passing through this time.

Cheers,
Mark

Diamantina Lakes will provide some inland aquatic bird opportunities, in via Windorah, out to Winton. Just check your fuel requirements.
But then again with the recent Thompson River flooding you'll probably get the same opportunities at Isisford/ Barcaldine Town Common and Longreach.

Forgot about the flooding, thanks for that. We can stay around Longreach for a few days, check out the local waters. We looked into Bowra Sanctuary (near Cunnamurra) but they are not open for visits. The Barcaldine/Longreach area may be a good alternative right now.

Mark

Opalton, about 120kms south of Winton is a quirky little place to visit, has a camp ground & the possibility of both fossicking & of seeingOpalton Grasswrens

Much appreciated Cuppa. We'd noticed a few sightings made near Winton last year, so were hoping for an opportunity to see it there. Call me stupid (with reason!) but I hadn't thought of Opalton as a place for fossicking! Will make it a must-see detour now.

Cheers,

Mark

Last time we went through Timber Creek I mentioned I was planning to do some fly fishing along the river, but told the woman in the park office I was aware to be wary of the crocs. Her reply: "oh don't worry about them, they're in a world of their own.... don't go in the water though"!

Mostly accurate (but a little odd).

Plan to stay at Timber Creek a couple days, extraordinary flora and mountain ranges and complete total change to Katherine.

Hi Derek - at risk of hijacking Silkwood's thread (hopefully not) & in the hope you (or anyone else) might be familiar with the Timber Creek/Victoria River area - we are expecting to be up that way later in the year & are hoping to find our way around a few 'back tracks'.

We have only ever 'passed through' the area & as you know it is pretty stunning scenery. Our hope is that we might find some camp spots away from the highway & spend a week or three in that area.

If you, or anyone has knowledge of the area that you would like to share I would love to hear from you.

We have previously been through the Judbarra (Gregory River) NP so I'm not asking about this, more about accessible spots along the Victoria River??

Hi Mark,

If you are in to fossicking, just north of Alice Springs on the Plenty Highway, (take a right turn off the Stuart Highway), is Gemtree. The caravan park offers fossicking tours into the Garnet and Zircon fields. You will need to allow at least 2 days, first day to arrive and set up your camp, second day out in the gem fields, and third day pack up and leave. The campground will supply all the gear necessary, and will even “grade” your gemstones into gem quality or just ornaments.
