On my recent trip to NT last year I got complacent about the open speed limit & drove through a remote village ( I never actually saw any houses) with the 100km /h sign , a tad too fast & Mr. Policeman was waiting around the corner for me. Imagine my surprise , but the fine was minimal & being in NT I didn't accrue any points against my licence. I was cranky, but relieved & very careful after that!

yea I heard that the speed fines are that cheap that the bank fee for cashing your cheque would be more... Good stuff!

Another email from NT..

Hi Bruce

Thank you for your enquiry.

Speed limits are open except when it says so, i.e, coming into towns and cities. The Stuart Hwy between the SA border and Darwin has no speed limits except where indicated so keep an eye out for speed limit signs. The sign that has a black circle with a line through it means there is no speed limit.

As far as I'm aware, as long as your not a road train or semi trailer sized vehicle, there's no speed limit either. might be best to check out www.nt.gov.au for more information on this.

Please be aware that quite often there are no fences lining the hwy and wandering stock/large wildlife are quite promenant, especially at night.

200km/hr is not recommended for this reason.

Kind regards
Mal MacDonald

Have spent some time cruising at 170kph+ in the NT, man I wish we had some realistic speed limits on some of our freeways in other states.......

Would reduce fatigue related crashes,[proven in many studies, and Italy has just gone to 130 and 150kph freeway/hwy limits after trials proved a 30% less fatality rate from fatigue with higher speed limits and the U.S noted a 34% reduction in road deaths in the states that went to 75 and 85mph compared to "experts" stating a 17% road toll increase, instead of when they had the original country wide 55mph]

but unfortunately, higher limits would also reduce bracks revenue......................

"but unfortunately, higher limits would also reduce bracks revenue.."

Gee Daz, that wouldnt be sarcasm would it?

Do you think that 75% of drivers around that you see daily on the road could handle going faster?? Some have issues with 60 in a 110 zone!

Every other country to lift its limits found it worked, I know Aus drivers are bad, but Im sure with some extra driver training most could lift thier game..... some may even learn the 3 mirrors arent for putting on make up in 3 d, and the right lane is for overtaking.... not sitting at 95 in a 100 while talking on the mobile.........

I dont even know why Vic cars come with rear vision mirrors actually......

with a 150kmh speed limit we'd soon weed out the bad drivers

Several years ago the then and now federal minister for transport asked the NT GOvernemnt of the day if the NT would introduce 110 maximum speed limits in line with the (then) new national speed limits. Before this time it was 130km/h on Stuart Highway in SA and that was changed to 110. The NT is still open speed limit in most places and except for Kakadu (see footnote).

The then NT CLP governement refused on the basis that the road fatalities in the NT were not a result of speed, and that the average driver travelled at 130km/h on the Stuart Highway.

Every day hundres of vehicles travel north and south at speeds well in excess of 100km/h and these vehicles are not featured in fatalaties in our statiscally higher than average road toll.

However, In the NT, four wheel drive vehicles in singe vehicle rollovers are far too commonly involved in fatalaties, and many of these vehicles are travelling at 100 or slower. The other over represented group are older vehicles.

So, just remember, that freedom brings responsibility.

Sean

Hi Guys,

Correct, we have NO speed limits outside designated speed limit zones. You do not accrue any demerit points on your licence either if you get a TINNY, (you only aquire a criminal history if you are convicted in court), the traffic infringement notices (tinnys) do NOT get released to insurance companies etc or other jurisdictions. Drive safely and have a few breaks, and we won't lose this valuable benefit of living up here....Nissans Rule
