Having just read James Woodford's "The Dog Fence" (highly recommended), I am thinking of visiting Lake Frome. Most people will probably approach it from the Flinders Ranges side but I'd have to come from NSW. Has anyone done that, and is there any accommodation within striking distance, perhaps on a station? What are the tracks like from Milparinka or the Packsaddle Roadhouse through the dog fence towards Lake Frome?

Road west of Milparinka extremely slippery, after any rain. Travelled through there last week and found the road negotiable while towing camper. Be prepared for the dips in the road as they can be quite deep and catch you unawares. We saw fellow travellers, at Tibooburra, driving a datsun navara having suffered a badly bent chassis while crossing on of those dips.

As far as I am aware the owner of Lake Fromme station will not let vehicles through his property.

Not sure of the route you are taking, but accomodation at Cameron corner, Bollards Lagoon basic donga or comfortable cottage talk to Gina 0880913873.
All the accomodation you could wish for at Arkaroola, Leigh Creek has a great little campground (free washing machines thats unusual!!) and a nice little township. I know of nothing closer.

Yes, I knew about those but I was wondering about a shortcut through one of the gates in the dogfence between NSW and SA further south. But the more I look at it, the more sensible the Cameron Corner - Strzelecki track - Arkaroola route appears...

I've been living in Broken Hill for two years now and talking to people every chance I get. I would love to get permission to travel west from Packsaddle into SA but it is not easy. Apparently the new owners of stations in that area have had some serious damage done to tracks both on these properties and on ones they previously owned elswhere and simply say no.

Possibly you could approach by travelling north form Cockburn through Mulyungarie station but once again I'm not sure you will get permission.

Remember, these people work hard for their living, especially during this ongoing drought. Please, respct their wishes in regard to use of the land they need to earn a living.

Thanks for that. Upsetting the local station owners is the last thing I'd do, which is why I asked the question: you never know when you (or another 4wdriver) need their help and goodwill. Looks like that route is is a no-go, and Cameron Corner to Arkaroola it will have to be!

I've been warned that the sun gets to you on that white salty stuff. Is it THAT bad?

Hi Mungo
I've been making enquiries over the past few weeks & talking to station managers and the police at Cockburn about getting up through Benagarie through the fence to Frome Downs for special purposes.
It appears they want the marked tracks [on the maps] to disappear except for the station homestead access tracks. You will not get permission from Frome Downs to cross their property.
There has been no maintainance on the track for a few years.

There's an area of the dog fence you can access up near Smithville House which is where the contractors work from but again you have to seek permission to let them know you are coming through so you don't run them down whilst their working, it's a narrow track.
