Hi Guys,
My Kia Sportage is just fabulous. I towed my 4.75m boat with it on the weekend and it put my old Commodore to shame. However, when I change gears, the uni / pinion and gear train from the gearbox makes very loud clunk/bang sound as the slack in the drive train is taken up in the drive to the diff. at the back. The service manager told me this is completely normal and that the drive train was one of the quietest he has ever heard. I concider this sound/noise to be very excessive and should be checked over. What is your opinion of the comments from the manager? Should I press for a re-evaluation of the situation? This is the only "problem" I have with the vechile, I am thrilled to bits with its performance and every thing else with it. What do you think of the sounds from the drive train?
Thanks for your replies,
Wedge

thats not a very subtle comment about his choice of vehicle John, Correct me if Im wrong but it sounds like "you bought a Kia, get over it?"
Wedge, I think youll find there is a 1800 number for Kia customer service or at least a direct number. Try that and see if you get any joy.
I remember when "Made in Japan" was taken to mean cheap junk, and it wasnt that long ago (20 years?)

Fish I actually think your comment is applicable to the service manager from KIA.
He's saying what do you expect you paid nothing for the vehicle and you expect me to do something about it. Get over it, it's fine I can't be bothered with you go away.

Wedge,
I'd be going for a second opinion. Whether it's "normal" or not, it shouldn't do it. If it's an inherent engineering fault they need to do something about it.
Is it new and/or still under warranty?
Garyinoz knows these very
well and should give you some valuable feedback soon.
Cheers,
Jim.

Wedge,
They all have driveline noise to varying degrees depending on age and use.
Your service manager has probably tried to make a warranty claim on another
customer's car and got nowhere with Kia.
He probably means its the quietest Sportage he has driven.
He probably would like to help but Kia don't want to start down the track of having to pay for diff rebuilds on every 2nd Sportage.
On the positive side I have not seen a Sportage diff fail despite all the noises.

Kia certainly didnt seem to shirk on the early carnival engine problems with internal coolant leakage. Put in a new engine. full stop

I remember the ACA (so maybe it's all crap) stories about the Kia Carnival having all sorts of trouble. They were doing the segements because Kia was trying to have nothing to do with it.
Perhaps they had changed their tune because of all the bad publicity?

The driveline does in fact have a good deal of slop in it, the gearbox especially so. This is attributable to the box being overdesigned by Getrag (taken from much larger vehicle). The same box internals are used in several commercial vehicles in Europe with no significant intrinsic weak spots, just noisy and sloppy.
A lot of the banging is in fact the rear
suspension rubbers, which are too soft, allowing the differential to rotate with the applicarion of torque.

Thanks GaryInOz, I will check it more. Your comments do fit my line of thought. I am very pleased with the vehicle, it pulls my boat up hills where my commodore would never go. Incidently, the comodore was in excellent condition. It was a shame to lose it, written off in an accident. The upkeep on the commodore was too much, we live in the bush (on the edge of the Coral Sea) and demand a lot from our car. The Kia is the best 4x4 I have owned or driven. Thanks again,
Wedge
