I'm surprised they are allowed to be sold.

It's illegal (at least in S.A.) to have any detection device in your posession.
Very heavy fine I believe.

The way they get away with it is that it's not a detection device.

The way it works is that it has preloaded locations of fixed cameras. When you approach that location, it gives an alert. Periodic updates are required to keep the camera location database current.

It won't alert on portable speed cameras, or moving radar units.

This does not detect cameras, it only tells you where the fixed ones are.

Garmin released something similar to the UHF GPS in the states a few years ago, called the RINO.

I emailed Garmin and aksed if there were any plans to sell in Australia, I got a comprehensive reply stating that the Australian Communication laws prevented the transmission of data and voice on the same public channel and that therefore they could not be sold in Australia, I wonder how Uniden has gotten around this???

From the manual (in the back near the channel list):

Channels 05 and 35 are Emergency Channels and Channel 11 is a Calling
Channel. Channels 22 and 23 are used for telemetry and telecommand
applications, voice communications are not permitted on these channels.

So it would use Channels 22 and 23 to transfer location info to other units.

You can download a .wpt file of all known fixed speed camera locations and use it with OziExplorer either on a PDA or computer.

That's exactly what I do.

However the list is not entirely accurate nor is it complete. Whenever I find new ones I add them and mail the person who maintains it.

Also, using a PDA in the car is not all that convenient sometimes.

The Uniden product is both well priced and looks easy to put away in the car.
Certainly it is cheaper than a PDA which can be well over $1000 by the time you add GPS, maps, OziExplorer car charger, mount etc.

Thats right Chris, unless you already have the setup, then the extra cost of the UHF is a bit. I am looking at upgrading from my 0.5w Uniden to a 5 wat job and it looks like the Icom is a winner. Anyways, thats what the forums all about finding stuff out.

while not meaning to sound "holier than thou" I reckon they should be illegal and anyone caught using them fined heavily. As one who drives emergency vehicles for a job and never had a speeding fine in 42 years of driving I consider speeding fines are not heavy enough.

It doesn't matter how high the fines are some people will still speed.

Along with kicking people who speed how about offering incentives for not speeding. For each month offense free one get a 100 smacker cheque in the mail.

Oh dear - another brainwashed one....

Speed doesn't kill - bad driving kills.

Train people to drive properly and road accident numbers will
fall - bleep around with silly slogans and they won't.

Trouble is training people costs money and takes effort from
everyone - mush easier to pretend it's all about speed.

Now... before you all get too pious with me - please tell me
where I can find a skid pan in Victoria to refresh my own
skid control and teach my son. Last time I looked about 3
years ago I could not find a publicly available one.

Driver training _and_ ongoing practice anyone? It’s a
joke in Australia.

Mike, whilst I agree that it is poor driving skills rather than speed that kill, what Mad Dog is pointing out is about people speeding, I once said you're never speeding unless you get caught. Speed campaigns are all about risk management and reducing the risk to something that the public will accept. I do not believe that the public would accept a zero road toll as this would come with very very low speed limits, driving in totally enclosed road systems, speedo's which only read to 10 km/h etc etc etc

If you're looking for a skid pan goto Shepparton to the Driver training complex there. They make their skid pan available (for a fee) to the public. Or did so when I was up there 18 months ago. Mind you, for the fee, I would pay for the advanced driving course and get the whole thing for a day. Its an amazing learning (and fun) experience, and its done in someone elses vehicle.

Mike,
Just for my info what do you do for a job? Do you drive for a living and if so what as? Seems to me all you are looking for is an excuse or someone to blame when it hits the fan the same as millions of other drivers.Speed sure asbleepdoes kill and we see it every day of the year in our line of work. A bad driver running off the road at the legal speed probably will survive but at speed it will be curtains for them. Why not fine the speeders off the road and maybe we will save a few from their own stupidity and I can rest a bit easier after 30 yrs of scraping them up.

hahahahaha a bad driver running off the road at the legal speed will survive, so will a good driver running off the road at 150kmh as long as THEY DONT HIT ANYTHING or roll over. Hit a tree head on at 100kmh and walk away? I find that hard to believe.

What about TWO bad drivers at 80 kmh each (20 under the limit) one drifts into the other contact speed 160kmh, = 2 fatalaties.

Its poor driving theat is the biggest risk not speed.

The Uniden unit can not be made illegal like a radar detector (which is still legal in WA). It is a GPS with features that warn you of an upcoming co-ordinate that is in a databse with an description/ attribute, such as Muta-Nova etc. This is no different to the commercial radio stations warning you of a radar on a certain road. You could even setup up a standard GPS with the co-ords yourself if the database was freely available.

We all know the issues about speed, what actually kills and why. However, what some "perfect" people don't understand is that no one is safe behind the wheel, whether they are the cause or the victim. What is universally accepted is the greater the risk you take, whether it be "speeding", drink driving or just plain stupid negligence, the more likely you're going to be either the cause or the victim.

There is also the issue of road condition or an error in judgment often seen as an accident that have a large percentage for these fatalities and injuries to occur. This is where the main roads department should be held more liabel/accountable than they are.

Dare I say, though, that my biggest issue is the placement of these speed detecting devices which are often in low statistical areas for accidents, thus are pure revenue makers. Arrogant/ignorant coppers don't help the cause either but, hell if I ever get called to a accident where there was a death I'd be less than polite to some idiot who cannot help but drink drive, play chicken, extremely high speed or not taking care in wet weather.

I have lost countless dollars from speeding but I am sure to continue filling the coffers for the pay increase for our beloved parliamentarians or buying perfume or slippers on credit card and claiming it as a legit expense (Town of Vincent, WA) till the day I don't pass my eye exam. More fool me but I accept that but not foolish enough to accept all the bull from road safety. Place the Mutla-Novas in high accident areas and mobile cops then I would be more convinced they are being sincere in their concerns.

have a safe journey ;)
