Hi all .
Myself and a mate towed our Trak Shaks into the Bendethera Valley from the east last Saturday . He was towing his with a Prado and I was towing mine with a 100 TD .
What a beautiful place . The bird life was the best I have ever seen anywhere in Australia . We were constantly entertained by a circus of monitors who climbed , fought and made love in a seemingly constant display . At one time my mate complained he was having trouble reading his book as there was too much happening around our camp .
We twice had wombats within 20 feet of us , and they seemed unconcerned by our presence . The numbers of wallabies and roos down there was mind boggling .
By Tuesday we were the only campers in the valley so it was very peaceful .
I think that the rabbit plague there has missed out on the calcivirus plague - I have not seen rabbit numbers like that for a few years .
I saw the damage allegedly caused by the 4WD club and it was pretty bad .I am glad that Ozexplorer is more aligned with touring than with that type of macco 4WD enthusiast .
We decided to travel out of the valley by the western track . This was a challenge
towing the campers and my mate's Prado could not get up the hills because he had the tyres which came on the car and the blacktop treads just left the car wheel spinning on the steep rock track . My Cooper A/Ts did a perfect job of hanging on and my diff locks helped too . I had to tow his camper out and then come back and tow mine out . There was a very tight switchback on this firetrail that was quite difficult to negotiate with the campers on . It was a bit scary doing a three point turn with the camper on the back and a huge drop off and loose edges - especially if your scared of heights !
It was very steep on this track and much more difficult than the way in from the east .We certainly could not have got out with the campers , on either of the racks,if it had rained , but we had plenty of time and could have waited if that had happened
We travelled south through the Badja area and then headed down the Wadbilliga FT to Cobargo and Bermagui .The Wadbilliga FT was picturesque but the camping area at the bottom was a real bummer - what a dump .
We played golf at Bermagui the next day and then headed off to the Mimosa NP. This looks like the jewel in the NP crown as they have spared no expense in creating a beautiful camping area with great facilities . It must be very difficult to get a camp site here during the school holidays and weekends , but we had no problem midweek . The beach right at the Mimosa Rocks was pretty poor - I think it is a bit flat and featureless for the fish , but great for swimming .
Friday morning it rained heavilly , so we decided to go home to Sydney . Now I am about to attempt to put my camper up in the driveway so that I can dry out the canvass .
Cheers ,
Willie .

Hi Willie,
Yes Bendethera is top of my list too. Was there 2 weeks ago midweek. So peaceful and wildlife a plenty. I was picturing you guys manouvering that tight hairpin heading out. I am glad your friend didnt get himself into trouble.
May organise a trip down there again some time if your free, I know a few in here that will definately tag alone.
Cheers Angelo

OK Cokeaddict ,
It would be good to meet some members , so we will organise this .
Are you in one of those cars coming onto the straight at Oran Park . I loved that corner - I built a turbo BMW 2.7 litre with 300 KW which used to blast out of that corner like a missile .
Cheers ,
Willie .

Hi Mate,
Yes thats my Commodore in the pic. I would usually take that corner wide as i used to enjoy sliding the rear end out under power and nicking the wall lap after lap. but as you can see from that pic..the bugger in the falcon wanted to try and sneak inside me so i missed the wall on that lap....Bastard !!!. took my fun away he did.
I enjoyed a tight race. You got pics of the BMW? May have seen it at some stage. Love Oran Park.

How were the hairpin turns to negociate with the campers we came in and went out from Moruya as we were told you couldn't come in ir out that way with a camper you mentioned you went out to the west. The rabbits are a bugger but still a great place.

Baz ,

Quite frankly , if I had known what the track was going to be like , I would not have attempted it with the campers . The scenery was no better than the track from the east and the west track ( after you had dragged yourself out of the valley and gone past the trig station ) was very rough and many sections had to be taken at an absolute crawl in low range .

Including twice unhooking my mates Trak Shak and hauling it up with my car etc , we took three and a half hours to get out to a better dirt road . It took us twenty minutes to travel in on the eastern track .

But it was a "Boys Own" adventure and the three point turn with the camper will make a good campfire tale .

Cheers ,

Willie .

Thanks Willie good too know i don't think i'll try it with the camper mainly cause SWMBO didn't like coming in via Moruya so no chance coming in that way. I noticed you mentioned Oran Pk you used to race by the sounds of it that corner Yamaha i've inspected the surface there a couple of times not my favorite corner.

Click on my rig pic go down to other pix i'm 78.

Baz ,
The corner onto the straight at Oran Park was my favourite . You could blast over the hill and then go from full foot down acceleration to stand on the brakes , stay out wide to get the apex , feather it though the corner and blast out of it down the straight . I have a big smile on my face now just thinking about it .
I see you on #78 - your a braver man than I Baz . I needed four walls for protection - not just a bit of leather .
Cheers ,
Willie .

Just sounds like good 4WDriving to me.....after all we don't have these rigs to drive on smooth surfaces all the time do we?

Here is a link to two pics of the hairpin for those who haven't been that way, one from above and on from the corner of the hairpin. Photos don't do it justice!!

Hope this works

Steve ,
I should have taken a photo when I was trying to get around but I was a tad tense at the time and did not think of it .
The track was fairly rugged after the trig station at the top , but not scary like the switchback . It would all have been a breeze without the campers , but I like my home comforts !

Nah not yet, and with the cost of the formal for the oldest doesn't look like I'll get anything off my wish list from Santa!!! Maybe the Easter bunny will be extra nice????

Ever hopeful

Hey Willie,

I know the photos flatten things out and make them look easier than they really are. How much did you have to back to get around there with the Trak Shak on.

Bendethra is a place I was always going to visit while I lived in Sydney. We had friends who regularly went there and always said it was great. Now we are in Broken Hill and don't get too many chances to see the south coast of NSW. We will be staying in Kiama in Jan and I was wondering about coming home through that area. I will have a Trak Shak hanging off the towbar and the missus hates hanging off a cliff.

THanks Steve for putting the photos up. It does help us to understand what is being talked about.

Hi Duncs ,

I really only was game to reverse about two feet , then go forward two feet , then back back two feet and then drag the camper ( which was now at a right angle to the car ) off up the track .

Sounds OK now but the edge was close and it was very soft , loose rock .

The track in from the east ( Moruya ) is so easy , it is not worth even contemplating the west track with a camper , unless you are a man who really likes a challenge .

I don't reckon I could get my camper out if it rained - even on the easier east track - and that's with front and rear diff locks . The dozer has left so muck loose rock and soil that when it got wet I think it would be as slippery as .....

Hope you have a good time in January . There will be a lot of people down there then , but there is literally thousands of acres of mown ( by rabbits and roos ) green grass to camp on , and a lovelly little river flowing throgh to swim in .

Cheers ,

Willie .

The road looks in fantastic shape, much better than it was 15 years ago, You wouldn,t even think about towing into bendethera back then. since NP's have upgraded the tracks about 8-10 years ago and made it possible.
I used to take 8 hours to get to braidwood going west out of bendethera, 5 hours to the trig. 1 hour from the east.
its a little easier now!

Beenabout ,
The road to the trig is still a bitch . The road down into the valley is in brilliant shape after very recent work with a dozer . The only problem for some , is the steepness and the single switchback , but the surface is as smooth as a babys bum .

Geez , your keen taking on that hairpin towing a CT.

I recon you could take it coming in , but going , out . . . I would find another way (Moruya).

Would even think about that track in the rain. Out via Moruya in heavy rain is possible.
