Wew're planning atrip across the
Nullarbor Plain early next year. Heard it can be long and boring, but there must be something of interest out there. Any advice on things to see and do across the Nullarbor.

Saw on one of the early morning shows, that an entrepreneur is building an 18 hole golf course - - with a hole every couple of hundred kms - bit of history at each one, and the hole designed to 'show off' historical or natural features - might not be there by early next year, but sounds interesting all the same..

Did the trip in the month of September. We found it fabulous and not a bit boring. In spring you will be amazed at the wild flowers and some of the
views are just fantastic. You may even site whales.
Be prepared to to some side trips and just enjoy.
If you have a vehicle that can handle a bit of soft sand, drive out to the Eyre Telegraph station and have a cuppa with the care takers.
Nul arbor - no trees, but I think it has its own special beauty.
My only refret is that I by passed
Perth (been their lots of times on business) and headed north.
Now I want to to do the cross again and go down to Esperancce.
If you want to go and not drive you can put the car on the Indian Pacific, but for big 4bys,
Adelaide is as far as you can go. I think it has something to do with bridge or tunnel clearance in the eastern states.

Its boring if you are in a hurry to get one way or the other. take your time as there is plenty to see and do, depending on the heat and your preparation. I am no expert but we had a great time taking a 5 days
Adelaide to
Perth in Sep/Oct. Even that was a too short in my opinion, but most people blast thru in a couple of days like we did on the way home and its a long drag when your not stopping.
Cheers

Hi Smudger,
There is plenty to see and do across the Nullabor. In fact you will enjoy the trip if you take it easy and spend some time taking in the sights.
For a brief look at what to see on the SA side, have a look at
http://www.wilmap.com.au/nullarbor.html.Eucla Telegraph Station is worth a visit.
I can recommend
camping at Cocklbiddy
Cave (If you can find the track in there) and near by you can head for the
Eyre Bird Observatory. Even going to the
lookout is worth the detour and does not require any offroad capabilities.
Another stop I always enjoy is
Caiguna Blowhole. Standing in
the pool of cool air on a 40 degree day is a unexpectedly pleasant experience.
If you're heading for Esperence, consider taking the Baladonia road but check the conditions first.
The only people I know who hate crossing the Nullabor are the ones who insist on getting it behind them as quickly as possible.
Hope this helps.

Have done it & agree with the above. Much to see especially in
Ceduna area.
Be careful of the food in some roadhouses as I have heard of cases of food poisoning spoiling trips but perhaps you judge them by the truckies stops.
One I went into at eastern end was rather bare & austere & upon asking if they had :
a pie or pastie for lunch was greeted with the comment:
"Yep but theyre all frozen"& no offer to get one out & heat it!
Few days later along the road an amused traveller told me exactly the same story!
Also fuel at the eastern end was much cheaper than further along as it seems one man owns most of the other servos---GREEDY

Hi Smudger ,
I am one of those lulus who did it fast and found it as boring as .....
I went
Sydney to
Meekatharra in 4 days , but still had time to stop at a few of the clifftop vantage points and check out the whales - fantastic
views .
Cheers ,
Willie .

Done the trip once - there and back - not at all boring and doesn't take long anyway. In a day you will pass through several different types of country, vegetation etc. Looking forward to next trip across - soon, i hope.

One huge tip Smudger that I never saw before I left - the cheapest fuel on the Nullabor [petrol and diesel] is at
Mundrabilla and when I say cheaper 1.19 litre for diesel compared to 1.52 at Madura and 1.44 at
Eucla. Its a garage owned by SAFF but it is between
Eucla and Madua in WA. Didn't ask how they were so much cheaper, just squeezed in every last drop I could get and then a cup more.
Plenty to do if you've got the time. Whitest beaches in Aus are accessable,
blowholes,
Eucla.
Its just not exciting for kids 5-20 yo I guess. I've done it about 15 times each way over 25 years and the last was the most enjoyable,
Mind you I used to be driving it at night tucked in behind trucks so I missed the roos. I was younger and more stupid then and never noticed how close the Bight was. I had never seen the sea was so close until the last one. Cliffs are unbelievable and all in all a good drive, just long.

Australian Geo did a great map of the Nullarbor in either late 96 or early 97. I think they alos do a book on hte Nullarbor.
If you go into one of their shops and ask I am sure they will be able to help you.
