Hi all,
I'm a new member (or should I say a newly rejoined member).
I'm planning to do the Savannah Way after the wet in 2005 (maybe May-June). The Savannah Way is the newly named run from Cairns to Broome via Katherine which the Qld/Nth Territory/WA Govts and Feds have put together and are spending a bit of money on. The link is savannahway.com.au and it's had a fair bit of publicity over the last few months since it was formalised. There are plenty of other links to it via Google.
I've done a bit of a search on this site and through Forum and although I can find links to various sections of the run, there's no reference to it in its new guise as the Savannah Way.
Has anyone done the run in its entirety, either since its formalised naming or before?
It sounds like a fantastic trip and I'm looking forward to pointing the Frontera at it.
Any info/experiences etc would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Dear Paul,

While we haven't done the Savannah Way in its entirety, in October this year we did the the part from Cairns ending up by turning off to head to Kinfisher Camp on the Nicholson River. We also had a couple of detours - one in particular to Chillagoe and the caves. Well worth the visit.

Spent and interesting? night at the Mount Garnet Caravan Park and then travelled to Undarra Lava Tubes which were great, especially the night tour where we saw many small snakes which were catching the microbats as they emerged at night in their thousands to feed. The sunset from the top of a jumpup was to be believed. The guide took champagne and eats and we watched the sun go down behind a fantastic electrical storm far in the distance.

Headed off thru' Einasleigh were we walked to the gorge and had a drink at the pub. Great railway bridge here! Then up thru' Georgetown to Cobbold Gorge - what a great place to camp. The people here were very friendly (and there was a fantastic bar as well!) The trip along Cobbold Gorge was fascinating. Good swimming here as well.

From Cobbold Gorge to Karumba - also a great place for the sunsets at the Sunset Bar in the pub and some great fishing. From Karumba, out thru' Burketown we turned off to go to Kingfisher Camp on Bowthorn Station, another great spot to camp and lovely people. From here we took the road thru' the Station via the homestead where we had morning tea and on to Lawn Hill National Park. Now I know this isn't on the Savannah way but don't go past without a detour - warm spring fed swimming, waterlillies, canoeing and relaxing. Just great.

We towed a Coromal Dirt Road caravan all the way with absolutely no difficulty and loved this trip so much I could do it all again. Just make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to do some detours.

Regards,
Lynn

Lynn,

You painted abeautiful picture of your trip. My wife and I travelled the Matilda Highway from Brisbane to Kurumba returning via Cobbald Gorge, Undara Caves, Townsville, Charters Towers, Caranavan Gorge and unfortunatly back home.

The whole trip was magnificent from start to finnish with not enough time to realy stay in one place too long. The next trip, and the Savannah Way looks the goods we will definately do the side trips to Kingfisher Camp on Bowthorn Station and onto Lawn Hill.

I jave emailed Rob for a copy of his itinerary for guidence.

Loved your trip feedback.

Best wishes,

Patrick

Hey, many thanks for your response. Great stuff.

You've really whetted my appetite now.

We did the Cape in August/September 2003 and saw some of the more easterly spots you mention but didn't get further west than Undarra.

Again, sincere thanks.

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul,
In October 2004 I was chartered for 30 days to take a Swiss lady from Cairns to Broome and back again via the Savanah Way. We also did Lawn Hill, Darwin, Kakadu, Lichfield, Bungle Bungles and the Gibb River Rd. I have a full itinary of this tour including distances and fuel costs. email me if you are interested. It was a sensational trip. 4wdtraining@cairns.com.au

Hi Paul,

Its an easy trip. We joined the Savanah way after coming south from the Cape via Hahn rodhouse turned right and headed south through the stations. Came further down via Burketown, Lawn Hill etc and ended up on the Savanah way sometime after the Burketown developmental road. There is some beautiful country along the way. Bush camp as often as you can, it is an easy trip in a well set up vehicle. We did it in a 100 Series TD with All terrain bridgestones towing a Jumbuck Camper. We turned left at tennant creek down to the rock and then came home to WA via the great central road.

Have a great trip.

Pete
