Hi,
I am taking the wife and family (3 kids - 16, 13 & 9) away for a holiday and we have decided to explore around Broken Hill for about a week.

We are travelling from Melbourne via Mildura. After the week in Broken Hill (and surrounds), we are going to Sydney via White Cliffs to see some family and then home.

What are the must see & do things around Broken Hill that shouldn't be missed ?

Also, we are camping (tent camper trailer), but prefer for this trip to use caravan parks. Any recommendations of the camper trailer friendly caravan parks in Broken Hill would be appreciated ?

Cheers,
Malcolm

A day trip out to Silverton is worthwhile.
Visit the Pub and they will demonstrate to you a neat little fundraising trick.
Good atmosphere with a bit of history.

Hi Malcolm

I'd go to the Line of Load which is really interesting and one of the mine tours there.

not sure the kids would be interested in art galleries, but there are heaps in Broken Hill,

Silverton is a great place to visit and walk around, check out the mad max interceptor car

The living desert sculptures is interesting too.

there's a great tourist info centre there with lots of suggestioins of things to do.

We've stayed in both caravan parks, they're both good, the Broken Hill city [topu tourist] one though is on flatter ground and might be easier to find level ground, but I can't fault the people at the Lake View caravan park [family parks of australia]...

I'm sure you'll find heaps to do.

cheers

Lyn

Try Lake view CP at Broken Hill, Mutawija NP on way to White Cliffs, the CP at WC is also good value. Visit Day Dream mine on way to/from Silverton. Plenty to see in BH so visit the info centre for directions. Allow a complete day in WC to see sights.
Have a great holiday and tread lightly.
Regards, Peter.

When we were there, we went to the Peter Browne gallery near Silverton and watched him paint a picture from start to finish ( took less than half an hour) which my brother in law promptly bought for about $400. Was great to see and he also entertained us us with some hillarious stories.

Mal,

I've been living in the Hill for just over 3 years now and still have not seen everything.

I would recommend a look around Menindee, you could come from Mildura via Pooncarie and Menindee. It would be a big day but it is worth a look. You couold spend a night camped by the river, upstream of Menindee is bush camping or down stream in the National Park, to break it up if you like. Kinchega Woolshed is well worth a look. Copi Hollow is where the locals go for a swim and water ski. Lake Menindee is worth a look at the moment as it is dry. The lookout is on the left, heading to Broken HIll, just north of the Copi turn before you go over the bridge. You could also visit all this on a day trip from Broken Hill.

You should see a couple of galleries at least. Jack Absalom is nice as is Roxanne Minchin and the Silver City Mint opposite the Entertainment Centre in Chloride St. Pro Hart is also interesting but there is a $4.00 charge for adults. The FLying Doctor Base also have a visitor centre and a bit of a museum showing a video about the history of the service.

The things others have suggested above are all good. At Silverton you should also see the Coin Carvery and take some time to do at least part of the walk tour, you should get info about this at the pub. Take the kids into hte pub to look at the photos on the walls and the various signs used in movies are hanging in the beer garden.

Mutawintgee NP is worth a look, you can camp there but should pre book (I think). You could go through the park on the way to White Cliffs. Consider staying underground at White Cliffs, the kids will love it and you will sleep very well, no light and no noise.

Broken Hill Visitor Information Centre phone is 1800 630 008. or www.visitbroken hill.com.au

Hope you enjoy our town

The Delpratt mine tour is great - can be a bit pricey because they have been hit with public liability - in my view a great experience - safe, yet impressive for the kids as well as adults. I like the natural environment - the local landscapes - see the rock sculptures on top of the hill at sunset (just out of town) - nice drive out to the reservoirs too (they have 2) - there are some great views out by the western reservoir (forget the name) - you can damn near see the Flinders ranges from there. Of the 2 caravan parks, the big one on the Adelaide Road (by the cemetery) is the go - very good standard overall .

Umberumberka is the name you are looking for. Great views out over the Mundi Mundi Plain. It's about 10km beyond Silverton. Half way there you come over a rise and there is a lookout on the right. It was used in the making of Mad Max 2 and is a great place to wee the sunset. Can't quite see the Flinders but it feels like you can.

G'Day Malcolm,

We were in Broken Hill last month, for us one of the highlights, (other than those listed), was School of the Air.

You have to book at the info centre in town the day before but it only cost $4.40 and you get to see the school and sit in during a class. Lasts for about 90 minutes in total but very interesting. Would be great for the kids to see how this works

Hope this helps

Try the old Daydream Mine tour at a place near Silverton. its well sign posted. Lots of history from 120 years ago. You get fitted out with helmets and lamps and climb down into the hole in the ground. Its cheaper than the town mine tours and will create a lasting impression on the family.

Do a town walk with one of the old miners as a guide. They have some fabulous stories to tell and you get some great insights into the town. Bookings at the info centre where they start and finish. Wife and I did this last year and am really wanting to go back. We stayed at the caravan park in town nice flat sites and good amenities.

I am sure you will enjoy the area
