Hi all
we have a trip to Fraser coming up and as I dont like to get caught out and not be prepared I was looking for a site that can estimate distance travelled in time and KLMs so we can plan the trip with some sort of accuracy IE. we are leaving SYD from Penrith and would like to get to the gold coast that day but Im not sure as in distance any help on this would be appreciated.

Regards JB.

JB,

If you are an NRMA member they have a website with that info I think.
If you have a couple of drivers Penrith - G Coast is doable in a day, is about 800/850km. First 4-5hrs is mostly dual carriageway, almost to Pt Macquarie with the exception of a few stretches. Careful around Nabiac roadworks, boys in blue been working this stretch pretty hard. UHF ch 29 on this highway if you have one.
Is still a fair run to Fraser ferry from the G Coast (4 1/2 hrs with a stop).
Better to allow an extra day and get there rather than push it and get only 3/4 the way.
Safe travels and happy holidays.
Trevor.

We are doing the trip form Sydney to Fraser in 3 weeks. As a pretty accurate rule of thumb if you sit on the speed limits and stop every 2 hours for a rest/driver change soemthing to eat etc you will over the day average 80 KMH. So we have planned Sydney to Fraser as a 15 hour trip. If solo the stops can be a bit shorter the 80KMH figure is 2 adults and 2 kids.

Sorry that this is not much to do with the post but a few weeks ago i was chatting to friend who had just returned from Frazier and asked how the dingo's are now, he said that after a few days of them hanging around they decided to find easier pickings plus he said " i think it had something to do with my 4 kids giving them the odd smack on the butt with thier slingshots useing small rubber balls " hmmm maybe the animal lib poeple would be a bit upset but after a couple of days the kids only had to do the actions of the slingshot and the mutts would take off.

govo, you've cracked me up!! Poor bloody dingo's they wouldn't know what had em. (Not that I'm encouraging the clacker pinging of our native wildlife)
Does it work just as well with backpackers on Fraser? Now that's something I can encourage!!

oh yeah.... great idea..... till someone's kid "clacker ping's" the wrong one and gets attacked.... then it'll be the dingo's fault! (That's 'cos most people have forgotten how to take responsibility for their own actions!!)

The rangers will (and do) tell you the correct strategy of dealing with them, listen to them, they are the people who know best! We listen to them, and follow their advice and haven't had a problem with the wildlife at all over there!

Never known a mutt that would attack after being stung by a slingshot...and as for the rangers, we always camp at Cathedal Beach so they don't annoy us..one year we camped at Dundaba and every morning they would come around finding small faults with everybodys camp, got to be very annoying and spoilt the holiday...one time my wife caught a dingo trying to get into the fridgefreezer so she wacked it with a broom, it gave a yelp and a ranger that was close by threatened to fine her....he soon left after she threatened to hit him with the broom instead.
I know that the rangers do a good job over there but sometimes they can be a bit over the top with thier authority.

Smile Brian, maybe I'd thought of "the wrong one and gets attacked.... then it'll be the dingo's fault" and was having a little bit of fun.

I'm with Govo on the Rangers and the dingoes. The dingoes have been encouraged for too long and have lost any fear of humans - perhaps it's time to put some back. I've seen small kids chased up the beach by a dingo, and it was lucky we were close by. Slingshots sound like an excellent solution - don't do much harm to the animals and makes them keep their distance. I also don't think the dingo would attack, but if it did - very temporary dingo..... In the old days one might have knocked a couple over with a shotgun - not supposed to do that anymore...... :-) The rangers are helpful, but they can also be officious pains in the you know what. Really though, we've been up there half a dozen times, and had very few problems with the dingoes. We ignore them and they usually keep their distance. The march flies are much more of a problem!!

to Geoff M (Newcastle)
I'm smilin' mate.... it wasn't your post I was referring to.

It was the others.

Because the Rangers live there and do their job there, but others "know" better.
I agree that the dingoes mostly leave people alone if left to themselves, but, to quote Russell S "we've been up there half a dozen times" and then claim to know more on the subject than the Rangers do..... and why are the Rangers a pain???? have a look at what they have to put up with on a daily basis..... no wonder they get on people's cases..... I have drank coffee with rangers, my sons have played chess with them, I have never had a drama with them...

I'm not jumpin' on my soapbox with this, merely pointing out a few things that I personally think are worth mentioning. The 6 times that WE have been to Fraser we have listened to the rangers, followed the instructions in the info pack, and have NEVER, repeat NEVER had to deal with dingoes except from looking at them from a distance. It works for us...... if you want to "clacker ping" ... go your hardest.... just when one turns and bites you or someone else, or worse, someone elses kid, take responsibility for your actions.
I would and so would my family.

Just my opinion!
;-)

Hello Brian,
I suspect you and I are on the same planet and may very much have a lot of fun around a camp fire.

Enjoy your travels,
Geoff.

Hi JB

I've done that trip a number of times this year (Wollongong - Sunshine Coast). If you just want some hassle free driving, point A to Point B driving with no frills I would go up over the Putty and then up the New England through Tamworth. This will take you less time than going up the coast. On the outskirts of Brisbane there is a motor way that will take you to the Gold Coast. 15 hours with breaks is a good estimation. In my 5 trips it has taken between 15-17 hours but that was south of you to the Sunshine Coast - 1 driver very little stopping.

JB,
just got back from our annual fishing trip to Fraser Island and I live on the the Gold Coast. We camp at Ngkala Rock or Browns Rocks, travelling the speed limit and stopping at Matilda Petrol Station just outside of Gympie for fuel and coffee, we always allow 10hrs to camp site. This does sound like a long time but trust me, left Gold Coast 12:00am and arrived at Browns Rocks at 9:00am, and that with booking camping and vehicle permits online. this year we had good wide and flat beachs so the trip up the Island was a breese. From the barge to Eurong about 35mins, Eurong to Indian Head 1hr, Indian Head to Browns Rocks 1hr 30min. have a great trip its a fantastic place.

Geoff
