We are planning a trip from Broken Hill - Tibooburra - Innamincka - Cordillo Downs - Birdsville - Longreach. Can anyone tell me if a camper van could do this trip and if so would a off-road campervan be essential or could a on-road model get through. Thanks.

If it is dry, you should be able to get through from Broken Hill to Birdsville in on-road model if you take it slowly, but I would not recoomend it. Don't know what is the road like to Longreach...

Hi Wes
I have not been from Tiboorburra-Brokenhill but the rest of the trip is not rough if you just poke along, lots of rocks from Innamincka - Cordillo Downs and part way to Bridsville. Although the road is not rough it would unadvisable to tow a campervan or trailer that is not set up for offroad work as the stones or rocks being flicked up by the tow car will cause damage without the vibration. We have an off campertrailer and would have no hesitation towing it along this route.

Cheers Mattie

Wes,

What is your definition of a Camper van?

I owned a "Camper van" once. It was a Toyota Highace 2WD Diesel and although it had a higher ground clearance than a standard car, it was not an "Off Road" vehicle. Many of the roads in that area are across gibber plains and you really need the extra protection offered by a true "Off Road" vehicle. Some sections can be either soft, or boggy and the ability of proper 4WD will soon be apparent.

Now, if you mean a Camper Trailer towed behind a 4WD vehicle, then I would suggest again that you consider an 'Off Road" version trailer which not only gives you the extra ground clearance, but more rugged suspension, etc.

A little trip along the corrugated sections and you would soon agree with the wisdom.

Have a good trip.

Wes,As others have said the Walkers Crossing road is the way to go. However you will need to check the weather as this road was closed when we were there 3 weeks ago. It is only 320 kms compared to 430km for Cordillo Downs. We had to drive this road as WC was closed, it took us 11 hrs with 3 vehicles (no trailers) the locals said in good weather it should take 7 to 8 hrs. Truckster is right in that the road south of the border is the worst, it goes gibber for 150 k's then sand with corrigations then dirt into Innaminka.
You can do it , but take it real slow or better still go Walkers Crossing, the view is better as you follow Cooper creek for some of the way.

Hi Wes

I just got back last week from a trip across the simpson ayers rock and so on we drove to birdsville via walkers crossing and unless its dry up alot theres no way i would take a camper trailer in there we help a english bloke out with his camper as he was bogged to the axles took about 1 hour to get him out when we got to birdsville we told the nat/parks guys and they shut it that night the 18th sept the cordillo downs road also was a bit wet and very rough talking to fellow campers in birdsville and all this depend on how off road is your camper if its a on road model leave it at home or get a off road one on our trip we saw 3 trailers by the side of the road broken in half hope this doesnt put you off but please think about it before you leave home
