it continually amazes me why people are so concerned with fuel economy considering its a 2ton+ vehicle and costs $64K...but ...it will be better than a petrol model I reckon

They are very good averaging around 10-11 litres per 100km, check out the Toyota website and it has this listed.

Whoever made the comments , "it amazes we why people are so fussed about fuel encomomy for a 2.5 tonne vehicle" needs to have their head checked, we all like the size of the cruiser , but because it is so big we expect to suffer the pain at the bowser, especially given todays prices, so the fuel economy of these big bangers is a real important issue.

More economy would suit many of us but buyers want power.

I'd be happy with lower power and another gear or two.

Hybrids are on the way.

For comparable running it will use less fuel than a large passenger sedan and some medium sedans for that matter.

It will perform flawlessly subject to regular servicing and no driver abuse.

Get some fourby driver training and go out and really enjoy yourself.

"For comparable running it will use less fuel than a large passenger sedan and some medium sedans for that matter." RUBBISH!!! We are on this site because of our love of the outdoors and 4WDing. These vehicles however have limitations, to wit speed & economy.

Tanka, ev700 is correct. My commodore uses 11/13 V6 stock standard s/pack, 2001 model with 56,000klms on it. My wifes pulsar uses 10L per 100klms city, freeway. My 2.8 hilux uses 10 per 100 klms My wifes uncle's 100 series turbo deisel automatic brand new last year uses 10/11 per 100 klms so I would say his estimate on fuel usage for a 100 series would be pretty close to the money.Oh and by the way the 100 series will sh@t all over my wifes 1.8 pulsar auto pulling up out of the hawksbury in sydney heading up to the central coast. They are a brillant vehicle, great fuel economy for the size of the vehicle. Yes his economy jumps too 16/18 when pulling his 22 foot van but I'd like to see my commodore pull it with my fuel also jumping to probably around 18/20 per 100 klms. Every one to there own. Tanka,

These guys are right. My 98 model 105 Series returns 10-10.5 L/100km. It has the skinny tyres, no roof racks, and a large winch/bull bar on the front. It weighs in at 3 tonnes full of fuel, and a couple of people.

We have had this discussion before, you and I. Just because your patrol returns poor economy, doesn't mean everyone elses vehicle has to.

Looks like those commodore figues I quoted were about right too....

Cheers,

Chump

The 100 Series TD gets better fuel economy than my wife's EL Falcon and also better than her Commodore (before the Falcon).

Also, if the boat is hooked up to the Falcon (which is a good tow vehicle), the Falcon drinks like there is no tomorrow, unlike the Cruiser.

The TD Cruiser is a miser on a trip. The economy of the DiD Pajero and the 5 cylinder LandRover diesel are even better!

cheers

I seem to strike a chord with these claims, yet this is a forum for debate so everyone is not here to agree with each other. I use my 2002 VXII commodore wagon to drive from W'gong to Sydney to work, so I average about 40,000 k's a year. It now has (130,000). I seem to get about 9.5L /km on average. Admittedly this is 50% freeway driving, which helps me. My patrol is an 86 3.3td so it is hideous on fuel but I knew that before I bought it. I am also aware that the new cruisers use considerably less. Last month I was driving home from Victoria up the coast road, & filled up at Morwell. I filled up again at Ulladulla (NSW Sth Coast) and still had 120kms to empty on the trip computer. (guage showed just under 1 quarter) Maybe someone can work out the distance and correct me on my fuel consumption figures on a 65ltr tank. Im not trying to start an argument, just interested in the topic. If the cruisers are using less juice, I take my hats off to them and stand corrected. Im just getting excellent results from my commodore. Maybe its a freak car, or perhaps it has a fitch installed that I don't know about!!!!

Tanka,

I think what we are all forgetting in this debate is the one huge variable that cannot be controlled....the driver!

Everyone has different driving habits. Some are aggressive with the accelerator, some aren't. Some can read the traffic ahead very well, and use minimal braking.

I think we are both right in our arguments, and may have to agree to disagree. Your commodore gets 9.5L/100km with 50% freeway. My cruiser would be a little over 10 with a bit of freeway thrown in. The commodore is a little more efficient in that circumstance, I'll grant you. Hell, I bet you can get down in the 8's if it was all freeway! BUT my cruiser is hardly a gas guzzler.

In the city, I average 10.5, and have gotten up to 11 in bad traffic. A commodore would probably use a tad more than that, in similar circumstances.

It would seem, depending on the circumstances, the two vehicles are similar, would it not? We haven't yet factored in the 5000km oil changes, which blows my figures sky high!.(.lol...the joys of a diesel).

Cheers,

Chump

Would have to agree with you there chump, I have had the commodore down as low as 8.4L per 100 but that was filling up on the way up to noosa, but that was pulling stright into a garage filling up then straight back to 100 klm with the cruise on. Sit in traffic on a daily basis to and from work and it will climb to the figure said before,11/13 per 100. Yes as you said changing oil more often in the diesels than petrol but I reckon you would be in front compared to if you were running a petrol cruiser/ patrol 20/22 per 100 around town, ouch, but if people go to buy one of these then they need to do there homework first in regards to fuel consumption and not whinge later on about how much they use. Personally I would noy buy petrol in a cruiser/patrol due to fuel usage, but thats me,some people prefer diesel. In a smaller 4wd eg hilux dont think fuel usage is a major consern as they are smaller and dont have the weight of the bigger ones. And yes as you said driver plays a major roll in how much fuel they use. Eg take off flat out only to stop at the next set of lights,as I slowly come up to you the lights change and I'm still rolling so I dont have to come to a dead stop or as you said lookin further than just the car in front to see what's happening and make the correct changes as to keep a steady pace without having to start and stop. Have a great weekend, drive safely Regard Vitara

G'day DavidT

Is that for an RV model, even so $64000 is pretty steep. If look around you would save a fair bit. Country dealers are quite often cheaper.

This is the on the road price, nothing left to pay?

The Recommended Retail is $71,500 + ORC. This is the end of the 100 series however, including the TD engine which will not comply with our new regs soon. So, you're looking at a new shape and new engines in 2007 I think - it is a long way off though. I'm sort of in the same situation - ready to upgrade from my current 98 Prado V6 to one of the large diesels, but really worried about the shape and engine change 12 months or so down the way.

Travelling in convoy a couple of years back, Perth-Ningaloo, a TD 4.2 Cruiser GXL consistently gave 1-2mpg better than my TD4.2T patrol. Fully loaded, large roof racks, etc, 120km/h was about 21mpg for the cruiser, 19 for the patrol.
(120k, officer, no, I couldn't have been doing that!)
Patrol shapes up a lot better at 100k for economy.

I have had quite a few issues with my TD manual in regards to economy, even had it back to toyota for a look as it was up around the 16-18km/l. I did everything know to man to improve this(Dtronic, took all the bits back off, drove at100kmh from Darwin to Brisbane) after toyota did some "work" it came back down to 14-15 but never any better.
Apart from that i wouldn't buy anything else, it is great.
I bought my GXL over the internet from O/S and had it waiting for my return, $62k

Great deal.

Hi Robsoff

How recent was that and was that the on road price?

I couldn't get anywhere near that for the current model.

Where from?

cheers

I think you meant 14-15L/100km, which is poor consumption.

16-18km/L would be good to aim for ;-)

We have a 2000 100 series diesel manual Landcruiser. We've just finished a trip from Perth to Port Hedland and back again, taking about 4 months to do it. We were towing a 2 tonne, fully loaded Roma caravan. Plus weight in the back of the Cruiser. As it was our first attempt at "The Grey Nomad" bit (and hopfeully, the last!) I monitored the fuel consumption closely. I used an laptop and an Excel spreadsheet to do the calcs etc.

Consumption worked out 17.3 kms/litre for the total trip.

The Cruiser did it like a dream. It ate up the miles and seemed to just love working hard. No complaints.

Whoops! Talking outta my bottom again! Just checked the actual spreadsheet that I used.

Make that:

Average fuel consumption over all the data was 16.57 litres per 100 kms. That's 17 MPG in old figures.

That's not bad for about 4.5 tonnes all up at 85 to 95 kmh in comfort.
