Hi Everyone,
We will be heading up to Darwin and Kakadu then the GRR next year for 3 months (June,July,Aug) I was told that we would need to book camping spots about 3 months in advance. Plan on getting to Broome around mid July. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Cheers

I often stay at the town beach caravan park, because the people there are friendly and I get on well with the backpackers and hippy types that associate there during the winter, they have their own separate area which is mainly tent orientated and it's a lot of fun if you mix with them and join in their festivities.

Would not suit older couples who require no noise and don't enjoy a big drink L0L
They have their own campers kitchen facility as well, and some of the more 'normal' people tend to congregate into the area to enjoy their music and festivities during the day :-)

And yes you generally have to book during the winter months to get a decent site by the beach, which is as far away from my ‘friends’ as you can get... but you can then walk there in a matter of minutes.

We were in Broome in early July this year - and the place was packed - went to the tourist bureau and they told us that all parks were full but the overflows were open - we had previously been told about this so were prepared - we were recommended by someone at 80 mile beach to go to the Pistol Club overflow - so glad we did - best spot - plenty of room - a bush like setting - lovely people - and even though there were heaps of people I niver once had to wait for a shower or toilet - bit of a queue for the washing machines but that is the same everywhere. The bonus with the Pistol Club is on Thursday nights you get to watch the guys do their skeet shooting thing - lots of fun. Not far out of town and close to The Boulevard Shopping centre and the jetty, as well as the Cable Beach road.

All Broome c/ps are usually fully booked out from June till Sept.! some of the gray nomads book up to 3 years in advance yes I couldnt believe it either! but having said that next year they have closed of free access to all the beaches eg Ganthiume to cable beach and user pays fee is to be introduced! I've spoke to heaps of people ( i'm a caravanner) and they are giving it a miss next year to try to get the local council to go back to free use.So you may have the place to yourself LOL. as there isnt much else to stay in Broome for.

What about further north up the beach near Willie Creek or Quondong Point?

Must say I haven't been there for 20 years now so will find out what gives next year. Will probably spend some time on 80 Mile beach

Brian, does that go for locals as well?
What sought of fee are they talking about charging?
Do camels have to pay?

A lot of peple I spoke to were going to 80mile beach or barn hill but as posted also there's always cape levique if you dont mind the road in.
Yes the locals too have to pay to to use the beach! $5 a day or $50 a month I heard, it will cripple Broome as the winter season keeps it ticking over for the rest of year.
Was at 80 mile beach last week and they are also hiking prices up for next season due to fuel, transport etc.
And they also banned dogs as from last week!

Brian

I take it one can still access the beach itself at 80 Mile beach. And where have they banned dogs from?

I remember being in a queue at Roebuck Bay CP in 1982! They gave us power and we were able to use the toilets for free while waiting to get in. In those days Broome was an idyllic place and we spent four months there.

In 1984 we also spent time in Broome and I did some work for Lord McAlpine and thers as the Cable Beach Resort was starting to develop.

These days I avoid caravan parks and crowded tourist areas if I can but will go a have a look next winter out of curiosity to see how much Broome has changed.

It is strange that every now and then the tourist industry or the WA government comes up with some crippling idea to stifle business and then they have to retract it again( eg camping by the roadside).

Yes you can still access the beach no problem , its the caravan park that have stopped dogs due to inconsiderate owners ruining it for responsible owners!
We stayed there almost 3 weeks, the fishing is fantastic and there are still some nice shells to be found if yuo go further up or down the beach. All vehicles have to off beach between 7.oopm - 7.00am.
Regarding cable beach you can still acess on foot for free! kind of them that I thought

Brad,
Have booked just yesterday for May 06 at Palm Grove CP. Cancellation policy is 28 days or one night's fee is retained. $ 27.50 / night for two people on a powered site with Top Tourist Parks discount. $ 20 membership fee for two years can be recouped quite easily.

Have you thought of moving up north a little? Middle Lagoon camp has plenty of room and very nice beaches. The road is not the greatest (corrogations) but if you take it easy - no problems. The beaches are just as good as Cape Leveque. You can see everything there is to see in Broome in a day (or two).

Hi Brad,
I personally like the Roebuck CP, as it's right on the water, and right in the town, nice atmosphere, plenty of shade. They don't take bookings for tent sites, but last year, I managed to book a caravan site for my tent. Had to book in Feb for a June site. A full week was quite cost-effective. Power was only a buck extra, so I took that as well. Got a magic site, right over the beach.
Sure you can see all of Broome in two days, but gee, it's nice taking the 4wd down onto Cable beach and veging out each day till sunset (clothes optional), then drinkies as the sun goes down.
Both Middle Lagoon and Cape Leveque (Kooljamin) are great places. You would also need to book ahead for Leveque, as there are limited sites there.
Cheers,
Gerry

Brad,

Same as Gerry said, we also stayed at Roebuck Bay CP and found it a great spot. Friendly admin people and they let you pick your own spot if not booked out.

We were lucky enough to be there in May, so they weren't busy. had a good spot on the western end among the trees with plenty of grass.

I didn't find Broome too expensive as rumours have it. And it is a place you could spend a week at, contrary to the beliefs of others. It all depends on what you are looking for.

Geoff.

Hi Brad (again)
Should have mentioned that Port Smith, south of Broome, north of Bidyadanga (LaGrange) is also a nice place for a tent/caravan. They even supply you with a steel hook for searching out muddies in the mangroves. Good fishing there. Have fuel as well, tho not cheap. Mini golf course, and other attractions. We liked it.

Brad, buy Jan Holland's books on Priceless Campsites and Rest Areas in the North of WA and one for NT. I'm doing a similar trip May to July from Perth up over then down. For Cape Leveque you will need a pass and booking. Do a google search for www.kooljaman.com.au which is Cape Leveque's aboriginal community, very helpful site and my email enquiry on a Saturday was answered within the hour. I've posted my trip itinerary on Australia 4x4 (Terracan site) it may offer some accommodation advice to you. I've gone as far as Alice Springs so far.

Cheers

I would recommend booking.

We stayed at the Vacation Village. They don't take bookings for camp sites, just van sites. We booked about 6 weeks before hand and were only able to get 1 night, noting we'd like more. A week before we up'd that to 3 nights, and then by the time we got there we picked up another night.

The idea is to get in first.

The camp sites looked a bit cosy for my liking. We were lucky to get a corner ensuite site so it gave us a bit more room. As we were out all day it didn't matter too much anyway.

If, as others have mentioned, you go to Cape Leveque, book at list some time there early and you more than likely will be able to get extra days there too.

Went through Broome a couple of months ago. Only stayed long enough to pick up supplies. Found the place a big rip off. Wouldn't go again

Hi Brad,
If only a night or two of acommodation is needed then you should have no probs. If you arrive in school holidays that is a different story.Broome council have 3 - 4 overflow parks (just open grassed areas with basic ammenities if you get stuck)we had no probs getting accom last year when we went ,we did book accom during school hols time. Cape leveque was great but you have to book as there is no free camping on aboriginal land as all the cape is. Willy creek has a max of 3 nights free camping. Good luck we can't wait to get back up there again.

Hi Brad

As others, I recommend to stay on the bushcamps on the northern beaches of broome. I prefer the seclusion on the Lurujararry Heritage Trail (Coulomb Point, Cape Bertholet) to the busy tourist resort at Kooljaman.

You find some picture from my trip up there in 2002 on my website
Lurujararry Heritage Trail

Looks like we got the same itinerary next year. I’ll travel the Gulf-Savannah Region, the Top End and the Kimberley from May to August. Hope to see you on the road!

Cheers

We were in Broome, July this year & stayed at Vacation Village.
My opinion of Broome, OVERPRICED, OVERCROWDED & OVERRATED.
Found as we travelled South that most people we met had the same opinion

Hi Thomjor,
You're probably being a bit unfair, tho you are right about it being overcrowded. This is in part due to Native Title restricting further land releases.
As far as cost goes, 15 years ago when there was only one supermarket there, it was cheaper to go to Derby and shop at Woolies, but Broome now has heaps of competition wrt supermarkets, and costs are not much more than Perth. Fuel costs are very high, but that is par for any town a long way from a refinery. I have found that CPs there are similar cost to places I have stayed at Darwin, Alice, etc. Hotel/resort accom is on a par with other resort towns. Remote Kimberley sites can cost a lot more for camping. Kooljaman and Middle Lagoon are not cheap, and facilities limited, but the experience is fantastic.
As far as being overrated, if you take the toursist brochures with a grain of salt, and don't expect lush palm trees beyond the town centre (it is tropical savannah country, after all), then it's a great place. If you are expecting a copy of Cairns, then you will be disappointed.
Still one of my favourite spots to stop off at when travelling thru the north.

Hi Brad,

Just got back from doing a similar trip but left Broome for last (middle Sept) no problems with accomodation then. Maybe you could rejig the route as July is the busiest time. BTW loved Broome and easily stay there a week (made easier with Sept activities in town and that the lady folk needed time out from the bush).

The sail fishing is marvelous (caught 3 myself - what a high), so is the fishing generally, umpteen number of tours (do the horizontal water falls from Broome or Derby), Camel ride on Cable Beach at sunset, the pearl farm, Malcolm's croc farm and possibly repairs to the vehicle (Broome is not a bad place to do this if you're having problems)

Great resteraunts and the open air cinema as well as a jump off point for Cape Leveque.

Kind regards

I certainly don't like the idea of $5 per day for going onto Cable Beach. Why do they have to charge so much if the only problem is clearing rubbish left by a few inconsiderate pigs!
Why not a dollar per day and employ someone with a quad bike and trailer to patrol the beach the same as some metro beaches do?
That would keep the beach clear as there's not that much rubbish around that I've ever seen and it would employ someone else for the season.
Or is that what they don't want to do, employ someone.
Broomes not all a rip off though.
Get gas bottles filled at the Home Hardware in Guy Street where they charge for only how much you use, not by the original weight of the bottle!
For those wanting to leave vans in storage there are a couple of places which won't rip you off as well.
We generally go to the Cable Beach caravan park on Middleton Road as although they ain't cheap, they're friendly and the facilities are good. In July we stayed for 3 weeks before going to the Bungle Bungles and GRR etc. and couldn't get back in when going back to pick up our caravan so went to Roebuck Bay park instead. Never again if we can help it as the woman in the office had a face that would have turned lemons sour and an attitude that went with it.
Must have been all those old folk like us that did it!
It is very commercialised but we still like it and will try the camping out of town towards Cape Leveque next time.
Have a good trip.
Alan H
