I'm looking for a romantic camping spot

Can anyone suggest a really secluded camping spot which would be perfect for a romantic getaway? I'm thinking of somewhere that might involve a bit of a walk to get there, so there's unlikely to be anyone else around, with some great views or a remote bit of beach or lake. It's for our anniversary and we really just want to get away from it all and have a romantic time without breaking the bank. Any suggestions - much appreciated.

I'm in NSW, but I don't mind travelling, even if it means flying somewhere, as long as it's still in Australia. Have you got somewhere in mind?

In SA I can suggest a few spots, Lincoln National park near Port Lincoln, it is a fairly big park with some beautiful beaches day trippers are restricted to 20 vehicles at any one time, but they only give out 10 camping keys/permits at any one time so seclusion in the evenings is easy. A number of property owners in the Mid and Northern Flinders ranges offer self-guided 4WD tours and camping on their properties, if you tell them exactly what you are after most of them are quite helpful, best place for contacts would be to start with the Wadlatta Outback centre in Port Augusta. But I am sure there are members out there who have plenty of suggestions a little closer to home for you.

Hey Snowy.. read your post re the Port Lincoln Nat Park.. sounds great, but when I checked out theNat Park website there is no mention of limited numbers for keys/passes etc.. Can you advise more detail about this. ie is there a specific region in the park where access is restricted.. I'd also like to find out more about the area and the NatParks site is abit light on.. any advice? Cheers

Coyote it is about 18 months since I last went there and a that time you still had to go in to the Port Lincol Tourist information office, pay a fee to get a key for the gates. Depending on whether you were just day tripping or camping as to how much you paid. But best to get the infor straight form the source so give the Port Lincoln Tourist office a ring on 08 8682 4688.

Cullyamurra Waterhole near Innamincka.

Of course, that involves a bit of a drive, rather than walk:-)

If you indicate to us where you are based, you may get some closer options.

Hi Ceri,

Good onya for remembering your anniversary,

Im doing an OS trip next year with my Father, and younger Sister (got a leave pass from Wife) Unfortunately I agreed to a certain date to fly out, tickets have now been booked by my Sister. The certain date happens to be my Wedding Anniversary (I forgot) cant spend time with wife for the day, wife not happy, and I think we all know what unhappy wifes are like.

So once again good onya for remembering and enjoy what ever spot you find.

In the Royal National Park Wattamulla is nice, but not sure if you can still camp there. We used to camp in this secluded spot about 500m from the main sites, and sit and watch eagles, foxes, and a platypus for a couple of days at a time.

Down the back of Mittagong, theres Starlights trail - half day walk in, lots of quiet places to camp, nice and flat, etc... just need to boil the water... Used to be a 4WD trail many years ago, until some tree hugger closed it.

Along Little River (somewhere along the water board tracks, down from Picton), there is a rock platform made up of black rock - the water runs along it for 100m or so, gets nice and hot, then spills into a huge water hole. There are seats in the waterfall, and you can honestly sit there for hours. It's about a 4 hour walk from the nearest camp site though.

Opposite Katoomba near Mt Solitary, theres this little rock platform that is big enough for 2 people and a fire. Not many people know it's there. It is under cover, so doesn't get too cold if the fire is kept going slightly. No water, and about a 5 hour walk.

Crosslands, near Hornsby is nice. Walk North for about half an hour, and there is a nice site on the edge of a deep saltwater creek. Might be closed now, as it has been a few years, and was really nice.....

Email me at chumpion at tpg.com.au if you want any specifics.

Cheers,

Chump

Have to agree with you Rod.

What beaches on Christmas Island, swimming on Christmas Island is like having a warm bath.

Only decent secluded place to swim with cool water was the grotto on the way to the old resort, never managed to get the place to myself, have to say the place has great diving.

I was there when the red crab mirgrated have to say this sucks just as much as the so called beaches, you can only miss so many crabs then the under side of your car starts smelling like the bottom of a rotting, smelly old fish bucket that has been left out in the sun.

Cheers

There are 2 Christmas Island one in the Pacific that is a resort and not part of Australia.

The Christmas Island off Indonesia is an Australian Territory that is really only a volcanic rock in the Indian Ocean, all food and berevages have to be shipped in from perth mostly by container a can of coke was $1.60 a bottle of water was $2.00 and a stubbie of beer $1.00, a packet of winfield blue 25,s cost about $2.50 anything else on the island cost a fortune that was about 4 years ago.

Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean is no resort, actually it's a major let down, I went to Christmas Island to visit my husband whislt he was working there.

Cheers

Its funny ya mentioned Brooklyn. I was just talking about the place with the wife a couple of days ago. We used to love going up there on weekends, getting the best fish and chips money could buy and just generally vegin out. Man that was 27 yrs ago. We used to stay in a unit above the boat hire joint right on the river.
Seems like a lifetime ago...well 2 kids and and about 30kg ago lol. When we get the coaster finished we have promised ourselves a trip back there. One of the great places to visit..or at least was.

One of the nicest spots I have been is near Narrabri.

I found it at the end of a 4 day walk, no one around, secluded and has a nice little swimming hole.

It's in the top end of Mt Kaputar National Park, called Mil Bula Waterhole.

I would check with NP in Narrabri about water. when I was there it had been pretty wet and the water was great but it may have suffered through the drought.

It is not what my missus would like for the aniniversary but Iliked the spot. If your girl will do that hang on to her, you've got a gem. We are actually going through the same question at the moment, "where to go for the anniversary?". Camping has not been mentioned.

"Hey Honey........"

Woops!

I just re read this and it sounds like you have to walk for 4 days to get to the spot. Not so.

The spot is a couple of hours drive out of Narrabri to the car park which is quite secluded and then about 10min to an hours walk depending on exactly where you go.

Why not have alook at West Kunderang. The last remnant of one of the old cattle run leases, located in the middle of the Oxley Wild Rivers Wilderness Area.

Accessible from Armidale or up from Kempsey.

They allow now more than five parties in at any time, and nobody actually lives on the property.

Fishing, swimming or canoeing on the Macley River. Beautiful bushwalking or just lazing around.

Kangaroos, wallabies, platapussies, possums the full array of birdlife etc:
Bass, freshwater herring, mullet and tortle thingies.

Contact: Cindy McRae
"Biston Park"
Wollomombi NSW 2350

Phone (02) 6778 1264 Mobile 0429 192 980

Cindy will put brochures etc: in the mail to you

My wife and I had a beautiful eight days there and have sworn to go back. If you go during the week you usually have the place to yourself. That's out of school holidays of course.

70Ks from the nearest shop so you take every thing in with you and you must bring your garbage out.

There is a solar powered sat phone on site for emergencies pre-programmed for free callls and if you do need to contact the office you can make arrangements to purchase a phone card from Cindy.

Other than having been a full paying visitor I have no other connection to West Kunderang

Big Shelley Headland just south of Angourie in north NSW.
Used to be able to drive in there (about 20 years ago) but it is all walking now. I think you can still camp up on the headland. Beautiful spot with ocean view, long lonely beaches, huge cliffs with caves, and lots of rockpools to explore.
Just guessing it would be about a 10km hike from the car park.

One of our favourites.

Have fun,
Brett

Isnt it good to live here in oz....for us, the west aussie beaches and sunsets were special.... If you like a walk,or own a 4wd, we just got back from Mount Airley near Capertee....Col, the owner, allows campers and has put a road up to his old mine workings ontop of the mountain. You can camp up there wherever you like.
He has a Grotto to walk through and the forest up there is like Jurrassic park, not to mention the shear cliffs to look out into the Capertee valley from.

Ceri

If you're willing come to QLD i have two suggestions.

1.
The upper noosa river has 15 individual campsites along it, which are only accessible by canoe (no motor boats). You would normally book two or three sites and make your way along the river over a few days. People generally pick up canoes at Elanda Point but it would be better if you can arrange to have them towed to Kinaba INformation Centre as the row across the lake is a PITA. The section between Kinaba and Harry's hut is spectacular so don't be tempted to just drop your canoes in at Harry's and go from there.

2.
A few years ago (about 10) we camped with some friends on whitehaven beach on withsunday island. Everybody knows that this is THE beach to be at, and hoards of day trippers go there between 9 am to 3pm. Outside those hours, the whole 2km stretch of white silica sand is yours. (There was one other tent there besides us.) It was actually refreshing to see the day trippers and have a game of volleyball with them. Many of thewithsunday islands have camping permited so you can choose the one you prefer. ( south mole is another good one)
You can often get cheap flight to Hamilton Island or Proserpine with any of the three airlines and then get a boat out to the islands. By the way, there are no marine stingers around the islands so it's safe to swim all year around (but don't go during the summer storm season)

Both of these places have (had) no facilites so you must be self sufficient and the cost is $4 per person per night.

Cheers.

R.

Ceri,
One of the best best weekend I have spent with Belinda was in Sydney. Darling Harbour to be exact.
Went in Friday night and parked the Cruiser at the Motel and didn't pick it up until Sunday morning.
We went to the casino and all around China Town, walked to the Rocks did a harbour cruise and went to Mainly on the ferry.
This might not be what you want but for me it was some where different to go.
