Hi all,

Purchased a pioneer argyle in Sept 05.
Looking for ideas and suggestions for bike carrier setups for this model ie photos would be good. We are wanting to carry 2 m'tain bikes.
We have a 3 jerry/2 gas bottle set in front of storage box. There is not much room between this and the stone deflector. Am thinking we might have to change the jerry can/ gas bottle set up,to gather more room otherwise the bikes will sit up like a flag pole to clear them.
Any suggestions would be apprieciated

I am toying with the idea of fitting a Haymen Reece receiver to the underneath rear of our Cavalier Trailer, and then using the bike carrier that goes onto the tow ball to carry out boys two bikes when we go away.

Just a thought

Have seen some people weld on a SHS section on the rear of the trailer that resembles a hayman reese hitch.
Then get a bike rack that slots inot the hayman reese type hitch.

I have a bike rack like that for the rear of my pajero. Instead of the usual bike rack bolting on the ball point, it has a 50 shs and hole for the pin.

One idea, see what else comes up.

I have been advised previously that attempting to put a Hayman Reese hitch type receiver on the rear of a CT is asking for trouble, and that under no circumstances should it be done.

Apparently it's something to do with the extra forces/strain placed on the item as it is at the very back of the combination (vehicle + trailer) and the movements up and down, etc. are seriously amplified back there - resulting in most welds failing and the owners finding that the rack and bikes are sitting a few k's back in the middle of the road. Expect this is more a case if travelling on bad tar or dirt roads but who knows.

Anyone else been advised of this?

Rusrob,

Why not use Pioneer's Gas Strut Assisted Boat Loader. The rack should attach to the camper without the need to tamper with normal camper setup or storage space. I'm sure the rack could be adapted to enable the bikes to be strapped to them laying down. When you get to camp, the boat rack, with bikes attached, simply flips over to enable the camper to be set up.

Would be a worthwhile accessory that would suit your purpose and enhance the resale value of the camper should you ever wish to sell it. Or you may even wish to replace the mountain bikes with a tinnie at some later stage.

I picked up Tambo Cooper last week and got the hayman reese type
hitch welded on the back of the trailer. I am using Swagman XP bike carrier
with it.

I have a Hayman Reece style attachment at the rear of my CT - Wandering Star Wanderer.

Received similar advice about issues of attaching bikes to rear. Issues raised were possible excessive sway on CT and excessive bounce. Thought I would still give it a try.

Have since taken it up north and various other trips - no issue with sway.

But recent trip along Holland Track resulted in one broken bike rack - bounce factor. I think this could have been avoided by securing the rack with a tie-down strap higher up the rack - back to the CT. Was using a cheapish bike rack - and basically broke at joins. ie my own fault.

Have now upgraded to stronger bike rack - Thule and take more care in securing higher up.

Recent weekend away - worked great - no drama.

Thankyou to all of your suggestions.
Pioneer have come up with a big carrier kit which will suit my purposes. It will be mounted in front section of the draw bar between jerrycan holder/gas bottle set up and stone guard and has the capacity to carry 3 bikes This will eliminate removing the bikes when setting up C/T.
I will have to locate the stone guard further forward but will not be a big problem.

cheers
