Any good sites within 1 - 2 hrs of Batemans Bay for a 4wd and caravan?
The 4by is a diesel Disco. The van will not be off-road, but able to be towed along reasonably rough forestry tracks etc. Have searched the archives, but only a few references. Would appreciate your suggestions.
Thanks ..............

There is the camping ground at Nelligen, opposite the famous Steam Packet hotel.I havent camped there yet but are going to,have a friend that raves about it,right on the Clyde river. Then there is Shallow crossing camp ground ,very picturesque, good for a quiet canoe paddle to up the clyde whilst camped alongside it.Get yourself a copy of Craigies Batemans bay map. There is numerous forestry roads in the area some easy going, and others are 4wd only, all the distances are marked on the map from all turn offs etc.We use these maps for reference during the bay stages forest rallies in the area each year and are quite accurate with their distancing. Most news agents down here have them.If you travel along the river road you'll come across numerous campsites along the waters edge also. These are first in best dressed basis. But best get a copy of the Craigies map and your'e set.Cheers and have fun.

Agree with this spot,
Grew up there as a kid, sed to ride our pushbikes out there to go hand spearing in inlet and in the massive rock pool that used to be there. Now only end up there now and again but the wife and kids love the place.
cheers

Bawley point si great for caravan camping, Race course beach; Kioloa; Merry beach; Pretty beach are all good....this is 45min north of the bay Pidgeon house has camping area - never camped there so im not sure about a van and the road i cannt remember...this road/track is 5-10min from turnoff of Bawley point area. Narooma is about 3hrs from Nowra - so 1.5hrs south of the bay.....this is on a lake and is touristy. Shallow crossing which is south of Ulladulla is supposed to be great - must go there myself!! cant suggest too much more for camping cos we head west more than down that way....just depends on what type of camping you would like to do!!

Good luck and enjoy!!

Evening Kieth_A,

We go down the Bay way from Canberra 4 or 5 times a year.

We were using the campground at Neligen which is great but it is a formal campground some sites with power some without, you can also get cabins etc not that you'll need them with your van, they have amenities for kids to play and a full size oval for kids to play footy ,cricket or fly kits etc and cooking etc and have hot showers ( Pay showers). its also a boat/ski type camp park, They have a web site so you can look them up and get a feel for what they have.

We went out and had a look at the Shallow crossing camp ground not far from Neligen last Xmas as we were going to stay there for a week but found it very plain, probly very good if thats your thing but we thought it to be just a mowed paddock with very little appeal and very poor amenities not that that would stop us normaly, (but a lot of other people love it there - simply not our thing ).

The place we've been going to is about 40minutes past Batemans Bay called Potatoe Point. You go south past the bay through Moruya down to Bodalla and turn left at the Pie shop near the cheese factory, its about five minutes along that road you come to the township of Potatoe Point, as you enter the edge of the town there is a left turn then another left over a small wooden bridge. You travel along a dirt road for about 2 kl's and you come to the camp ground which is called Beachcombers Holiday Park at Blackfellas Point (Potatoe Point)

They dont have any powered sites but have full amenities there : Free hot showers Flushing loos and you can buy your basics from the office such as bread , milk, ice, gas etc. It is an informal style camp ground with a lot of wildlife around for the kids or yourself to appreciate. Hand feeding the wallabies or emues etc. Partly bush camping but still got the kid friendly beach, fishing etc. Very spread out and generaly not very busy. We have have kids and love the interaction with the animals etc. Go there several times a year.

If you want any photoes of the areas drop me a line and we may have some we can email you to give a better idea of the different places.

Hope that helps,
Boo

The first few weeks after Xmas its usually neer full, apart from then we've always found it to be no more than about 1/3 capacity at worst.
We always assumed it was quiet because there were no powered sites. (We're self sufficient for power etc).

P.S.... Notice that your've got good choice in vehicle, unlike the other poor kiddies with their Tonka toys... hehe.

Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to reply.
Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.
It is for a friend in Batemans Bay, without the Net (renting; cost etc).
Will pass all the info on. I am certain it will be useful.

We like to stay at Yadboro Flat. It is inland from Ulladulla, on the road that goes to the Pidgeon House Mountains. It is a great natural camp site, with only a drop toilet, right on the river. If Bush camping is your thing, and you prefer roads that are only dirt roads, not tracks (ie 2wd), then this is a great place to try! - Jo

I stayed in Duea NP west from the coast earlier this year. A couple of good camping spots just of the road right on the river. Good spot with toilets and fireplaces.
