Was watching the Sunrise Show on 7 this morning and weatherman Grant Denyer was crapping on about the Simpson and how some people helped them drag the satellite dish trailer across the desert.
And up comes a shot of the Troopy and Trailer going seriously off track, churning up the dunes, as discouraged by Parks and Wildlife policy.
GD states "The Simpson was a big surprise. I thought it would be all flat country"
Just goes to show how dumb these TV people really are.
There was some vague mention of the bush
toilet. I wonder if they burnt the paper?

Yes now we can wait for the press release from Parks telling us how they have issued fines for the offence that was seen on national tv NOT!!!
No footage of the Disco's performing though ;-))

"I thought it would be all flat???????.
Grant!!!!!!! google son google. ten minutes and you could have more info than your research dept.
And we are concerned by some of the quetions asked here. Our overseas visitors have more nouse (spelling?) than these guys.

Willem.
Be kind. I was actaully surprised at the small amount given my efforts to fill the LC.
Soft sand, a windy day and my right foot, not a good combination with the windows down.
Now I do understand that there were extenuating circumstances but I did come away with a record of my own from the trip. ??????????
All the best with the next trip. Do you now have extra spare nuts ;-))

BTW - someone recently was engaged in travel in the SD to some extent (I don't have the detail) - seems like the plan may have been to cross both ways, all OFF TRACK. Some more detail may emerge.........

Probably me, although this was mainly in the Northern Territory and it was not an east west crossing. We were using some shot lines to reach our objective.
With the southerlies blowing up a gale in the desert in recent times, tracks can be obliterated within 24 hours

You guys have said it all , but there is one thing i will add is that maybe he should stick to dancing and not on the dunes , And I am not knocking his abillity to dance as he was good but really how could Ch 7 not let thier man win .Kostya Tszyu has bought a lot more interest to our/his Country than the hot footer

Doug, we reckon it was rigged as
well. I reckon Kostya was far more entertaining. And not the precocious little brat that Denyer is :-)
Commercial TV is getting worse by the day, but CH7 is the pits. Does anyone else want to puke when the Koch and Doyle show comes on in the morning?

The show was decided on sms votes. Now please tell me who, of the viewing public are going to pick up thier phones and actually sms in a vote? More often than not it's the
young-youngish females who think Grant Denier is a charming, funny, good looking, nice guy (or so I was told as my other half frantically sms'd her vote in for Grant). Not hard to see who's going to win!
On the Simpson thing - yes I had a laugh at the telly this morning at how apparently ill prepared they were but also (having never travelled into the remote outback) immensley enjoyed the pictures they showed! :-)

Rigged? NO WAY. Just because a channel 7 personality won every series.
In the UK, the show is on channel 4 (I think) and YEP you guessed it. A channel 4 personality won every time. The same in Poland on TVN, Holland, USA and Spain. Every series was won by a person from the channel the show is on.
Well, that's what I've been told on ABC radio (as I don't watch the show).

Becuse you're likely to see a heap of Ch 9 & Ch 10 personalities on a Ch 7 show! Definately rigged! ;-) and 6 out of ten competitors are Ch 7 celebs or have sponsiorhips with Ch 7, so there was always a good chance that a Ch 7 personality was going to be up there!
They needed celebs for the show - of course they would pick ones that provide promotionaly value for thier own business! :-S

Good on him for getting out and about I reckon.
Bet most of you tut tutter's would look like complete tools if taken out of your 'natural environment' too. Carrying on like a bunch of old spinsters clucking away over the back fence you mob.
Unfortunately the handbrake watches that show for some inexplicable reason. Christ, is it just me or is that 'Kochie' an A number 1 prime grade dork
snorkel. His sidekick is about as beige and bland as you can get too. That show is pus - no argument from me on that count.
FYI, the correct pronounciation of Koch is actually 'kock' according to the H&K website. How appropriate.

That was the first thing i checked, being a sand desert, means sand, which means sand dunes, you can never be too prepared, also speaking to the locals is always a wise thing to do as well.
Have a good trip you'll love it, it's an amazing place.

It's good to see that most here know everything about everything, & will never get a surprise when they visit unknown areas!
When we did our Simpson trip we were also surprised, at the amount of vegetation, now we did heaps of research, but obviously not enough, because we didn't know everything either. In fact if you know it all, there is probably not much point in going.
In regard to Grant Denyer, If you had watched the program, & paid attention, you would have realised that he was only part of 'professionally led' trip.
I would also ask, who among you haven't pushed through the bush to get around a fallen tree or a rockslide .... it is only a matter of degrees!

Good point Shaker,
for me the main reason for visiting new
places (and sometimes old ones) is that I will find and experince something new. Thats what makes travelling so exciting.
Yes it does help to do some reasearch prior to going, but the surprises is what makes the best memories IMHO.

Lets not get too hypercritical there Willem..........."And up comes a shot of the Troopy and Trailer going seriously off track, churning up the dunes"
And where was that 2nd rig picture taken with a certain Nissan Patrol towing a trailer bogged to the axles? ;-)))
As poor as the image may be for the 4x4 fraternity, we need look no further than many of the pics on ExOz for examples of what we probably shouldn't be doing.
Not that I can talk as I pack the car for my next cross country adventure. B-)
We are without doubt our own worst enemy.

Ahhh yes Craig
It was a comment high-lighting what one is not supposed to do as per the Parks and Wildlife criteria.
I am afraid that I am guilty by incriminating pic of straddling a sand blow in an attempt to move along the desired path. And yes, I do travel offtrack and have done so recently.
I suppose we can argue about this till the cows come home without a result but I do try to have a minimal impact when doing cross country stuff. I have noted in another thread on this page that 40 years later the graded cleared lines through the desert have all but disappeared. We also found that tracks we had made the day before had been covered by sand the following morning as a stiff breeze had sprung up just after sunrise.
Of course, we(4wders and EO forumites) are into recreation. Lets not forget the Miners, Anthropologists, Archaeologists, Social Workers, Pastoralists and others who frequently drive through unchartered terrain leaving their marks as well.
Cheers

I'm with you Willem on the minimal impact when going cross country & while only small numbers of people are doing it, the tracks left will often be covered in less than a day. The problem of course is when it gets too popular & large convoys take the same routes any damage is compounded & leads to areas being closed.
I for one are impressed by your photo getting the trailer over the dune (damm close) but there maybe others more politcaly correct than I who would use it as ammunition against us.

Some interesting comments above, most not too complimentary either. You are a cynical lot for sure.
It may surprise some of you that it wasn't just Grant and a couple of cameramen on the trip.
I counted 6 Land Rover Wagons, plus a couple of Tray Tops. If you allowed say two people per vehicle, that equals a minimum of 16 support staff. And this is not counting the vehicle Grant was in and who had already departed before our arrival.
