Willem
Was watching the Sunrise Show on 7 this morning and weatherman Grant Denyer was crapping on about the Simpson and how some people helped them drag the satellite dish trailer across
the desert.
And up comes a shot of the Troopy and Trailer going seriously off track, churning up the dunes, as discouraged by Parks and Wildlife policy.
GD states "The Simpson was a big surprise. I thought it would be all flat country"
Just goes to show how dumb these TV people really are.
There was some vague mention of the bush
toilet. I wonder if they burnt the paper?

Crikey! Certainly a lot of vitriol squirting around here. Such indignation!!!!
Good on him for getting out and about I reckon.
Bet most of you tut tutter's would look like complete tools if taken out of your 'natural environment' too. Carrying on like a bunch of old spinsters clucking away over the back fence you mob.
Unfortunately the handbrake watches that show for some inexplicable reason. Christ, is it just me or is that 'Kochie' an A number 1 prime grade dork
snorkel. His sidekick is about as beige and bland as you can get too. That show is pus - no argument from me on that count.
FYI, the correct pronounciation of Koch is actually 'kock' according to the H&K website. How appropriate.

Onya V8.....agree with your comments re that Koch-head on ch 7 and his sidekock. I have 2 blokes who work where I do, both with the same surname and they pronounce it "Koff"....go figure.

It's good to see that most here know everything about everything, & will never get a surprise when they visit unknown areas!
When we did our Simpson trip we were also surprised, at the amount of vegetation, now we did heaps of research, but obviously not enough, because we didn't know everything either. In fact if you know it all, there is probably not much point in going.
In regard to Grant Denyer, If you had watched the program, & paid attention, you would have realised that he was only part of 'professionally led' trip.
I would also ask, who among you haven't pushed through the bush to get around a fallen tree or a rockslide .... it is only a matter of degrees!

Good point Shaker,
for me the main reason for visiting new
places (and sometimes old ones) is that I will find and experince something new. Thats what makes travelling so exciting.
Yes it does help to do some reasearch prior to going, but the surprises is what makes the best memories IMHO.
.....now back to getting the magna ready for the
gunbarrel highway.........

Lets not get too hypercritical there Willem..........."And up comes a shot of the Troopy and Trailer going seriously off track, churning up the dunes"
And where was that 2nd rig picture taken with a certain Nissan Patrol towing a trailer bogged to the axles? ;-)))
As poor as the image may be for the 4x4 fraternity, we need look no further than many of the pics on ExOz for examples of what we probably shouldn't be doing.
Not that I can talk as I pack the car for my next cross country adventure. B-)
We are without doubt our own worst enemy.
Cheers Craig.........
With no incriminating rig pic.

Ahhh yes Craig
It was a comment high-lighting what one is not supposed to do as per the Parks and Wildlife criteria.
I am afraid that I am guilty by incriminating pic of straddling a sand blow in an attempt to move along the desired path. And yes, I do travel offtrack and have done so recently.
I suppose we can argue about this till the cows come home without a result but I do try to have a minimal impact when doing cross country stuff. I have noted in another thread on this page that 40 years later the graded cleared lines through the desert have all but disappeared. We also found that tracks we had made the day before had been covered by sand the following morning as a stiff breeze had sprung up just after sunrise.
Of course, we(4wders and EO forumites) are into recreation. Lets not forget the Miners, Anthropologists, Archaeologists, Social Workers, Pastoralists and others who frequently drive through unchartered terrain leaving their marks as well.
Cheers

I'm with you Willem on the minimal impact when going cross country & while only small numbers of people are doing it, the tracks left will often be covered in less than a day. The problem of course is when it gets too popular & large convoys take the same routes any damage is compounded & leads to areas being closed.
I for one are impressed by your photo getting the trailer over the dune (damm close) but there maybe others more politcaly correct than I who would use it as ammunition against us.
Cheers Craig.........

True but willem was the first to jump down Ch7 for doing the very same thing. That is the point being made.
