Hi all.
we have an off road caravan and will be travelling with our border collie from wa in august. We want to camp in or around the flinders and gammon ranges(I know we cant take the dog into the nationl parks)but would be grateful for any info on some good offroad camping spots and co ordinates if possible. We will be spending around 2 weeks in the area,we will be pretty much self suffient.
We will be travelling down the Oodnadatta Track prior to the Flinders.
Many thanks.

Eric,

Pretty much all of the Flinders Ranges is National Park territory.
Even private stations such as Willow Springs (Skytrek) or Rawnsley Park have a "No Pets" policy.

Blinman township in the nothern part of the Ranges may be OK, or Hawker township to the South. But I wonder where you would be able to travel during the day, to visit places where dogs are not allowed.

We have a Border Collie ourselves and she would just love to help round up the sheep on these stations, but alas, pets and travelling do not always gell.

Travelling down the Oodnadatta track, you should be OK at the Caravan Park opposite the Hotel.

May I suggest you look at where you are planning to stop overnight and ring the camping grounds to see if they allow pets.

Good advice from sandman. No pets in NP and most private properties. Even day trips would probably be out. Not sure about caravan parks but there are books with lists of these in them. If you travel with a dog it severely limits where you can stay i suppose. Especially with an active dog like yours. Not only do they chase and scare native animals but their urine scent disturbs their territorial markings also.

Hold on Eric R... Ther eis a porperty just outside the NP right on the edge of Winlpena Pound that is a combination caravan park/ bush camping site. .we have stayed there and they are pet prefindly. we have 2 beagles who have stayed there with us and they are in fact encouraged.. there is also a smal airstrip there that offers flights over the Flinders/Wilpena Pound.. I'll have to research a little to find the name of the place but fro mmemory it's only about 20 mins from the Wilpena Pound camp site/start point for walks etc.

We also stayed just north of Blinman.. all the creek swere dry but completely isolted and spectacular.. The area is not Natioal Park, not sure what it is to be exact.. there is a few interesting mine sites to visit too. Although a fairly long (a couple of hrs of slwo first or low 2/3 rd to pass through the track.. we camped for a couple of nights and did day trips out, but it added an hr or 2 of driving just ot get out of there.. all part of the flavour though I guess...

Cheers

Thanks again for more info.
Where you camped did you have any co ordiates that might be helpful, also would we be able to get our offroad caravan in there.Sounds a great spot and totally secluded.I'mnot to worried about the time it takes to get in or out.
Cheers Eric

Eric,

Just north of Blinman there is a PAR that commences from Moollooloo Station and goes past the old Artimore ruins before coming back on the Wirrealpa-Blinman road.

If you decide to camp in that area there is a great section of creek bed camping in Hannigans Gap on that PAR not far in from Moollooloo Station. You would be able to get your offroad van in there with care.
It certainly isn't any hassle getting my camper trailer in.
It wouldn't be advisable to take the van any further than the gap though.

As has been mentioned in other replies there numerous other choices all with good camping.

Take your pick, and good camping.

Geoff.

Hi Eric,
You will need to be very careful taking a dog into this area. 1080 is widely used, sometimes indescrimantly.

G'day Eric.
Have just come back from there, after coming down the Strzelecki. There are some spots (up to 50k) out from Lyndhurst in dry creek beds just off the road, but I would be reluctant because of the 1080 issue mentioned earlier. Everywhere we went in the Flinders was either NP or Stations that don't allow pets.
Craig.

Hi Eric,

I just spent a fantastic week in the Flinders Ranges with my family, we stayed at a place called Rawnsely Park Station.

www.rawnsleypark.com.au/

I know for a fact that you can have pets there at the owners discretion !!!

Contact them first.

It is a beautiful place to stay and the facilities are top notch. Just make sure you as for a site that has a fire pit, we stayed on site 12A which has its very own fire pit.

All the best.
Craig.

Forgot to mention that the 12A is a Caravan Site. Powered with its own fire pit.

We have a Jayco Hawk Outback Camper.

I regularly stay at www.angorichinavillage.com.au/home.htm with my German Shepherd, personaly I take the dog through the national park as they are through roads. I don't allow the dog out of the 4by because they do a lot of baiting.

No DOG no GO!!!!!!!!!!!

We have just returned home after 2 weeks travelling and the first two nights we stayed at the Arkaroola Caravan/Camp Grounds. We took our 6 yr old blue heeler and had no trouble at all. Had to be on a lead but didn't mind. Spent the whole of the second day doing the tourist thing and there was plenty to see. Arkaroola is not national park. Enjoy your trip.
