Ditto.. Newel is shortest hence all the trucks.. were you looking for alternatives to the Pacific Highway?
The New England is pretty good because it's not so popular with tourist caravans etc slowing things down (not that there is anything wrong with caraveaners I hasten to add before I get shouted down by 90% of readers here...) and less trucks becuase the Pacific is more direct for them..
Were you hoping for the shortest way, the most scenic way. I guess you need to explain why you want an alternative and alternative to what??

Notso's route is the best, but if you don't have a year or so to do it well, it is possible to travel most of the way along the ranges.

If you have a caravan. you won't be able to use them all, but from my 1993 copy of "Explore Australia by Four - Wheel Drive" I will summarise below the route best I can. We have done most of it over the years, by 4WD with or without the Aussie Swag off road camper we had, and its a fun drive

Brisbane to Murwillumbah on the Pacific Highway, then off to Tyalgum, Cawongla, Kyogle, Mallanganee, Whiporee & back to the highway at South Grafton. Down the highway to Corindi Beach, then a series of forest trails to Coffs Harbour, then a bit of highway till you turn off to Bellingen, Bowraville and down the valleys to Kempsey. Then into the ranges again through state forests & big cities like Wild Bull Camping Area, Maxwells Flat, Blue Knob, Dingo Tops. Zigzag thro forests to Booral, where you join Bucket's way and on the bitumen to Sydney.

Then Pacific Highway to Nowra and right into the forests through Nerriga, Braidwood, Kain, Countegany and on through Numeralla to Cooma, thence Jindabyne, down Barry Way and turn off the bitumen after Little River in Victoria to Native Dog Flat Canmping area. Down through Benambra to Omeo then turn north along the Omeo Highway to Snowy Creek, onto the dirt to Mountain Creek CA and on to Tawonga & Bright. Down Buckland Valley Road, turn onto tracks to Mount Buggery Track and on to Benalla via Whitfield. Down the freeway to Melbourne.

Millions of variations possible, but you'll need a few maps and some up to date info. No doubt my book has been updated a dozen times and may be all you need.

That will certainly be more fun than the Newell, and take a lot longer. That the sort of thing you were after?

JoJo,

The "Minister for War and finance" and I did this tour as well about two years ago. (Well Mostly, we had a few detours) I remember however some of the GPS co-ords were a bit out, and some of the directions are a bit out of date. However it was an excellent trip and not too full on!

Let me know if you can't find the book, I can send you mine, (It has a few corrections and notes!)

Done the trip many times and found Hume & Princess is best. Not only is there more to see , its actually a shorter distance , also , you dont have to slow down for every little town.

Another way is Qantas or Virgin lol
