Got an email from the wife at work yesterday. She had just seen a camper trailer go past her office with a bloody solar powered garden light on the top of it.
What a great idea for camp lighting,a set of 4 or 6 and away you go. but i'm not taking any pot plants camping.
Mmmmmmmm, now where do we go next?

I toyed with the idea of taking one to mark the location of the loo - would save me wondering around aimlessly in the bush in the middle of the night trying to find a black loo seat :)

I have been using these lights for ages. Two next to the tent openig for night time visits to the loo and a couple around the camp. Has saved many a vertical decent.I even keep one on the dash all the time, you never know when you will need a couple of charged batteries or a little light. I would recomend upgrading the batteries to some thing a little more m/ah, camera batteries work ok.

I got my hands on some hard plastic glow in the dark stars, drilled a hole through them and attatched them to the tent zips, glued to torches etc.

I use the garden lights too, a cheap effective and easy to use solution.

Been camping with a few from here that use them on a regular basis. Get the ones with switches though so you don't have them going when you don't need. Mr and Mrs Al also take light sticks too which are great markers for tent/CT guy ropes in the spring tensioners.

Works brilliantly to mark the track entrance when on the beach at night ,just enough light as a reference point to find the way home.

Yes but they not seem to be all equal in the duration department. I bought a well made stainless unit just to test it out, charged it in the summer sun for two days (switch off) and it remained lit the first night until the wee hours, the next night it gave up by 11PM and thereafter never made it past that curfew time.

Took the thing apart and measured a few things. The batteries have enough capacity to light the single, rapidly pulsed, LED for the whole night but the dinky little solar cell is just too small to top up the empty batteries on the next day.

So, keep that in mind if you rely on the thing to find your way home in the dark.

I can think of far more useless things to take camping with you eg Flags & ornamental windmills & garden gnomes all ex crazy clarks, dimis, warehouse etc....
I was given a solar powered head light thing which is good leave it out in the sun all day and slip it over your head for nocturnal activities, gives only about 2 hours light but a good idea. I must ask Lionel Mussel about his theorey re Murphys laws on batteries dieing only when you need them...
At Main Beach CP on the Gold Coast I saw an elderly couple with fake plants in their annexe, so some people do take some weird things with them...My brother in law takes 7 surf boards with him & I travel with Sybil and thats like haveing your 3 best workers off sick...

I find a small torch works wonders, wherever your going and whatever your doing.

I have this little LED jobbie that runs for days on one AA (rechargeable) battery.

Ditto, also one of the head jobbies for "hands-free" times!

We take some cheap solar lights away to mark the toilet and any guy lines we are likely to trip over in the dark. We leave them in full sun all day near the solar panel and they are still on at 5:00 am.

You guys must have better solar garden lights than ours!! We've got 4 in the back yard and they are so crap I don't reckon I'd be able to find my beer if the light was sitting on the table!
