did anyone see chanel nine news tonight.
they done a story on rear visability tests that racv have just done.
at the end of the story they said that to go against beliefs 4wd generally had better rear vision than most passanger sedans and wagons.
i think teritory was second(i know not a 4wd)
pajero came in about 4th.
oh i forgot to mention
prado and rav4 were the worst.
cheers

Channel 7 news had a similar story tonight.....NRMA did the test, territory (with cameras) scored 5 stars(?) and prado 0 stars ;-)

WHY is there two stories by two different news stations using two different motoring bodies on the same night!!! Doesn't sound like a totally unbiased news story IMO.

NRMA and RACV are separate organisations, but are joint owners of the insurance company that underwrites all of the NRMA/RACV insurance. I'm sure tests like this are conducted in conjunction, and then branded NRMA for NSW and RACV for Victoria.

What they didn't say was that it is a good idea to make sure your kids are safe before charging off backwards. I always made sure they were inside or my wife was holding their hands before moving. Final responsibility is up to the driver. BTW the fog in Brisbane this morning was said to have caused car crashes. Magic!!!

Steve, my wife's kia rio has way worse blind spots and rear visibility than the 'cruiser. I didn't see the show so I don't know which vehicles were tested, but the rio is a new car; why are new cars like this allowed to have such poor visibility just for the sake of it's looks (you know, the rear sloping roof-line, small rear window, large rear panel between rear window and rear side windows). We expect a 4wd, van, truck to have restricted rear vision due to their functional design but modern passenger vehicles have poor visibility just so their 'lines' look good.

We had a very simple rule - If both kids were not in the car then the car did not move - It became second nature for them to stand in front and for me to not move.

Sure - camera would help and so would sensors when parking - When it comes to kids safety nothing is too expensive (well sort of) - We are lucky the kids are now teenagers - There have been too many tragedies.

I would expect persons height would affect visibility, at 130cm my aunt has trouble in all cars.
I had a falcon with a spoiler and yes couldn't see jack!

I operate and own earthmoving equipment and at the moment employ around 30 blokes..... At the moment I am supervising a major contract in Sydney
two rules I stand by and enforce to my staff.
1. All operators know that before they move a machine they must make sure they can see all the blokes they are working with that day.
2. All Labourers must make sure the operator can see them before passing a machine. As for vehicles driving past machines, they must wait to pass a machine until the operator acknowledges them.
I have worked on sites where 25 tonne machines have had mishaps and in the worst case incident somebody was killed after he was in the wrong spot at the wrong time. 25 tonnes on your ribcage dosen't leave many organs to donate.
It is so important to have your wits about you and be aware of everything around you whether in a car, 4wd, truck or any other moving machine.

I think most accidents are from the driver just not looking, not the make of vehicle!

I saw that news item as well. Couldn't believe what I heard and rolled off the lounge I was laying on, in surprise.

First bit of positive 4WD comment I have heard by any media outlet.

I nearly fell on the floor when I heard that too..

something liek "and everyone thinks its only 4wd's with bad reversing view" then they showed a commodore wagon, that was driven by that 12yr old mum that ran over her kid.

if all 4dw had camera's, would it make that prick..le scrubby find something better to do... like educate pedestrians (and cyclists) about the roadrules and possible serious consequences if they dont follow them!!

I also heard that there will be a push to have them (camera's) fitted as standard equipment

I wonder how aware people will be, of what is going on around them whilst there attention is fixed on the screen? Are they going to see that child or adult coming from the side towards the rear of their vehicle?
I suspect most reversing accidents may be more due to speed at which people reverse rather than poor visibility.

I was thinking the same thing - a spate of driving over kids coming up. Never had any trouble with my kids and I'm not sure that tunnel vision via a camera is going to solve a lack of general common sense. A camera is on my agenda nevertheless so I can more accurately connect with the trailer hitch.

Reckon a fair number of the public just have no power of anticipation, you see it all the time, people that put themselves and others in danger because they're in a hurry or something.

Kind regards

if you cant reverse with out a camera you should not be driving the vehicle in the first place, put your kids in the car with you and learn to use your mirors, if you cant do that buy a scooter and the world will be a beter place, truckdrivers dont use reverse cameras.

Dont fully believe your first part of your statement "if you cant reverse with out a camera you should not be driving the vehicle in the first place" I have never used one of these cameras and I would imagine that they would make it a bit easier for seeing what's directly behind you, there fore hope fully saving a life but I fully agree with your in putting kids in the car first and yes I think there a lot of people who cannot judge there vehicle properly using mirrors and in my opinion the mirrors on the left hand side convex (I think thats what there called) are the biggest danger they put on a vehicle as a guide for reversing. You show me a semi that has these fitted to there vehicle for reversing, yes they do have one but usually only a spot mirror for changing lanes but they do not use these for reversing, a little off subject I know but it all contributes. regards Steve M

sandmanvanman (not really an original screen name)

I believe you are demonstrating your ignorance of the situation mate.

You don't only need to be aware of your own kids location, but that of any others in the vicinity. Adults as well.

Reversing cameras are a practical method of ASSISTING the driver of any vehicle whilst reversing.
Just as an audible alarm fitted to ANY truck is used to alert people they are reversing.

It is as simple as that.

the name is as original as it gets , i own one yes. a genuine holden sandman panelvan, have done since i was 17 and i dont need a reversing camera to get it out and about. . and im sorry i should have said put your kids in your car before reversing and look out for other kids and adults, family dog , other cars ,bikes etc. but i thought this went with out saying. as you should have been taught this when you got your licence. the only thing that has changed for most drivers is they didnt have kids when they got there licence so it wasnt mentioned after all more kids get runover than adults. sounds like you are a bit peeved about a similer log in., so you just had to spit hairs. ohh didums, dry your eye princess you are straining them looking at that 4 inch screen for your reversing camera. and by the way i am not beeing ignorent one of your lovely reversing cameras has recently cost a friend his car when a trusting driver was too busy looking at the video screen and reversed in to a 70 km zone ,smack..

I can see by your inarticulate reply that you are somewhat limited in logical thought.

You have owned the panelvan since you were 17.

Have you reached the age of 18 yet?

Hi,

I have a camera on my 4wd however this will only help and not prevent accidents....in the end it is still down to the vehicle operator to be aware!.... I agree with extfilm - eye contact and acknowledgement is the only way to be sure...although with the kids I just confirm where they are playing at the time and try to make sure I can see them while I reverse the car...otherwise I say to the wife "watch the kids for a minute luv"
