The very simple answer to this question is: the Diamantina Shire (of which Birdsville, Betoota and Bedourie are the towns) is the second largest shire in Queensland has Channel 8 linked throughout the Shire to enable those of us who live and work in the area to have a facilitiy whereby when travelling or working in some areas, e.g. going Birdsville to Windorah - there are long stetches or road, not much civilisation, no digital or CDMA phone - and by having these linked repeater there is a chance someone will hear you calling for help, if needed.
This means (and explains why there are signs at the entrances to the Shire) and why people are asked NOT to use Ch 8 or 38 unless in an emergency.
Chs 8 and 38 are monitored by the Clinics, Police and most people living in the area but there have been many instances when we in Birdsville have Ch 8/38 jammed by people using these channels whilst travelling from just north of Innamincka all the way into Birdsville - talking non-stop and unable to be interrupted. That was the most recent one.
It also means that the entire Shire is able to listen to running commentary and dull drivel and personal information like how many times people stop to pee between Boulia and Bedourie etc. and so on.
Very frustrating when out in the Ambulance heading to a call out and unable to contact needed people - having to resort to using the Sat phone at great cost instead of UHF.
Hello Doug and Dusty - hope you are both well. Very cold here this a.m. - nice days and getting ready for the Races.

Hi Ruth,
Thanks for your hospitality and advice. Walkers Crossing was a breeze, as was the Bore Track.
You have the BEST showers and the softest water. (I'm from Adelaide), and thanks for those great Cuppachino's!!!
Take care,

If this is intended as an emergency / urgency channel rather than a general chat channel would it not have been much more sensible to have used (change to?) UHF CB Channel 5 which is recognised throughout Australia as the emergency channel?

In fact the Radiocommunications Act makes it illegal to use Channel 5 for anything other than emergencies.

Sir Greendog, you will need to find another channel to talk to your brother on - with UHF you may not use channels 1 to 8 or 31 to 38 because they are Repeater channels, you speak on Ch 1 - 8 and they are transmitted out/back on 31 - 38, therefore you must choose something in between. Ch 18 is preferred for caravans, Ch 10 for Simpson Desert, Ch 40 is the open channel on most roads (but not for chit chat), so you could use say Ch 12 for your chit-chat.
Ch 8 is used here in this Shire so people who live and work (that is musterers on large properties can be in contact at all times). As pointed out before the signs at the entrances to the Shire ask that Visitors use Ch 8/38 ONLY as an EMERGENCY.

After the useful information confirmed by Ruth in this post I have updated the Preparation section of all trek notes on ExplorOz that start or end in Birdsville with a specific mention that Channels 8 and 38 should not be used unless in an emergency. Thanks!
