Hi All
Has anyone found any reliability problems with 1hd-FTE Turbo Diesel? What engine oil should be used?
Cheers

Hi Max & Sue. Have an 05 model and not a hint of a problem. Very happy you might say. I run Rimula Super and change oil & filter at 5K intervals. Gives 13's to 100ks fairly consistently and that's at 3 to 3.3 tonne with r/rack. Would like some taller gearing though!!

Hi Max and Sue,
We have that motor in our 2001 GXL. Also use Penrite. Has done 80K, with about half out in the bush. Did the Anne Beadell Hwy in 2005. Has been a great motor. does about 12-13 L/100Km around the city and at 110km/h with the roof rack on. Same speed, no roof rack and it does about 10.
Regards,
Jim

Hi Max,
ABH was a great trip, but beware the damage to shockers. The main trick is to keep a speed that is comfortable on the corrugations, about 40km/h for a cruiser, maybe a bit less. Some spots between Emu and the
Dog Fence are 1st gear and idle along, but not much of that. You need about 25 psi in the front and 35 psi in the back but this will vary according to your overall load. Small sharp Mulga spikes are a
hazard as are the odd rock hidden in the sand. We camped at the old Lake Yeo
homestead (good
water in the
well),
Neale junction,
Ilkurlka roadhouse (hot shower and fuel),
Serpentine lakes (east side overlooking the lakes), Vokes
Hill Corner, and a spot about 20 kms east of Emu Claypan. All good and plenty of other sites including some set up by WA National Parks with
water tanks, although I never rely on them. Lots of fallen timber for campfires. Overall a fantastic desert trek that will get harder as the track is more travelled and becomes more corrugated. Definitely take spare shocks and tyre gear.
Have fun,
Jim

Just ordered a new 2006 RV to replace my 2003 RV this will be my 4th Troopy.
Brilliant vehicle and no issues with 4.2 TD at all.
I run Castrol RX Super in
mine no problems at all.
Fuel consumption as around the same as stated above by others.
Strong head wind will increase fuel consumption as the Troopy has the aerodynamics of a brick.
Are you buying one or do you have issues with yours???
Cheers

Hi John
Thanks for your reply. We ordered a RV Troopy TD 4 weeks ago. Another 4 weeks to delivery. We have had two other naturally aspirated Troopys. I was worried about the hi tech side of this model. Any problems with the electronic modules. We do get into pretty remote areas and reliability is a big issue with us.
Cheers

Mine has performed faultlessly, the electronics side of any modern engine can be a problem regardless of brand but I have not heard of anyone with issues related to electronics on the 4.2 TD.
I have taken
mine to some pretty remote
places also and done so without hesitation.
Also remember that this engine is the same as the one on the 100 series so plenty of them out there.
If there was any issues then it would have been mentioned by now.
Cheers

Hi-jack warning-
You 2 should have waited for the V8 to be released March next year!!! I know I will be. RV Troopys in stock at at least two dealers on my way north??? Unless you ordered factory lockers or something can't see why you would need to wait?? 1Hz out of production, current TD to finish up end of year-Facts.

Hi Max & Sue,
I actually own a 2006 model 78 Series with the factory turbo diesel, 1HD-FTE.
It goes like sheite off a shovel, just like its ancestors and no, I've had absolutely no trouble with it whatsoever!
Not sure exactly what oil is in it beyond Shell as my mate
services it. I'll ask him on Tuesday when he does the 15,000 k change.
Yes, I do change my oil every 5,000 k. Why? Oil is cheap! I've always changed my diesel Landcruiser oil every 5,000 k's and probably always will. Funny thing, they've all
well and truly passed the magic 300,000 mark without incident.
Geoff.

98,000km on my 2002 1HD-FTE.
Only issue was the EGR valves can malfunction causing carbon buildup in the intake and in the cat converter. Easily prevented by disabling it.
The electronics are typically Toyota - no hassles unless someone fiddles with them.
But if you fit an aftermarket dual battery tray, you have to move one of the black boxes - make sure it is
well earthed otherwise the ECU can fail - that warning will come with the instructions on the dual battery tray.
Any 15W40 diesel engine oil is fine.
You'll enjoy the vehicle. I believe its a better option than waiting for the new model next year, which will take some years to sort out.
Cheers
Phil
