Just did a couple of searches "Southern Cross Roof Bag".....got over 8000 hits. Then refined it to "Southern Cross" and still got 4520 hits.

So, given that I'm not in the mood to look through THAT many old posts, I thought I'd take the easy option and ask the gallery.

I'm looking for a new roof bag to replace my existing (7 year old) Bushranger......it's a really good water collector. Have checked out the Southern Cross web site and their biggest bag (1500 x 1200) looks like being the goods to hold 3 swags (and to keep them dry). This last bit is the BIGGY......are the Southern Cross roof bags water proof? Any first hand knowledge would be appreciated.

Thanks

Roachie

Roachie,

Don't know about Southern cross but about eight years ago I bought a bag made out of the vinyl used on the big semis with the Tautliner soft sides. It has never leaked a drop and it has been in some torrential queensland downpours.

Got it from Roof Rack City Gilbert st. Adelaide.

I've got one of the black vinyl jobs from Roof Rack City too. I have had it for a couple of years and it does not leak except if you accidently spill pooled water in when opening it after rain or in the morning after a heavy dew. And it opens on three sides (see below). I think that it is a Candy Canvas product.

Hold the phone on the water proof.

My SC tent is back for warranty at moment as it leaked like there was no roof on it 3 times this year. Lent to mate to go down south with, he called me first morning after the night was bucketin down, they were Drowned... They suffered 3 days and gave up.

they took back to SC who said it had never been wet down (manure it had heaps of times).... mate left in back yard for 3-4 mths while it p'ed with rain, and it still leaked.

took back last week, they are 'going to set it up in our yard and see what happens'.. doesnt help when theres 0 rain about..

but Im less than impressed, it never leaked on us, but it sat in the spare room for 6odd mths without use, which even in their words should not have mattered.

So, we shall see.

What a PITA mate,......still, it seems as though yours might be exception and not the rule; most ppl seem to be happy with their SC gear.

Thanks for offer mate, but I'll probably keep it for the lid of the camper trailer to store stuff that isn't so 'important' to keep dry.

I have a Southern Cross Roof Bag a SC Ultimate Trekker Tent and 2 SC Swags (1 Single & 1 Double)
If you have not gathered I happen to like their products.

My roof bag has been spot on with no water ingress. (Same for all the rest of the stuff)

Cheers

I found a SC roof bag for sale recently and almost bought it, until I realised that it only opened on 2 sides!

Makes putting stuff in very hard, especially when it is on the roof and your stuff and you are on the ground!

Thanks Jo,

I pack all my stuff from the rear step of the patrol anyway, so the 2 sides opening would be okay for my purposes.

Bill,

Don't have any info for you on the SC bag but I have seen the ones from Roof Rack World (Gepps Cross) at the 4WD shows. Made in SA too.

Looks like plenty of sizes to choose from too.

Been excellent.

Have you considered a Michelles Sacs RacSac?? I purchased one at the end of last year and have been VERY impressed. It has heavy duty floor material to prevent rubbing through, zips and velcro around 3 opening sides, straps that wrap around the whole bag, and is 100% dust and waterproof!! Mine is 1200 x 1200 (I think), and the amount of gear I fitted into it was unbelievable.

Roachie
have one and use occaisionally on 100 series with arb mesh rack with solid base about 1 foot deep at front of rack.
has been great and never let water in until last trip. sat on roof in sydney for 2 days with little bit of rain then drove to melb and it rained whole way. didnt unpack straight away but cple days later unpacked and the front was wet inside-the bit that was sitting against solid base of rack-the rest of bag was dry-the part against the mesh. roof bag is roughly 4-5 yrs on.
when purchased i wet it in bath a few times.
would certainly recommend and if ever need another will get same.
i dont put tarp between bag and bottom of rack so am getting bit of rubbing on roofback but not enough to concern me yet.
ps have one of their tents 10X10 and about same age-has slight leak on back of canvas last outing when rained-yet to determine if it was me touching side of tent when wet(maybe stumbled against side and touched after cple to many)
again would highly recommend
cheers

Thanks fozzy,

I have the same sort of rack, about 2.1m long. I don't tend to pack the bag towards the front....access it from the back step. I'm looking at one around 1.8m long as i have my air horns (300mm long) mounted up the front too, so they take up that front section on one side and i can add other stuff (eg gas bottle or box for oils etc) along that front edge.

Hi Roachie,

Halls Canvas Goods at Hackham would probably make you up a bag out of whatever material you prefer and whatever size you want. Might be worth a phone call (08)8384 3117

Thanks Phil,

I just phoned the lady there and have now placed an order. They will make to order for around the same price as the SC type, but height can be up to 450mm.....I've gone for 400H x 1800L x 1200W for $345-.

Cheers

Hi Roachie,

Good stuff. That lady (Mrs Hall!!!) knows her stuff. They are a family company who have been around a long time.
I have used one of their Breezeway tents for the past 14 years, and its never leaked, and not a stitch out of place. Also bought lots of other stuff off them.

Cheers

Hi Roachie,
I have a SC Roof Pack bag, about 9 years old. It is great if you stick to the black stuff.
When in the real fine dust, the zips leak in all the dust, so I make sure that I only pack goods that dust will not damage at the back of the bag. As to water, well that is a real down side. I have been caught out 2 times (both Simpson Trips) when the Heavens opened up all Night, I mean real heavy rain. How the hell water gets in, I would love to know. When we set up camp early for the next few days, it was everything out of the Pack Bag to dry everything out.
Having said all that, pack bags are great and I would not be without one.

Thanks Stephen,
As you might see elsewhere on here, I've decided to opt for a local (Adelaide) maker as they do good work. They also make to order, so I'll be phoning again tomorrow with EXACT measurements including the curve of the corners of the rack (they asked me to trace the curvature and FAX it to them!!). So the precise measurements will be 1700 x 1250 x 400

Cheers

Roachie,
Give a canvas maker a go, they will provide better canvas and more important, custom made to your size, they'll cost less as well.
I got mine from Bradey, Brew bought one from a canvas place down south, name ?,
same canvas anyway.
