There was some discussion a while back on how we 4WD'ers and campers enjoy being out under the stars, & sitting around a campfire while yakking to friends whilst sipping from a bottle of your favourite.

Well - "stars" are going to be the central theme for us this weekend. We're off to Megellan Observatory at Lake Bathurst, in the Southern Highlands/Central Tablelands area 200km south of Sydney. The observatory is set on 120 acres of private land at 780 metres in altitude. Accommodation is available in the form of a fully-equipped 3-bedroom house all to yourselves. Linen is provided, all you need to bring is food and grog. Prices are very reasonable - starting at $170 for a couple for two nights.

The clear winter skies should give a nice clear window to the stars here, and the observatory is equipped with a number of different telescopes to look through. You can also hire CCD cameras to take snaps of whatever you see. Very cool indeed! Even during the day you can look at the sun's corona through their solar scope. Zane, the owner, conducts "sky tours" for a nominal fee.

We'll let you know what it was like when we get back, for those that are interested. I can't wait! If it's all pretty cool, I'll get a nice refractor for Omaroo.

Here's the website:

Cheers
Chris

That does look nice. The price for hiring some pretty nice gear looked good to.

Now I have to go there as well. The list of places to visit just gets longer.

LOL!! Hey Ray... is that Jim Lovell? Didn't he get a lift back in 1970? At least they left the can behind! That newspaper must be getting a bit boring by now though.....

Hey Chris,

How many bottles of that $1.99 Cab-Merlot are you taking???

Sounds like a good gig mate.

I have visited the Stockwell Observatory in Adelaide's Barossa region and got a bit of a buzz from the experience.

Hey there Sandy :)

Yup - I have a case in the car ready to roll. There are four of us, and the astronomer - so that's about right.

I might take a reserve though.... just "in case".... (terrible attempt at droll humour.....)

LOL!

Just made it back. What a top weekend.

Zane Hammond, the owner, is one of the nicest blokes you'll meet. He's an avid amateur astronomer who is trying to make it a professional operation.

We stayed up until 3:00am both Friday and last night to see some of the most amazing nebulae, planets and stars. The moon wasn't up so we didn't get to have a good look at that.

This has turned out to be a very expensive weekend as I couldn't resist buying one of his scopes - a Meade 10" LX200GPS. I'll use it on Omaroo on top of the hill to view the Moon - which is my real interest.

A GREAT weekend!! Highly recommended.
