Hi,
This winter we're doing the CSR, travelling to
Wiluna via the Anne
Beadell Highway, and to get from
Sydney to
Coober Pedy we'll travel
to
Broken Hill, through the
Flinders Ranges up to Arkaroola and then
Lyndhurst etc to CP.
But what's the best way from B
Hill to (south)
Flinders Ranges, say
somewhere near
Wilpena Pound ?
My maps suggest we could go WSW from B
Hill for about 50km, turn
North at
Cockburn, thence Mulyungarie, Benagerie, Frome Downs,
Curnamona and then probably Erudina, Martins Wells and Ulowdna
(spelling?) about 20km south of
Wilpena Pound.
What recommendations might someone have for us? We don't need a bone-jarring route, the ABH and CSR will provide more than enough of that.
Thanks in advance,
DickyBeach

DickyBeach,
There is NO access along the route you are suggesting as it crosses station properties who have forbidden access through their properties. The best way is through
Yunta and then 300km to Arkaroola. This is not a very exciting route until you get to the
Gammon Ranges. There are however some abandoned Gold diggings at
Waukaringa, 45km north of
Yunta that beg to be explored. You could also take some back roads from
Yunta to
Hawker which is 54km south of Wilpena. All these are public access roads, not rough and quite interesting. Cheers,W

Thanks Willem,
Other people have also recommended
Yunta, and I've since had other people recommend the
Yunta to
Hawker route you refer to. Will do.

DickyBeach, I neglected to say that the road access is only closed as far as the
western boundary of Frome Downs heading west. From Frome Downs through to Martins
Well and beyond is Public Access Road. Cheers, W

DickyBeach, Hi, please excuse late response to this thread, been at State 4WD AGM. This is my backyard. If you have Oziexplorer I can e-mail you the track file (.PLT)
Yunta to Rawnsley via the backroads, it is an interestiung drive as long as it is dry. Let me know

Kezza,
Hi, No info on Simpson. From
Innamincka take Old Strez Track South to Merty Merty. Interesting drive and avoids most of the oil wells etc. Join main track. Good camping at crossing. Further South at
Montecollina Bore (hot) National Parks have
camp site in dunes; I always stay there.
26kms further south turn left for
Moolawatana. This track skirts around Northern Flinders to
Balcanoona and Gammons NP. Fuel available at Arkarooola. Continue south to Wearing
Gorge and Blinmaan. Good camping at Chambers
Gorge. In Flinder NP there are now 4WD sprecific
camp grounds at Brachina and Bunyeroo. Very
well done. Whilst Wilpena offers full camping facilities I prefer
Rawnsley Park 20kms south. Choice of power on non powered sites in bush. Good sunset
views of Pound wall.
I hope that is of use.
regards
Mike
