It's looking like I am heading off again. Although this trip I have to start at
Katherine and am wondering which will be the quickest route from
Sydney to
Katherine?

if it's a lets stick to tar trip then I did three ways to mt isa,
winton,
longreach,
charleville,
st george,
cunnamulla,
bourke,
nyngan,dubbo,
katoomba,penrith,
sydney. or
Stick to the speed unlimited state and
Tennant creek,
alice springs,
coober pedy and across the flinders to
broken hill ,
nyngan,dubbo,and on to
sydney.

According to Travelmate the best/shortest route is north to
singleton, willowtree, turnoff to Narrabri, Moree, Mungindi,
St George,
Morven,
cloncurry, Barkly hwy to Three Ways and then up the Stuart, 3,603 k's and 43 hours to drive it.

Yep,
I have to agree with travel mate. I lived in
St George for 18 years and now live in
Sydney. I've found that that way is the quickest. From St.George I'd head to
Mitchell via the
Mitchell hwy then across to
Charleville then up through
Augathella to
Winton etc.
It's been a few years since I have travelled the
Mitchell but they have spent a fair bit of time improving it. It used to have an unsealed section from reports it's now sealed.

From memory, I tihkn your way gives more kms with the 110km/hr speed limit.

To go via Gundi, it would add a few hours to the trip at least. The 110km/hr area is between Narrabri and Moree. But you can sit on 110km/hr for most of the trip from Willow Tree onwards. I usuall speak to the truckies on the radio to find out where the revenue raisers are hiding. From
Sydney to St. Geaorge it's about an 11 hour drive by myself stopping only for the occasional feed. From Liverpool to the main drag in St. George its 983 km, the longest part of the trip is getting to
Singleton. I found the
putty road to be a great road with limited traffic but once you get stuck behind a slower vehicle you have limited overtaking opportunities. I now do the M5, M7, M2, Pennent Hills Rd, F3 then go via Freeman
Waterhole to
Singleton. It's about the same in time but can belittle bit congested.

quick distance chart shows 3666k. 120kph for 10hrs ea day. I did Syd/Humpty Doo (solo) in 4 1/2 days, av 95kph. Shocking "bitchumen" roads in Wstn Qld Via
Cunnamulla. Returned via St Gge,
Guyra to Nambucca. I almost had a good bruise on my left leg from the steering wheel on the way up there (straight road steering).
Difference via Broken H or via
Nyngan is about 100kl, giv or take (timewise ?), take some reading material and good musac. "Get ya motor running, head out on the hyway, looking for adventure or whatever...............floats your bus.......

Like Peter 2 I use Travelmate for stuff like this. It used to be pretty
well spot on for travel times but it seems to have changed. Distances are still very accurate.
I used travelmate ot plan a trip from
Broken Hill to
Ballina in January. It is worth playing with a bit, you can put in to travel via different
places and also quickest route or shortest route. I found it worth playing with.
Anyway for our trip in Jan Travelmate suggested 22 hours travel time we did it in 16. We were
well organised and had 2 drivers but we did stick pretty
well to the speed limits and it was a very hot day. My point is that if it says 43 hours then you will probalby manage it in 30 or there abouts.

Putty Rd down your end but you don't need that so the fastest route is
Bathurst,

Go to Mascot in
sydney, board qantas plane to
darwin, according to Travelmate it is 458.57km to
katherine so you could drive it in 4-5 hours or there might be a flight to do it in 1, either way it shouldn't be more than a day trip.
