Had the maps out last night planning next years trip. Not having been to Central Oz, it must be time. Looking at coming in from the East via the Plenty Hwy- checking out the East Ranges on the way in. Check out Alice, then the West ranges- leaving via Finke. If time permits, across the Simpson and home to
Sydney.
OK- what are the 'must not miss' features in the area.
Been to olgas & ayers pebble area after our Gunbarrel trip!

Bad?????
You do get some soft stuff this time of year but letting your tyres down a bit will fix that.
What sort of car were they in?

The Old Ghan track to Finke is
well worth it.
Not too many people seem to use it but it travels through some spectacular country

Re the East Macs - we had a great couple of nights
camping at Paddy's
Rock hole near Arltunga - lovely countryside for a relaxing
camp and a few walks (bit of panning for gold flecks too).Ruby gap is nearby but homework on entering that area needs to be done.
Re the West Macs -
where to start ?
Palm Valley is top shelf - 3 gazetted walks - all good (the Mpara walk is a standout - the
views on the back section are excellent). Kings Canyon - the
rim walk - was bloody amazing (if you are into appreciating nature !). Goss's
bluff was worth a stop (you can drive into the meteorite crater) - the adjacent highway (might be the Namatjira drive) from the Alice takes you past a succession of Gorges - Ormiston etc - those closest to the Alice can be a bit conjested with tourists -
the gorge behind
Glen Helen lodge is said to be great.....
camping there too. A few of my better photos from that area are on my site gallery...

I agree, the wildlife
park is a must for an all day visit. The truck museum and reptile display are good value. We were in Alice last year and spent 6 weeks in the town and mostly out east. Need to go back to complete. There are some good parks & wildlife
camp sites to the east, $4 per night. There are
toilets and
water if you need them.
Did do a day trip to
palm valley and worth it.

As others have said,
Palm Valley, Finke Gorge is a must.
Also the other way from Alice (North East) is Arltunga gold
mine ghost town & Ruby Gorge these are very pretty
places, as are N'darla Gorge and
Trephina Gorge.
Alice is a wonderful area. We spent 2 weeks just around Alice. Gemtree is also a great place to dig for Gem's.
If you have time you may want to do the Larapinta Loop to Kings Canyon. If continuing to Uluru you just gotta stop at
Curtin Springs road house for a drink & its far cheaper than the Uluru resort.
Excuse spelling if wrong.
There is just soooo much to see and do in the area.
Enjoy it, it's wonderful.

Break the journey across the Plenty at Tobermary station. They have great green grass and decent facilities. The last time I was there the "old lady" (who had more energy than I ) in the
shop was great value. There wasn't much in the area she couldn't tell you about.

Panarama Guth,
Art Gallery is a must do. I'm not usually an
art gallery person but I spend almost 4 hours wandering around in their. The local artists are really amazing.

Think most of the above has it covered in the "what to see" department. My advice would be Alice is lovely, but try to steer clear of the
Todd River after dark. The rest of the town is great.

How far from the east are you coming from....using donohue hwy at all from
Boulia???
Did this in Aug/Sept this year.....donohue was rugged riding and camped on Georgina River....beautiful
swimming hole but cannt guarrentee
water there!!
Fueled up at
Tobermorey Station (also manage linda station) then camped at
jervois station ($2 shower)
Plenty hwy pretty good riding along but very sandy for long sections....
Had lunch at
Atitjere community just as
shop was shutting....miss it and you dont miss out, go there and it doesnt really matter....
very long drive through
cattlewater pass through Amblindum station into Altunga but very nice scenery.....not suppose to
camp where we did on the way up the
government works at altunga but we had no choice - time of day and hole in bucky's fuel tank.....
drive into alice nice tis way...didnt stop at emily and jesse gaps but they are right on the side of the road.......
in one day we did -
anzac hill, gives a nice view of the town....
simpsons gap and
standley chasm...also stopped in at the sultural museum but didnt hang around for long....whitees runnin blak peoples business and the attitude was rotten towards the locals.....
camped at
redbank gorge....drove to gosse
bluff...great view from
tylers pass....
palm valley beautiful but long drive in....hermannsberg is a rotten dump - rubbish everywhere but the lady in the
shop ("whitee") was so happy t see nathan and then so sad to see us go....i guess needed some one to talk to.....
road down to mt dare from finke is bad...really bad.....but Ian and the guys at the hotel have THE hottest sausage rolls in the world and its so worth the trip!!!
mt dare to dalhousie bad riding again but its worth it....just dose up the aeroguard if the mozzies bother you!!!they ate our eldest daughter to pieces and left scars for over a week!!!
didnt do the simpson from here....wish we had...did the ood track instead!!! or should i say the ood hwy!!!
check out my trip report if you want....just look for "tookadive" in the search section and it should be there.....very long but there should be more info there that could help ya.....
Good luck...when you going????
