Hi all,

I have just had the pleasure of having to replace my windscreen wiper mechanism in my Triton. The cause of the replacement was hitting an owl at about 100Ks.
The cost of the repair was around $450.00, talk about an expensive owl.
I actually hit it about 2 months ago but with no rain about put it off for a while.

Cheers Kev

No I was in QLD at the time and had to remove one very dead owl from being tangled in my roof rack

LOL HJ60, but don't you know that the forum nazis are on patrol? Posting frivolous, negative replies is frowned upon!

Kev M, I had an owl crash into my driver's door window going up the 'big hill' from Kempsey to Armidale. It freaked me out and nearly lost it on that skinny road (wet at the time). No damage though, so that owl went 'cheep'.

Not necessarily frivolous!
We were only talking about WIRES last weekend on the way home from Crooked River, they have signs with phone numbers to call, in areas with absolutely no mobile signal whatsoever.
Maybe HJ60-2H was interested to know of WIRES response, as I would be & would like hear from anybody that has called WIRES.

As for 'Forum Nazi', I have twice had to stop & put some callous b@stards road hit out of it's agony! I can't understand how anybody could hit an animal & leave it with compound fractures & broken bones protruding through it's skin & leave it writhing in agony ...... I can only hope & pray that there is such a thing as karma.

Hi Shaker,
I assumed (perhaps wrongly) that HJ60-2H was being jovial with reference to a current post about the RACV and injured animals. My reply was taking that a step further with reference to another current post.

I have dealt with WIRES before; a fantailed cuckoo had flown into our window at home. I was given the name, address and ph. no. of someone who could help. We took the dazed bird to see this person who had a good look at it and declared it OK and that it just needed some time. He said to take it home and keep it in the box we had it in to help keep it calm and see how it was in the morning; any problems bring it back. The bird flew off the next day. I got the impression that if there was injury he would have kept it at his place.

I've put my fair share of wildlife out of their misery. The number of snakes I've seen run over and left to die is saddening. I Know sometimes they are hard to see, but I believe quite a few people 'don't mind' running over a snake...

Yes I was being half frivilous but at the same time I wonder what the WIRES respnse would be if you were way out back somewhere and had a roo or bird with broken bones and slowly dying> Would they recommend that you knock it on the head??

Maybe I shodl cal them so I know for when it happens next.

Is it worth the hassel, most of the time it would be easier to knock the on the head and get on with your travels. I doubt Wires or anyone else for that matter would want to travel to some remote location to clooect an injured animal that has little hope of recovery.
I've hit quite a few roos in my time and have had some with joey's in the pouch, move the mum off the roadway and dropped the joey off the the next cop shop or town vet for them to deal with. Although some just knock the joey on the head as they couldn't be bothered caring for something considered a pest in some parts.

I think you're right fellas; WIRES etc is only an option if you are near a major centre and even then there's a difference between an animal with a minor injury that can be returned to the wild on recovery, and an animal that may not recover from injuries and/or survive in the wild

I was travelling from Mildura to Broken Hill some time ago and about 15 Kms out of Wentworth and came across a Wedgie that had been hit by a car and had a broken wing that I could see. probably internal injuries as well but it was trying to move.
My mobile was a bit flat unfortunately.
I was very wary of the Wedgies talons and beak, so broke a few saltbushes of and put them around it to give it some shade as it was going to be a hot day.
I drove back to Wentworth to make a call to WIRES.
Thought there might be a local branch near Wentworth/Mildura.
Got connected to Sydney.
Wha's the problem she asked.
I told her.
Where is it again she said
Silver City Highway 15 Kms from Wentworth.
What's the nearest town she said.
Wentworth !!!!!!!!!!
Where is that she said.
Near Mildura says I.
Well that's Victoria, you will have to ring the Victorian organisation.
I said that I was in NSW. On the northern side of the Murray River.
Well, she said, you will have to ring our Albury branch, they might be able to help.
I got up off the floor and asked her if she has ever studied a map of NSW while she is sipping her coffee..
I rang RRANA in Broken Hill and a guy drove 260 Kms to pick up the bird.

Geez Kev, I hope $450 included a new motor... I think I would rather get a generic replacement from Kmart and make the bugger fit...

Blue,

It included everything. Motor, wiper arms etc plus fitting. I destroyed the motor by still using the wipers after I hit the owl as I was about 2 hours from any where in light rain at about 4 in the morning.

It's still an expense that I wish I didn't have to spend though.

I know what you mean Kev, you have a new UHF/spotties/etc tied up in a collision with an owl... At least you didn't do a windscreen as well... Just thinking it might have been cheaper if the winda broke, you wouldn't have tried to use the wipers then...lol

Yeah I would have put the drizabone and ski goggles on and kept going if the windscreen was smashed.
It scared the absolute bleep out of me when it hit as it appeared from no where and deflected of the snorkel straight on to the wiper assembly.
My luck with feathered creatures is getting worse as at christmas last year I collected about 10 Galahs and smashed 1 head light cover and 1 spot light cover.
I now have to agree that when you cook Galah place a rock in with it and when the rock is tender throw the galah out and eat the rock LOL

cheers Kev
