4.5kg LPG Bottles

Just a quick question.
Do I buy 2 4.5kg gas bottles or do I just do the exchange thing through the servos. Whats a better option. I currently have a 2.5kg, 3.0kg and a 9 kg gas bottle but have 4.5kg bottle holders on the trailer for trips.
Any ideas

Kev,i just exchange at the servo & if need be refill the servo one's when servo not available.:o)))

Just out of interest whats the current exchange cost in comparison to getting one filled.
Is it cheaper to exchange or just refill??

Kev the exchange rate is about $33 for the 8.5 kg bottle.I find it more convenient than trying to find a refiller.:o)))

Problem with the servo exchange is price and size of the bottle ,not all 4.5 bottles are the same size so lots wont fit your specific holders , price varies considerably , have found that
camping shops are generally cheaper for a refill than servos ,get our 4.5kg bottles filled for $9 ea at B.C.F store compared to $15 at local servo.

Thanks for that I hadn't thought about them comming in different sizes. I think I will just buy 2 that will fit and refill them when needed.
Any ideas on where the cheapest place to buy them in SW

Yo troops,
I agree that the way to go is have your own 4.5kg's however I found at - of
all places -
EMERALD - no one knew where you could get a refill - they all did exchanges on the 9kgs only. We had to wait until we got further west before we were able to fill the empty..
Grrr!!!

I carry 2 @ 4.5 KG (on CT for stove and HWS)) and 2 @ 1.25 (for BBQ and single burner for the billy on the road). We get them all filled as required (ie no swaps). The advantage of 2 the same size is that once one is empty, you swap to the full one and refill at the next opportunity. We don't run a gas fridge, so anytime over the next couple of weeks is fine. Never had a problem getting fills.

Thats pretty close to what we do ,3x 4.5 on C/T , 1 for stove ,1 for hws and 1 "spare" that is occasionaly used if we set up the bbq when/if no open fires allowed ,never yet run out of gas using the 3 bottle system.

That's what my thoughts are also. I want 2 @ 4.5kg so that when 1 runs out I know that I have to get it refilled at the next convenient opportunity but still have gas to run the stove etc.
It seems that to own your own bottles is still the way to go.

If you buy your own bottles, there is another advantage.
Both the 4.5kg and 9kg sizes bottles are available with built-in gauges, consisting of an internal float and external gauge, so you know at a glance how much gas in them.

some here wanted to know a cheap place to buy gas bottle
aldi have them pretty cheap at the moment but they dont last long before there all gone
i fill all my own bottles from servo from gas pump with my own made up lead have done so for many years with out any problems
its quick and cheap BUT! i try not let them see what im doing i dont think they like it
it cost me under 9 dollars to fill 9kg bottle
