Hi all again - I have a HJ61 Landcruiser The rear carpet which is fixed & is part of the back of the rear seats has had diesel fuel spilt on the carpet. Does anyone know how to get this stain & smell out? Carpet can't be removed from vehicle. Thanks. GrahamL.

Hi GrahamL,
Sorry I can't help wiht the 12HT not shutting down, but carpet cleaning I can.
Glycerol is the wonder product.
Find someone that makes BioDiesel and ask nicely if they will give you some of their Glycerol, which is a by product of making BioDiesel. They'll probably happily give you a 25 litre drum. It's black and smells not so great, but a bit on a rag, or once you get game, just pour it on, rub it in, wipe it off with water and rinse, and any oil based stain will come out. If I had spilt diesel on those back carpets in my HJ61, I'd be reaching for the glycerol.
I've cleaned salmon pink carpets, light
grey carpets, my cream leather lounge and anything else I can think of, including degreasing the engine, garage floor and hand cleaning. Wonderful stuff. Biodegradable, nothing toxic in it, reusing a waste product. Only good for oil based stains, not fruit etc.
If you can't get any Glycerol/BioD in
Tom Price, I'm sure you can remove those back seats - the backrests right? I'd try detergent and a good spray from the hose once you've pulled them out of the car.
All the best
Tim

Thanks Tim. I'll try to get my hands on some Glycerol, sounds like good stuff to have around anyway! I'm going to give the bicarb of soda a go too, in case I can't get the Glycerol... I'll leave taking the seats out till last resort! The diesel has soaked all through the thick underlay as
well. Not sure if the underlay will come out with the carpet or not yet..
Cheers, Graham

Graham,
Tim's idea with the glycerol sounds good, but I've also found that citrus based cleaning stuff very good for getting diesel fuel ( or any grease for that matter) out and getting rid of the smell.
It's available in most supermarkets, smells of oranges and lemons. Can't remember the name of it though.
Bicarbonate of Soda is also good for getting rid of smells.

My recollection is that theres some quite thick underfelt under the carpet on the HJ61, so I don't think anything will work without removing the carpet. I wash oily stuff in Dynamo in the Laundry tub (don't tell my wife).
But if you are to leave the carpet in there, then a cleaner will make the surface look better, and time will fix the diesel smell.

Thanks Phil... wife said no go with the Dynamo!! (Good idea tho mate) But I'm giving Bicarb a go both on the carpet & on the underlay so I'll see how that goes. Might have to have a go at getting the seats out & putting the whole lot in the yard & giving it a wash with some carpet shampoo or something... sounds too hard for today tho !
Cheers, Graham.
