Well , my wife got a job as a GP at
Kakadu Health
Services and we leave
Scone around the 5th March. She will fly up and I will drive the Troopy and take the boat and two dogs.
I'll be going via Moree,
Mitchell,
Blackall,
Winton, etc, Its about 3800Km.
Any suggestions about the trip please let me know.
If you are around
Jabiru after the middle of march or so drop in for a beer or coffee.
Hopefully I will find a job in the area as
well.
Slamin Sam, sorry it wasn't the Burg.
Regards Boo Boo

My son was a chef there in 1990. After a few strange comments from him we went for a visit in '91.
It only took a few days to realize the challenges he faced, particularly with say food supplies, getting his 4wd serviced, general cost of things, his job there (at that time) had very limited tenure.
To his credit, he did last near on 2 years.
Probably (and certainly hopefully) that has all changed now.
Why not go Moree, St.George,
Bollon, Thargominda,
Eromanga,
Jundah.
Winton etc. All good roads now and much distance saved

I did a bit of contract work on the
Ranger Mine out there, circa 1980.
Jabiru was then just a fledgling
mine compound.
It's a nice area but a tad hottet than
Darwin. Still there is lots to see and do and if you are in to fishing then there is lots of opportunities. Winters can gewt quite cool...down to 5C.
Just watch out for them big geckos wot live in the rivers near the popular fishing spots....:-)
You should be able to pick up a job at the
mine.
I was going to suggest a trip via
Borroloola but the rivers and creeks will still be up after the wet so you had better stick to the black stuff. There are lots of historic pubs along the way.
Enjoy
Cheers

Thanks for the five degrees. We were going to leave almost all our winter gear at
home.
I think its my stupid great dane that will have to watch the geckos. It thinks every thing is its friend.
I'll have a look
Borroloola in the dry season.
Going to
check out a few pubs on the way. Including the one at
Daly waters. Thanks for the info.

Some years later I drove out past Mudginberri about 50km on the plains. Some big mosquitoes out there...lol

Boo Boo.
I've been up that way a few time, brother worked there for 5 or 6 years (Apprenticeship) First visit 1985 last visit 1996. Once you are in with the locals your pretty right. There are some great spot tat the tourists don't get to. As
Kakadu has gone to S**T. It may take a little longer to get to
Darwin now as they put in a speed limit.
I loved the place, but if you are used to city life then you will have a hard time.
Cheers

We live in
Scone NSW. It has a
population of 5000 or so, and we are 3hrs from sydneyWhich we hate) and 2hrs from Ncastle. we have lived in the country for over 20 yrs now and think we will handle it,
Darwin is only 2.5 hrs away, and we both like gatting into the bush albeit with a few creature comforts.
We liked what we saw when we were up there for the three days prior to the interview.
Will let the
forum know how we go when we get up there.

Haven't been up there for many years now Boo, but I am sure you will have a ball.
Unless it has changed heaps there should be plenty of light aircraft in and out.
Should be able to get the odd 'famil' flight around the top end.
....and fishing, the locals would be able to show you
places that city dwellers would kill for.
Enjoy the cultural changes..
Cheers
Michael

Hi to all this is my first post on this
forum. My name is Steve and I actually live in
Jabiru and its not a bad place to be. You shouldn't find it to hard to get work as the tourist season starts to fire up in April. Let me know what you do and I may be able to give you some contacts. April is also the run off and the fishing goes off,and don't worry you can get a beer at the Croc hotel, aurora lodge, the sports club and the golf club the golf club being the only one that has take away after being a member for 6 months. Most people buy bulk in
Darwin. the water is drinkable to if you like the taste of calcium. Having
Kakadu as your back yard it doesn't get any better. If you can get through the build up and the humidity of your fist year here you wont leave have a safe trip up

Steve
Sorry about the late reply, but have been a bit busy. lol
Will have to catch up with you at the golf club when we get up there.
Every thing is still going to plan and will be there to unpack etc on the 9th March.
The only snag so far is I will be bringing my boat ( 15', 50hp) up without its power head. Got it serviced by a mate about a week ago and it is making expensive noises so he will keep the power head and send it up in about six weeks (can only do it on Sundays)
