I hope to visit Mutawintji NP near Broken Hill in early March. I couldn't find any posts in the Archives.
Can anyone post info?
Thanks
Bob

Some picnic spots. Some shady camp spots. Daily tours by local indigenes. Be prepared for lots of walking. I havent done the walks (health problems) but they say some of the rock art is very good.

At the moment the weather is cool for summer but March could be quite warm. The flies will reign supreme so take a flynet

Cheers

We visited Mutawintji (locally pronounced mar-tar-winge-e) in July 2003. There is no 4WD there, but it was one of the most magical parks we have been in. It is 10km NW of Broken Hill off the Tibooburra road. In wet weather check road conditions before travelling. After a long historical thing (Park created 1998) it is now administered by the local people. There are Heritage Tours every Wednesday and Saturday between April and November. These dates may have changed, phone 08-8088-7000 if they are there and answering, or the Broken Hll Office 08-8080-3200. They were lovely people, knowledgeable and helpful. We did the Aboriginal Foods and painitings tour and was excellent. We did 3 of the 5 or 6 walks on our own, and also visited the homestead. Ask about the large fretted rock that was removed by Uni students, and how it came to come back !
We stayed at the Homestead Creek camping ground in our CT. This has drinking water 9 (or did) flush toilets, and solar heated showers. To get a warm shower have yours mid to late afternoon when the sun has warmed things up and every other camper has run the the warm water out. Fee was $5 per adult per night, back then. No need to book sites.
There is a lot of historical detail and other useful information on www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au work printing out
If you want more info or to see some photos MM me and I will see what can be done.

Nah nah Gramps. Willem is right. I meant to type 130Km NE of Boken Hill, got the finger fumbles, and missed the error in the visual check before pressing the "go" button. I accept 125Km as near enough. My mistake. I apologise.

LOL we're a merciless bunch here Arkay :))) For a while there I thought I was the only one with fumbling fingers and failing eyesight hahahahaha

It's good to know that most errors get picked up pretty quickly.

Hi Bob,

Was in Mutawintji last year, and as the rest have said fantastic spot and highly recommended. I mentioned it in my trip report (post 35970). The rock art and interpretations are fascinating, and the gorges are gorgeous (sorry - couldn't help myself). I am sure you'll have a great time (take good walking shoes).

Cheers,
Jezza.

We went there in 1999? Because it was Easter and the school holidays there was a special tour and we saw some great Rock Art and If I am not mistaken a Burke and Wills camp mark? First time I ever saw Budgies in the wild and I remember not far from the carpark there is a great little walk that leads to a Waterhole, a great place for a swim.

cheers

we were there last august and needed 4wd just to get in the road was pretty cut up as bus load of school kids went in before the road had set after rain we only did a couple of the walks but our friends did several and had a ball its worth taking your togs on a couple of the walks as there are some nice rockpools towards the end of them
if you get to white cliffs there is a new national park about 40 ks out that has rock chippings??? ithink thats what they were called as against paintings ask at the local n/p building we were given a mud map

We were there in about 1989. They were just building a boardwalk that takes you around a whole mountainside of rock engravings. Best I've ever seen. Hope that you are still able to access this area. The ranger at the time was a great bloke - came around the campground, organised an impromptu tour and it was a great long weekend.
