Hi,
could anyone give me expectations of what damage I might encounter on doing Cordillo Downs, Birdsville, and Strezlecki tracks in September.
I have 40th Anniversary toyota, can no longer buy genuine mags.....and I've been told mags will be damaged severelly by rock etc. I drive very much according to conditions, so therefore, not stupidly, but would appreciate an honest opinion from anyone, who has done the trek.

Ann,

There is little chance of rim damage on any of these tracks.
Much more chance of a damaged tyre and even that is rare.

Go forth and enjoy yourself without undue concern.
(It's a good idea to carry a second spare, or tyre just in case)

You would be hard pressed to do rim damage unless you got a flat at speed. Just take it easy and enjoy. Tyre damage is in proportion to the square of your speed. 1/2 speed means 1/4 damage.

bit like hitting a tree in the car

at 25km/h the damage to the vehicle will be relatively minor.

at 50km/h there will be significant damage to the vehicle and probably to occupants

at 100km/h the damage to vehicle and occupants is catastrophic.

each time the speed doubles the energy released by impact increases by an order of magnitude.

Reminds me of the program on TV last night from NZ.

Bloke killed himself driving home.
His car was unroadworthy with the back brakes deliberately disconnected, the chassis full of rust and had no compliance label, he was apparently driving without lights along a country road, but the cause of him crashing into a roadside culvert and driving his head through the windscreen was that he was 8 times over the legal limit of blood alcohol content.

At least the poor bloke wouldn't have known, or felt much.

Ann.

Yep all of the above, & expect stone bruising/chipping to the tyres.

If your towing a trailer, FIT REAR WINDOW PROTECTION!! or you will lose the rear window, also watch for rocks being thrown up from vehicles coming the other way. (move over & slow down)

Drive the conditions & all will be ok.

Have fun. 8 )>

Ditto to the above indeed - with lower pressures and conservative driving you should expect a happy run with no damage at all (I always think the second spare wheel - or case at least, to be very wise). As I recall from my last run, about 20% of the Strz could be quite stony, with about 10% of the BVT and about 50% of the CDT the same (rough figures of course). Rain damage is of course another issue altogether and they have had 'issues' up there in recent times. I must remember to get some pics of road surfaces on my next run - will put them in a lib on my site - I have a few on the puta, from the Kimberley. Have a good 'un.

Excuse me Geo - possibly TMR (too much red :-0)
Purely in the context of the original post .......Birdsville Track, Cordillo Downs
Track.

Lucy - in the post context again - in terms of outback travel, I reckon those percentages would be somewhere near the mark - the non-stony sections can be surprisingly smooth - at times, you could only do better on sealed surfaces ! On this forum in the past, I've seem posters boast of 'averaging' 120kph plus down the BV track !! Strange to me (foolhardy even) but others chimed in and backed up those ideas (at roughly the same stage of the year, we toured up to BV at about 80 all the way). I met two 'Dakar style" serious dirt bikers at William Creek last year - claimed to have been topping out at 140kph on the Oodnadatta track above up from Marree ! It takes all types - even though the OT was a smooth as a baby's bot, we are far more likely to be dawdling along at 80, and having a good look at the countryside we find so attractive.

Hell - a great demonstration all round of how ineffective brief communications can be via these silly computer things (I recall the oft-quoted wartime signal that a puzzled general back at headquarters got from one of his field officers - "Send three and fourpence - we're going to a dance" !

Sorry to go against what everyone else has said - but after having driven this road (Cordillo Downs) last August / September, I wouldn't take my factory Toyota alloys out there ever!

This was the worst road of our whole trip getting out to the Simpson (in terms of stones flying) etc and the damage which rocks did to the undercarriage and inside of my rims was crazy! I ran split rims for the sake of being prepared for these to get stone chipped etc so didn't really worry too much.
Stones ricochet (spelling) off everywhere and would certainly chip all faces of the rims. Mind you, I run pretty aggressive tyres on my split rims (MRF Super Traction 12 ply) and would throw up larger and more stones than say my BFG All terrains etc.

In saying this, you could probably get away without any damage as I'm sure others have. I just like to keep my alloys in excellent condition and avoid marking them if at all possible. It's all a trade off I suppose. After all, we have a fourby so that we can get out there an explore.................

Best of luck with it and enjoy the trip - it's a great drive!

I agree with the comments by Dieseldude.

I was there in 4/06 and the Cordillo downs road was far rougher than the Birdsville or the Strez. However if you drive to the conditions you can mitigate any serious damage. Do NOT even think about the Cordillo downs road without two spares.

UM...............................P,RAPS I'LL STAY IN MT. GAMBIER.
NOT REALLY.. TOO MUCH OUT THERE TO SEE AND DO.
WILL HAVE TO HAVE A REALLY GOOD THINK ON THIS ONE, OBVIOUSLY DEISELDUDE LOOKS AFTER HIS RIG, AS I DO MINE. IT'LL HAVE IT'S 10 YEAR BIRTHDAY WHILE WE'RE AWAY. MIGHT HAVE TO SPRING FOR SECOND-HAND RIMS.
CAN'T GO TO BIRDSVILLE, AND NOT DO THE REST OF IT......................

But - I'm sure many others will agree (as Brenton says), "slowing down" is the key - my Jack has shiny mags and paintwork too - we can choose to damn near avoid all damage to tyres, rims and paintwork, by just taking it easy ! BTW - a pic of the top (the good part) of the Cordillo track ..........
