I'm heading for a family holiday to the Blue Mnts in April and will be staying in
Katoomba. I'm planning on visiting
the Lost City, Glow Worm tunnels and
Jenolan Caves. Any other must see and do's in the area.

The not so
lost city is worth a look too it's basicly other side of the ridge, Gardens of Stone NP, lots of good tracks in there with some spectaculer
views, Zig Zag railway is if your into trains,
hill End is close, Capatee and Turon Gates, Mount Panarama at
Bathurst, just depends on how tough or mild you want the tracks to be too.

While in
Katoomba make time to see the special movie shown there called "The Edge", must see for first time in the mountains. Includes info and pictures on the Blue Mts National Park and the Wollimi Pine.
If you are going as far as
Mudgee, go East to
Dunns Swamp (no longer a
swamp but a very nice
dam), good camping out of school holidays and long weekends, we saw a platupus swimming in the creek below the
dam. Take the few walks available around the
dam and the dome rocks.

Agree with Chris, Dunn's
Swamp is a nice spot to spend a few days. I love the mist rising off the water in the early mornings. Avoid
Easter as it will be standing room only.

You can do all the touristy things as
well, scenic railway, scenicscender, cross the railway line at Blackheath and drive down into the Megalong valley and take tea at the tea rooms, Zig Zag Railway is worth a visit if not for the train ride then just marvel at the work that went into the viaducts all hand done without a diamond saw anywhere. If the Giant stairway is open go down it and come back up via scenic railway (a decent walk but worth it). A great place for a family holiday actually - you are to be commended on your choice...

Hi if you are heading to the glowworm tunnel be prepared for lots of potholes and some bigguns at that. The road gets quite narrow in
places (runs along the old railway) so take care there are some speedy asian wip em in and out tour operators there daily. Go from Bungleboori west down Blackfellas hand track to the
cave to look at some faded but recognisable spit pictures. You will come out at Lidsdale. You can go west on the
Mudgee rd towards the Mt Piper power station they have a free expo on 7 days if you think it would be interesting. Then head for
Capertee,
Sofala,
Hill End, bridle trail to
Bathurst across to
Oberon, Kanangra Walls,
Jenolan Caves and back to
Katoomba. Not all in one day if you want to take in the view!! Don't worry too much about
the Lost City as you will be driving thru very similar if not better areas near the Blacfellas Hand
cave.
Enjoy

Having just moved to the Blue Mtns, I'm still in awe at the things to see and do. Today, I went to
Wentworth Falls (beautiful - also has a very impressive staircase to marvel at how it got there!) and we had a picnic at
Wentworth Falls
Lake (if you have
young kids, they will love the ducks) As previously mentioned, Gardens of Stone Nat Pk, particularly the Baal Bone Gap trip as listed in the 4wd
Treks Close to
Sydney by Craig Lewis and Cathy Savage. A trip to Yeranderie is also worthwhile - great preserved town, heaps of history. Also
check out some of the alternative routes down the western side of the mountains eg Coxs Rd, Lawsons Long Alley that all take you into the Hartley Valley (they are now purely walking
trails) where there are a couple of great old buildings that are now restaurant/B&B type establishments. A drive up
Hassans Walls near
Lithgow would be on the cards. Govetts Leap, Perrys Lookdown, Narrowneck Plateau, Kings Tableland etc etc etc... you could spend every weekend up the Blue Mtns for a year and not see everything...
