Does anyone know if there is a simple web based click and drag trip maker.
For example, if I want to explore different route options between say
Sydney and
Darwin, I want to be able to just click on
Sydney and then say Roma/longreach/mt isa/three ways/
darwin and have it tell me how many K's from A to B, or say
Sydney to Brisbane/Townsvill/Julia Creek/Mt isa etc etc.
I suppose I am looking for something similar to the programs that ship with the various garmin/Tom Toms etc.
I know there are sites like Travelmate etc but find them tedious to use when you are playing around with various options.

The Garmin Software is nothing short of brilliant, will do exactly what you want and then upload that track to your Garmin GPS ....if you had one, but... it must be a Garmin GPS that supports Routes and Tracks ,..ie Quest, Map 276C, Street Pilot, / not Nuvi's

Geez mate, if you reckon Travelmate is tedious, you are a bit hard to please.
I find the Map Maker function brilliant for preplanning trips. I just do it section by section and enter the details into a spreadsheet. Printed out, this gives a ready reference for planning fuel stops, layovers, etc. and giving an approximate travel time between stops.
Preplanning trips I find are hardly tedious. It just adds to the whole joy of planning that "next trip away".

Hey Cruiser,
As has been mentioned,
check out Google Maps Australia here ==> maps.google.com.au/
Just type in your start and arrival destinations and presto......a route map with distances and directions :-) For instance type in "
sydney to darwin" into the search area and it will give you your directions. For any variations required, just break the route down into smaller distances eg.
Sydney to
St George,
St george to
Surat,
Surat to
Roma,
Roma to
Mitchell,
Mitchell to
Darwin.
Hope this helps
Andrew

Just had a look at Google maps the street part is way out of date in my area there are streets on it that don't exist.
The satellite images are good to look at.
all the best

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.
The RACQ site is probably the best for my needs at the moment. At least it has the advanced option which allows me to put in say: sydney/brisbane/roma/mt isa or sydney/tamworth/st george/mt isa etc etc and it gives me directions and distances and so on.
Travelmate doesnt appear to offer this type of option and it was because I have to break the trip down into smaller sections that I found it tedious. It is very useful once you have decided on the final route, but as a for having a quick look at various route options, that is where I feel that it was not suitable.
The Google Maps site has the same limitations as Travelmate when just looking and playing with various route options.
I did in actual fact sit down with Travelmate and break the trip into smaller sections and play around with various route options and ended up setting up a spreadsheet with all the distances and travel times, but it just seemed like a long drawn out process.
I guess after seeing my mate plan a trip on his Streetpilot software I was hoping for a quicker way of doing it. I just figured that if that software is available for the PC then hopefully someone has a web based version of it.
Oh
well, I guess the ultimate solution is to buy a Garmin or Tom Tom or similar and use the software that comes with them.
Thanks anyway for the suggestions.
