We're contemplating a trip to the Red Centre in the July school hols (NSW). I'm trying to find out some info on the route from Kings Canyon (Watarrka NP) to Alice. I believe you can go one of two ways, Mareenie Loop or back via the black top and up the Stuart Hwy. I've heard the
Mereenie Loop is quite corrugated.
I'm keen to get to Alice via the quickest route as we will be probably basing ourselves in Alice and doing day trips out to various
places.
We'll be towing a C/T with one (or possibly 2 others in the convoy - also towing C/Ts).
Family affair with kids under 10
My car is a Mazda Tribute, the others are a MQ Patrol and late model TD Prado.
Cheers.

Hi Phil, we are going that way end of July, have our WA permits but are still trying for NT one. How long did it take for you to get your NT permit and how did you go about it?
Thanks in advance
Cheers

Gday Handy,
Yeh Ive heard,
But as long as my arse points to the ground points to the ground I wont be paying to drive on a taxpayer funded road that was originaly built to access an oil field which the locals are already payed royalties for. Unless of course the locals get of there arses and start upkeeping the road themselves or at least cleaning it rather than dirtying it. And we both know when that will happen....When hell freezes over!
I feel better now!
Had much rain at the Berg?
Looks like its all cleared in town. Just hope they dont get too much more around Tennant before
easter or they wont let us through to Policemans.
Cheers

Hi bockstar1. Mereenie is scenic but will take 8 hours to do the325km with a lunch stop, getting bogged in a sand drift, involvement in some one elses accident and a flat tyre on the van. The 500km of tar will take less than 6 hours and you won't have to visit Bob Janes in the Alice. Or try the 99km dirt section of the
Ernest Giles Rd across to the Henbury Craters to give a 332km trip. The 11km section from the Stuart Hwy was OK when we did it and the craters are worth a look. See pix in
Places section. Cheers, Warrie

Bockstar1,
We travelled from
Alice Springs to Kings Canyon via the
Mereenie Loop in August last year. We were lucky as the grader had not long been over the road and it was in very good condition. We left Alice mid morning, stopped at Hermannsberg for about an hour, had a lunch stop and one more stop at a look out not far from Kings Canyon. We arrived at the campground there about 4.30.
Probably the best bet for you is to ask questions at Kings Canyon Resort campground from people who had come that way...and make your decision then.
You need to get a permit to use
Mereenie Loop and you can do this from Kings Canyon Resort.
When we were there the resort had nightly entertainment that was very kid friendly...got them up, joining in and having a ball.
All the best
Viv

That's a very balanced contribution and sound advice Viv.
The
Mereenie Loop road, like most dirt roads, will vary with conditions.
Checking with locals before deciding is probably the best approach, but going via the "Loop" road will reduce backtracking. Hermannsberg is the home of the Albert Namatjira Gallery and is
well work a visit.
From Hermannsberg you can the Namatjira Drive up to
Glen Helen Gorge (and Pub) and come into the Alice from the west, through the MacDonnell Ranges and all the Gorges along the way.
A
Mereenie Loop pass is only a few dollars and as Viv said, can be purchased from the Resort. You also receive an information booklet containing relevant history of the area.

For the interest of others lookng at this post, you can get the
Mereenie Loop permits at the
Alice Springs Tourist Info Centre if you are going A/S to Kings Canyon, rather than South to North. My vague recollection was that you have to get them the day before you travel (or the same day), as they are only valid for a day or so. That is, you cannot purchase them 3 or 4 days (or longer) in advance.
Someone with local knowlege may be able to clarify that.

I know Im setting myself up for abuse here ......But..... I wouldnt even bother about a permit. Just drive through. By getting a permit all you will be doing is supporting the welfare dependant society that now has become accepted on communities and NT towns.

Could not agree more. I reuse to buy a permit too travel on roads and areas that as a tax payer I am just as entitled to travel on as anyone else regardless of colour. I was born in this country and it is
mine as
well as every body else to enjoy. I travelled all around Innimincka for a couple of weeks with no permits. I will pay my
camping fees with no problems but as for permits - NO WAY.

Payed the 2 bucks for the permit and nobody asked for it. Begs the question why bother but for the minimal cost the chances of getting pinged and fined it's just not worth the risk.
Odd though that all the other permits are free.

I did the
the loop late last year and in comparison to the barely maintained desert tracks i had just been driving for the previous 3 months i was amazed at how badly corrugated it was. I was in an 80 series and gald i wasnt towing. The canyon was worth the trip though. I would recommend staying down at
Kings Creek Station just down the road to enjoy the sectioned off little campsites and to avoid the circus that is any Voyages resort.

There are signs saying no caravans on the road - there for a reason.
I agree with advice to check conditions at the time.
When we went through, I'd just come off the
Great Central Road and the
Mereenie Loop was worse, tho not as long obviously. We came across a borrowed camper trailer that had flipped over after a spring hanger broke due to going down a big hole. Tow car was a Paj I think, fortunately heavy enough to not roll it over too. Driver was stunned for hours. It was a hot and dusty place to be stuck with kids and wondering how you're going to tell your mate his camper is in pieces 300ks west of Alice.
Also agree with staying at the station for a more low key stay rather than the neat organisation of a normal caravan
park.
Tim

We did
the loop late last June just after the rains. Track was corrugated the worst being around Hermensberg. Drive to the conditions and you should be ok. Other option is to take the Giles Rd which is between the Canyon and Lasseter HWY. Never done that road but have heard that the
river crossing can be deep after rains.

Gday,
The Ernest Giles road actually runs between Stuart Highway and the Luritja road.
The Luritja roads runs between Lassetter Highway and the Canyon. The Ernest Giles road is usually a good road until it rains.

I stayed at
Kings Creek Station last week and after talking to the locals, was advised that the
Ernest Giles Rd is in crap condition and should only be driven in high clearance 4WD's

It has recently rained all over the centre which is probably the reason for the road condition.
