Can anybody tell me which way is the quickest please .
1 ) Syd /
Winton /
Boulia
2 ) Syd /
Charleville /
Quilpie /
Windorah /
Bedourie /
Boulia
3 ) Syd /
Cunnamulla /
Eulo /
Quilpie /
Windorah /
Bedourie /
Boulia
I am sure some ways are more interesting than others , but I am after a quick trip not a scenic one .
I was thinking of staying at
Cunnamulla on the first night - can anyone recommend a motel in beautiful downtown
Cunnamulla . If not , I will stay the night in Burke - I know a good motel there with three guard dogs and an electric fence !
Thanks a lot ,
Willie .

Are you saying , that is the shortest route of the three ? It does not look like that on the map .
Thanks ,
Willie .

Hey Willie
Sorry to say this but
Sydney,
Port Augusta, Alice,
Halls Creek etc is the quickest way. 110kmh most of the way and 130kmh once you get to the Territory.
All other roads, although they may look shorter, will slow you down due to corrugations washouts etc.
Boy you like driving the long hauls.
Cheers

Willem ,
This is the fourth year in a row I have travelled to the
Pilbara /
Kimberley . Got to do it now - might be dead tomorrow .
BUT I am SO sick of going across the Nullarbor - if I have to do it again , I might actually die of boredom .
This time , I am going over on the Tanami and back down through Telfer to the central road . I have my permits for that already . I will probably come back through
Broken Hill from Alice , but to avoid boredom , want to go across the Plenty on the way over .
Willie .

It's 110 limit half of the way and on bitumen, Cville/Lreach/Winton/
Boulia.
So you could sit on 120 most of the way, depending how hard you want to push it.
A lot more dirt via
Bedourie. Not sure what speed you would do on the dirt, don't know what current road conditions are like.
Trying to remember the name of the motel in Cunamulla that we usually stay at.
Slipping the mind at the moment. God beds, basic rooms, reasonable price.
Better get back to you on that one.
Bit of a hopeless reply isn't it, not much use?

Hi Old Plodder ,
Thanks for that . I will try to Google up some info on
Cunnamulla accom. as it's the logical place to stop on the first night .
Thanks ,
Willie .

Wilie,
I am with Willem on the shortest time via
Broken Hill, but through Q and along the Plenty is a good run also, but a little longer in my opinion.

The shortest way in driving time is to put the vehicle on the train to Alice. Sleep.eat and drink all the way.

Willie, having done it both ways several times I'd vote for
Broken Hill, PA, Alice and then the Tanami. Generally better road conditions and less chance of knocking tyres and vehicle around compared to the Plenty which can be very rough, dusty and corrugated. The hardest bit is getting over the mountains west of
Sydney.
I wouldn't even consider the dirt roads in western QLD if you are after the quickest and easiest route.

Peter ,
As I said to Chris , I have my heart set on going across the Plenty Hwy. I just went to Alice and back last month via
Broken Hill and I need a change .
Thanks ,
Willie .

I reckon from
Cunnamulla,
Eulo, cut up to
Quilpie then to
Windorah,
Bedourie,
Boulia is much more interesting that staying on the highway. The roads are ok too, mostly bitumen just a bit narrow.

Good Day,just reading Query from Willie re
Great Central Road.
Am I correct in assuming I would require permits to travel GCR as I was thinking of returning from WA this way depending on road & weather conditions later this year.
Any way I am leaving Anzac Day for 3 to 4 months travelling where ever & have been following
Forum for other peoples ideas.
Best Wishes.

"Therifleman"
Yes you need a permit to traverse the Central Road .
See here Site Link
I also also asked Newcrest for permission to use their private road as they have a boom
gate at the Telfer
mine . I am sure they would let you through , if you look like a straight shooter !
Cheers ,
Willie.
PS WA does not recognise a gun licence from other states .
