Thinking of doing the above at Xmas this year towing a big van over about 4/5 weeks. Anyone got any suggestions as to:
Too far in 4 weeks?
Where to stay?
where to see?
Free camp or not?
Van has no solar or genny but decent battery and Redarc so can manage a day or two without outside help!
All help apprecciated for first decent trip!

Pretty hot time of year to be in those places.
Very uncomfortable and the flies will drive you nuts.

Yep - scary mean maximum:

Was up there in Dec 05 and most days were 43+ ... and nights just a little better.

Should add that you will in all likelihood not be able to climb "The Rock" as they close is if the temp is higher than 36 deg.

As Andrew says the temp is a very mean maximum well above 36 most days.

Andrew

No problem with the trip length, or time. However at that time of year the flies and heat are going to make the trip quite interesting.

Ularu in my opinion is a complete waste of time and energy.

Yep, pretty hot at Xmas. We did the odd Xmas trip up north over the years and liked the fact that there were no tourists.

As far as itinery, well I'd be going where the water is. Feel free to go from Vic to Tibooburra (pub), Camerons Corner (pub) and then via Merty Merty to Innamincka (pub). Camp yourself at Cullyamurra waterhole (you'll be by yourself). Spend the mornings in the water, spend the afternoons down at the pub. The pubs are usually quiet, which is rather nice. It would be nice to spend New Years eve at the Innamincka pub - we did one year, and it was great - all the locals come in and its a great night.

Then I'd be willing to head south to Marree and do the Oodnadatta track - can sink yourself into the odd hot spring, and there are pubs at Marree, William Ck and Oodnadatta to spend the afternoons when it all gets a bit hot. Up to Dalhousie then do the Mt Dare(pub)/Old Andado track to Alice Springs. Its a great time to sink yourself in the gorges in the West McDonell Ranges - Ellery Gorge and Ormiston Gorge are still nice cool water in Summer. Palm Valley will probably be as hot as - give it a miss. We'd go to Kings Canyon, as the water is nice and cool in the Canyon, and I believe that theres a pub there now :-))

Uluru is a one night visit at that time of year.

Then try to escape - Stuart Highway south is just a hot drive. Turn off at Glendambo (pub), to Kingoonya and south to Ceduna. Get a nice sea breeze there, and wander down the west Eyre Peninsula to Ceduna. Spend the rest of your time taking in the great seaside spots down to Port Lincoln, and then home.

Cheers
Phil

All of which sounds bloody brilliant but as i said in the original post - i will be towing a big van (23' twin axle ) so its not likely to happen as last time i looked most of the tracks you mentioned were not caravan friendly!!
Thanks anyway for the time to reply - maybe next year when i have sold the van!!

Hi Waddo,
Yeah, I was guessing your van was a smaller offroad van. But 23 foot is rather huge. Are you pulling it behind the Navara??

Phil, if you had New Years at Camerons Corner, you can have three New Years Eve drinks.
Depends on where you plant your feet at midnight with these crazy timezones and daylight saving.
