Hi from italy
i shall be in WA in august and i have short time and many sites to visiting.....
I'm planning in one day Lancelin - Kalbarri (with visit to Pinnacles).
I know that is a long trip (580km) but i need know if is better Off-road Lancelin-Cervantes or back-road to Brand Highway(1) and if is better Cervantes-Dongara by Off-road+coastal road or back-road to Brand Highway.
I can save some km but save also time?
Please don't respond that it's too long way for 1only day because i don't have alternative :D
Thx
Giorgio

Dragonlord,

It is doable in a day, but by road. If you were to take the offroad part, you would lose inexcess of half your day just from lancelin to cervantes. The majority of the track is sand track and sand dune, with some rough limestone thrown in for good measure. Also you would need to check with the navy to make sure that they are not bombing at the range, otherwise this could hold you up for a while on the track.

I can not coment on cervantes to dongara as i have not taken any offroad tracks between there.

Personally, I would skip lancelin, take the brand straight to the pinnacles, however make it early to avoid all the tourist buses. Then skip on to dongara and kalbarri. Plenty to see in between. The highway is in good condition, and the speed limit is 110 most of the way.

Lancilin to cervanties is a good drive by 4WD, beach can be very soft at times and tides sometimes play a part in that. There are inland tracks and the beach ones so I guess you have options there.

I'd go brand hwy to dongara. And mate... You'll just love Kalbarri, I wish I could have stayed longer when I was there in March.

Further to Damon_m's comments.

Lancelin to Cervantes is a great drive by 4wd, but there are many tracks that wander off into the bush to what once were squatter shacks. None of the tracks were signposted last time I went that way, not even the main track to Cervantes.

From Cervantes you can drive (along the coast for most of the way) on bitumen to Dongara and then on to Geraldton and Kalbarri.

Pinnacles south of Cervantes are well worth a look but as you say "it's a long days drive" even without sightseeing stops.

Enjoy it

Cervantes-Dongara is a very nice drive along the Coast with spots where you can drive right to the waters edge, Lancelin - Cervantes is just under 100klm and will be slow going due to Sand , if you have Google Earth have a look

Giorgio,

If you have a night in Kalbarri, do yourself a favour and go for dinner at Finlay's Fish BBQ. One of the best value and fun meals in Aus.

Matt.

As been said above. Stick to the major roads, bypass Lancelin and take the Brand Hwy to Cervantes. Then take the main road to Dongara and onto Kalbarri.

You will probably spend an hour or so at the Pinnacles, so your best bet is to leave reasonably early in the morning. When driving in the dark, in particular the early morning / evenings beware of kangaroos and Emus, hit one and it will wreck your car.

Remember to drive on the left hand side of the road - don't laugh or scoff, many people from Europe and the Americas forget about this.

Hope this helps.

Karl

There'a a VERY large lady at the servo / general store on the foreshore at Kalbarri who served me a few weeks ago and mid transaction she waddled off and casually anounced to the store she needed to go take a dump, leaving me standing at the counter wating for a replacement to take over the reins. Such panache!

Still laughing now. Put me off my tucker for a while though I might add. 'Mrs Creosote' she will forever be to me from now on.

As to your question Giorgio, I'd say stick to the main roads. Have fun mate!

Lancelin-Cervantes takes about 3 hours, if you can get thru there cos of bombing.
Skip Lancelin and do the coast between Cervantes and Dongara. There is around 6 to 7 hours + driving at 100kmh in what you plan, without pinacles and lunch etc. There isnt really anything you'll see at Lancelin that you wont see further up the coast, nice spot though it is.
