hi guys, was wondering what your thoughts were on this. i currently own a 1999 holden jackaroo 3.5L petrol. i have only recently in the last 18 months started 4wding and am very addicted i am very happy with its performance on and off road qnd was wondering if i should sell it and buy something different (keeping in mind that i will not be able to sell it to cover the amount owing on it.) should i get a second car as a weekend play machine as the jackaroo is my only car, or do i do the mods for eg. air lockas, whinches etc

This is always a difficult one because it depends on several factors , most importantly finance. Having the Roo on finance and then modifying it could also be dangerous. I would suggest you keep the Roo, do only the minimal mods without altering too much from the original vehicle and then look affer it. You mention possibly buying another vehicle , but you mention still owing money for the Roo..? Surely you wouldn't borrow more money to buy a 2nd play thing.. A little confused with that..?

The second play vechile would not be financed, the theory behind the second car is that if i damage it i will still have a car to drive to work and back. i know the sensible thing would be to use that money to pay off the roo ...........but where is the fun in that.

I think you want an ex miner cheap and honest and good for bush bashing dont matter too much what it looks like. You would get what you pay for and little depreciation. Just make sure of the mechs and road worthy. Dont have to worry about getting near
the beach or scratched.

brogs,
I have the same vehicle as you and it is a very capable vehicle.
What do you mean by a "weekend play machine"
If you are going bush bashing, or romping around in a quarry, or similar, then get a cheap weekender that wont cost you much if you trash it.
As for the Jack, I don't have air Locka's or a winch and I get by just fine.
Just depends on your use.

Cut your loss's & ditch it quickly. If you intend to play harder with the Jack in the bush (locka's &
winches) I'd suggest you may need a 2nd car to get around in while it's being repaired. It's my observation that on medium offroad they excell but push them hard & they break. (regually) Noel......... Come out of the closet & pass on your experience to this fella. I know you're there :-)

Push any 4x4 and they break !!!!
I think the Jack will take any punishment that other 4x4's will dish out, just may not get to the same
places ( IFS front etc )
Talk to the blokes who used to race them ( stock standard and modified )

Gronk of course they all break,
mine is testament to that , it's just some take more punishment than others & if brogs is seriously concidering a 4by with locka's & a winch then now may just be the best time to get into something with a little more ground clearance that will handle the tracks he'll take it on. Wheel travel & tyre size are the 2 key items the Jack sorely misses out on with minimal scope to modify so if it wont get to the same
places as you say maybe it would be better to modify something that has more offroad potential from the start.

i have been doing some research after viewing your posts and managed to find someone who could do a front end swap for me(change ifs to solid axle) fora reasonable price alot cheaper then another car would be. this would give me more
suspension travel and enable a bigger lift. .......... would this be worthwhile maybe..
thanks brogs........

Brogs it really depends on what you want to do with this vehicle. If it's to be a weekend warrior for tackling steep rough boggy tracks then I'd start again with something like a GQ which is excellent in almost standard trim & then has heaps of assesories available both new & 2nd hand. If you are fitting the winch & locka's for just in case & don't intend to get into the deep end then keep the Jack. If you want a reliable vehicle to do remote area driving over rough terrain, again I'd upgrade to something similar to an 80 series.
Major modifications to any car (like an axle swap) are difficult to keep legal or get an engineers Certificate for & if not done right will handle terrible.
As the Jack is only worth between 8 & $14k, spending so much just to make it catch up other standard vehicles would be more costly in the end.
Buy something more suitable to the purpose you want to use it for that doesn't need as much modification.

Hi Brogs,
I have exactly the same Jackaroo & have had it since new.
Mine is stock standard SE model & I have had no problems at all & it has gone everywhere I have wanted to go.
If you want to go aggressively "off road" perhaps you need to upgrade, but in my opinion the Jack will go most
places.
Mine does go offroad & it has done lots of soft sand,
Cape York (full OTL & side tracks) - Central Aussie (
Chambers Pillar,
Palm Valley etc etc) - Simpson Dessert and heaps of other places/tracks. Never let me down,
Willy
