Hi all,
Anybody help me with the best place to hire a satphone on Central Coast (NSW) or Sydney. I am heading to the Centre for a few weeks before hopefully meeting up with the Exploroz gathering on 7 July. The wife has given me time off on condition I take a phone. Might be lonely but looking forward to it. Leaving on the 11 June and back by 12 July.

Also, how much longer would it take me to get say from Alice to Warraweena (or the Flinders) via Oodnadatta instead of via Port Agusta.

I am actually not going to stay in AS but trek slowly (I hope) through the East & West McDonnels so will be rejoining the Stuart Hwy a couple 100ks south of Alice.

Cheers

Hi Fred,
I just hired a Sat Phone from Australian Two Way Radio Rentals for $12 per day.
They are in Victoria, but I am sure that they will send. Their Phone No. is 03 9580 9666.
Cheers,
SKP

Excuse my ignorance but how long is the battery life and how do you recharge? Yes I'm a female so feel free to bag my lack of knowledge as my other half probably knows or thinks he knows all this. We need one for about 16 days

Hi Fred
If you'd like to support an ExplorOz supporter try Satcom Hire and Sales they charge you only for the duration you need the phone.
Their ad was running right by your post when I last looked - if not here's the link.

satcomhire.com.au/

Often its worth searching our business directory - www.exploroz.com/Directory/Default.aspx -
as most people who advertise here are ExplorOz friendly (ie are readers and users themselves) and many offer member rewards.

Cheers

Yes I agree BUT!!
Like all things price can dictate where we go. I would be happy to use Satcom Hire - I checked out their website - but they would cost me a fair bit more than other places around the traps as well as having to pay while it is being sent back and forth (adds extra days).

G'day Fred

Alice to Warraweena via Oodnadatta should be (if travelling constantly) about 6 hours shorter than via Port Augusta. You will see a lot more going via the Oodnadatta Track.

You could drive all the way from Alice to Warraweena on gravel roads if you wished to.

Fred,
Try Lake Macquarie Communications, if they don't they will point you in the right direction.

I assume there is not very good coverage around warraweena then?
not even on a nearby hill?
Might have to go the satphone too then......

The old CDMA can reach the tower at Leigh Creek if you care to climb a hill or stand in exactly the right spot at the homestead. There are good communications on top of Mt Gill but it is a 2.5 hour drive to get there in Low Range...lol

In January while I was minding Warraweena, Stony came back to do a job and the old truck broke down. If it hadn't been for his Satphone to call me he would have had a long walk ahead of him.

If you are only coming for a few days then surely you wouldn't need to communicate with the rest of the world, unless you are running your business on an hourly basis......:-)))

Willem, it will all depend on the experience of the people running the farm, if JohnR is at warraweena too there won't be much experience at home unless we get one of our previous guys back for a few days, which is possible.
the 2.5 hour low range drive has some appeal;-)
we have 3g phones nowadays so they might be a bit of an unknown

do you think the station managers would take a message if we were to check in with them every day or 2? that could be an option

Which night do you think will have the bush dance?
and which night the wit lit???

Thanks,
Nick
