We have a 6 - 8 week trip planned for Jul-Aug, and we'll be camping - under the stars when possible.

My uncle has just asked if we have a spare seat. The problem is, he's 91!

We are looking to fly him out to meet up with us at Uluru, then take him to Alice and do the West Macdonnells, then fly him back to Sydney.

We would like to hire some sort of campervan - maybe not even 4WD - at Uluru for a week or so and hand it back in Alice.

Does anyone know if there's a hire mob that would do a one way hire Uluru to Alice?

It's 29 years since I did the West Macdonnells, so I don't know whether a 4WD would be essential - out to Glen Helen - down to Gosse - across to Hermannsburg - possibly in to Finke Gorge - back to Alice. What do you experts reckon?

Thanks to anyone who replies!

You wont get into Finke Gorge with a 2wd unless you are a local..lol Other places mentioned are 2wd friendly.

You may be able to hire a van of some sorts in Alice for a return trip. There's nothing that grand at Yulara AFAIK.

Hi Fizz

Not much to hire at Yulara AFAIK, but why not fly your uncle to Alice Springs then drive to Yulara/Uluru. Then you can visit the West McDonnells via Kings Canyon and the Mereenie Loop, before returning the vehicle to Alice Springs. Palm Valley requires a 4WD, but you could make it if you are lucky in a 2WD (not a hire one though or you'll void the insurance). Finke Gorge requires a 4WD as nothing else has enough ground clearance or can cope with the river sand (sure some of the locals do it in 2WDs but they don't get long out of each vehicle!!)

Cheers

Thanks guys.

Problem is we'll be getting to Uluru via Anne Beadell, Connie Sue, and abandoned GB. Might have to change plans
