Wife is starting to get stressed, which happens everytime I go away.... why.... because I place all my gear for upcoming trip (33days) in the lounge room. This starts at least a month out from departure and builds to a walking path only.
I
check the gear, remove stuff, then add other stuff, etc etc until I have what I feel is the right gear for "that" trip.
The wife during this time complains and complains about the mess I make "of course" being a stirer I load it up a bit for some entertainment LOL ........ its like fishing and the bites are free flowing.
So how do others deal with packing ....... as a "loner" or is it a toss in and she be right method.

Most of my gear is permanately packed ready to chuck in to the trailer or vehicle. Only main items needed to pack is the food and clothes and possibly stuff for the kids.
SWMBO does SFA in the packing department, but the double garage floor doesn't permit her car to parked in it for about a week B4 we leave as I load the trailer in there as it is easier to connect up to the 4by when loaded on a solid floor.

That's an absolute crack up mate. Really love the method.
I do the list and organise the things we need.
The Leader of the Opposition is wonderful at fitting all the things into the space available. We're a good team together.
Cheers

Isn't it funny how different we all are. I can't fit a square box in a round hole but David can. I dont' think he knows how to use a pen but I'm a compulsive list writer. We too are a great team, but we just do it the other way round to you.
"Leader of the Opposition" - love that, I'll be using that too. Thanks :-)

Brian,
Tomorrow I will start to pack.
Some food, beer and other stuff.
Should only take a couple of hours.
Then the wife will be stress free for the next 5 months while I am away.

One of the advantages of having a "dedicated" camper trailer is that over time you add to and take from the store of camping equipment, until you have everything sorted to your personal satisfaction.
Then, you just leave it in the camper. No more "forgot to bring it this trip".
No need for a
check list, because it's already packed.
In my case, the only variables are food and clothing and "do I take the boat or not".
The boat rack is on the camper all the time and it's just a matter of "I am going near water so I better take the boat as well".
Makes trips all that less stressful and that's why I go away in the first place.

My wife packs the food into a copule of boxes. I get all the tools, spares, campig gear and clothes together (in that order) in the middle of the garage floor ( the 4by doesn't fit in). Her car stays in the yard for a week. When the time arrives to pack the 4by, I tell her to "bugger off" because at this stage she is a real pain in the rear!

I usually start packing a few days beforehand, it goes into the vehicle bit by bit. Last is the food and personal kit. Wife gets up at 2am, just to make sure I'm gone LOL

If you are crawling out of bed at 2AM, why bother going to bed at all?
It would be only 4 hours at most (better than none, I spose), although with the mate from Enzed coming across, there will be much to discuss.

Stu, its because I need to get to a particular place by the end of day 1. Previous experience has taught me all about those jumping
grey things after dark !
If I dont at least get a few hours, I might have to let him loose on the driving, and I'd probably end up in a sheep paddock.
Besides, I want to get him into rural Oz before he gets used to the
bright lights. That, and I want to tire him out, so that I don't hear how its just not very different LOL

They are also about early morning too.
I used to clean up a few around 1-3AM around
Morven-
Augathella in my HZ 1 tonner. We used to drive at night so we could see where we were going, and use all the road. Also there were less tourists then, and we could open the tap a bit.
Start looking out for them around
Chinchilla if you are going that way. If you have to hit one, line it up on a post of the bar, rather than dead centre or the edges. (I'm probably telling you what you already know here)

I drive like a little old lady much of the time. Not rushing if I don't have to. Will be dinner time when we reach
Roma. (Last chance for Maccas :)
Yes, I tend to travel slow enough to avoid em where I can, but I remember one time travelling
Morven to C'Ville in the dark at 40K, roadkill every 10m. One committed hari kari on the side of my vehicle at that speed ! Went to bed dreaming of the big one at the end of the track..nightmare stuff LOL

That's where I used to get them too, between
Morven and
Augathella, but we were travelling at a hundred and.....at the speed limit.

Yep, quite a few times we had to roll out the swag and
camp because the roos were too thick, just got off the road a few hundred metres, tied the dogs up around us, and went to bed.

I once drove 14k out from C'ville on the
Morven road and came
home. Too many roos. In fact it was so bad that every blade of grass beside the road seemed to have eyes.

All my darling wife has to do is pack her bag, she usually asks if we have enough food, milk bread vegs and stuff, I say yep plenty thinking all the time where I can buy it as the fridge is half full of beer hahaha, no we have no probs with getting organised as I am the one at
home and pack the camper trailer.
As we go away every school hols about every 10 weeks the trailer is usually always ready to go.
Cheers Bruce

But Im a little like you - i like having things out to look at and get rid of things....my sister is the same....for 6 months she had her backpack ready with half...no actually all of her wardrobe out on the floor, some in the bag...etc just for a 3 month trip!!!
Enjoy ya trip...enjoy the stir and she'll be right....

I know this is a tad anal but I use lists...not just any lists though. I have a packing spreadsheet with several sheets each for a different type of trip. lol Like the Cape trip had everything and the overnighter has less.

Lists are good; I don't care if it's anal! lol. Being organised makes it less stressful for me. I use one list with everything on it that I could possibly take camping, then for each particular trip I adjust the list to suit.

That's funny, Brian.
I have a big shed, but we may have to move soon so I might adopt your method.
I usually start checking the gear a few days before and start doing things like getting gas cylinders filled, buy spare batteries for torches etc. When the family comes along, packing all the gear into the car is a real 'art' and the rest of the family must leave the 'delicate genius' alone and not speak to him until we are in the car and driving LOL

I'm a "she'll be right" sort of packer the night before. So long as I remember the matches/lighter (as I am a non smoker they are often forgot) I figure the rest can be sorted if something is forgotten. A lot of my stuff is in the car permanently but the add ons like a towel or the camera are often left behind. These items can usually be replaced with other items you do have. ie: no towel but have t-shirt.....t-shirt becomes towel ...... you get the drift, don't stress and it'll be alright on the night. Sounds a bit like the talk my old man had to me before my first "big date".
Cheers, Trevor.

Lists hmm don't think I really have one other than
Vehicle
campingFishing
Me
Food
BEER
Not in order of priority :) :)
LOL she is starting to get bleep already and only day 3 quicker than usual she must be aging badly LOL ....... who was it that said they would sort me out in my packing style LOL love a challange.
Its "not" the packing per say but a mans gotta make his own humour and a little wind up of the lady ...... cracks me up internally:).
By days end should be good tent and
camping gear to add :).
