Hi,

Just 2 weeks until we leave for the above places. Travelling from Newcastle via Bourke to Tibooburra & Sturt N/P. After checking out the N/P & Milparinka going to Innamincka via Cameron Corner. Then to Coongie Lake if road open & back home via Strzelecki Track & Broken Hill.

Does anyone know of the current conditions - particularly Bourke/Tibooburra via Wanaaring road. Also Bore Track (through Bollards Lagoon) & Old Strzelecki track.

Any tips on hot spots? Where is the best place to camp at Innamincka?

Thanks, Willy

This site will give you up to date info about what roads are open, but I would think at the moment most should be.

Going down the Strex to return via Broken Hill is a long way around and there is more to see if you turn off the Strez just south of Montecolina Bore and head down past Balcanoona, Lake Frome and down into Yunta.

I really like the Bore Track it is a very nice drive with some interesting scenery, it feel more remote than the Strez and saves a bit of time.

Not sure if the bus tour around Bourke is still going but if so it is worth doing, also take the time to have a look at the Jandra while in Bourke.

Staying in the Albert Hotel in Milparinka is an interesting change to camping and will open your eyes a little too. Check out all the touristy stuff in and around Milparinka too, Pooles Grave etc.

As far as camping at Innamincka is concerned the Town Common takes a lot of beating. Get there a little ealy and grab a spot right on the river. Check out the pics on my members rig page to get an idea.

Thanks Duncs,

We were intending to take the route you suggested down to Yunta. We will camp at Montecolina Bore - where is a good place to camp next down that route?

You could easily do Montecolina to Broken Hill in the day if you need to. There is a reasonable camp in a bend of a creek just north of Yunta if you want it or you could go in to Chambers Gorge. Which is about half way from Montecolina to Yunta. Bit of a side trip though.

Chambers is one of my favourite spots and pics on my rig page show us camped there. Go as far as is legal down the gorge and turn up the hill to your left when you reach the sign that says no vehicles beyond this point. Take a walk down the gorge with your camera and check out the Aboriginal art up a side creek.

Just got back from trip. Vic to Tibooburra, Fort Grey, Cameron's Corner, Bore Track, Dig Tree, Innamincka, Coongie Lakes (Fantastic), Arkaroola, Warraweena, Wilpena, home. Every track open and dry. Bore track a bit sandy in places. I was towing camper and had no trouble. Sandy in a couple of places around Coongie, but I didn't have the camper in tow. Camped at Broken Hill (caravan Park) Fort Grey, Innamincka Common area, Coongie Lakes beside Coopers Creek (there is a drop toilet there, down around the lakes I didn't see any toilets, get permits from general store in Innamincka), Arkaroola (caravan park), Warraweena (exploroz get together), Wilpena (caravan park).

The best source of info up there is the Trading Post staff (they actually look after the road open / road closed signs - IE - talk to a local) - you'll be lucky if the Nat Parks mob answer a phone (and in their office area in the old inland mission, they display road condition reports that are literally months old) - when there recently, we had a first hand account from a local of the debacle up there about 8 weeks back when it rained - organisation of information for stranded travellers was a farce apparently - seems you talk to a local who knows, or someone who has just driven into town, or work it out for yourself.
We reckon the town common camping is as good as any when its quiet - if a bit crowded, Cullyamurra, Policemans waterholes etc. are good.
Coongie is currently gazetted as open, but a few sploshy spots it seems. Might be damned cold up there too and fires aren't allowed. Have a good 'un.

We were at Coongie a couple of months ago, and it was great. Travel was easy - the few waterholes on the track had good chicken tracks.

If you really must have a fire, go back to Kudriemichie out station, about 30 km before the lake. Good camp areas there along the Cooper branch that goes to the lake, and fires are allowed. We just camped along the lake for a couple of nights and traded off the lack of fire for a magic setting.

As for Innaminka, Collyamurra Waterhole CG is about 8 km long and you can get a river side camp away from other people. Fires are permitted - buy the wood at the Trading Post if you can't find anywhere to pick it up.

We camped at the Dig Tree too - that was nice.

Have a great trip Willy - its magic country

Its a cold day - don't want to go outside - just threw a couple of pics up on the web - Queerbiddie waterhole, by the town common (just in front of the pub, so to speak) and a wet patch in the track out to the Cullyamurra waterhole. From 3 weeks back.

Hi Willy.
As mentioned in post 47684, just arrived home from Tibooburra. Road from Bourke to Tib is ok(plenty of dust, now have to clean out camper & pajero!!).
All the roads in Sturt N/P are now open(they have received over 12" rain & the country side is quite green).
We based ourselves at the Granites Caravan Park inTib(showers & laundry)> I just hope that the winds have dropped off. Last week they could have blown a dog off its lead.
Enjoy your trip.
Regards.
Vince

willy,
we travelled down from Birdsville to Innamincka via Cordillo downs and then the bore track to Cameron corner on july 7th.
The bore track is in flower and the best i have seen in years. The wanaaring road from Tibooburra is a bit rough to wanaaring but from there to Bourke was very good. We also did coongie lake for two days it was great, highly recommend.

Hope this is of help to you.

Hows it going Willy,

Just travelled from Innaminka to Bourke last week,

The worst part was Tibooburra-Wanaaring , got a puncture / blowout , really have to slow right down for the rocky sections / wash outs. The guy at the shop at Wanaaring was telling me he is making heaps out of tyres, cause the track is so bad.

If you stay In Tibooburra go for a feed early if you want to eat out , couldnt get a start at either pub cause of big groups , ended up at the roadhouse , got good food and a couple of beers though ! Saw some people camped just inside the last gate of Sturt NP on the right heading toward Tibooburra, looked like a good spot. The caravan park wasnt that crash hot ( more the camp area than the van area ), but needed a hot shower.

Innamincka , stayed at they town common right on the water for the sum of $5 , get your fire wood before you get there ! Wasnt crowded , saw people heading out the North side of town with wood on their vehicles to camp as well.

Hope this helps , and you have a good time.

Glenn.

I just got back from Innamincka this afternoon to a very cold Mount Gambier. The weather at Innamincka was superb. Shorts, tee shirt and thongs during the day. A bit cold at night but our swags were set up for the cold so we were warm and comfortable. The roads were in good condition when we first got up there but they have just had one of the busied school holiday periods for years and when we left the roads had deteriorated quite a bit, particularly to the burke and Wills bridge and Dig Tree. Bull dust holes appearing everywhere. We came back on the Strzelecki and it was pretty good. The only downside was the fishing. There was nothing happening. We fished solidly up and down the Creek in all our favourite places for over two weeks and only caught two sized Yellowbelly and six good sized Grunter. Threw heaps of littlies back. It is interesting to note that the Walkers Crossing track was closed at the Innamincka end but we were told it was open from the Birdsville end. A number of people we talked to came down it from Birdsville and said it was pretty easy.
And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended, And at night the wondrous glory of the everlasting stars. Clancy of the Overflow.

Just came back from trip on Monday from Camerons Corner.

I went from Thargominda to Noccundra, Camerons Corner then to Innaminka, Cuddapin, Windorah, Quilpie and back to Brisbane.

Road conditions between the Corner and Innaminka are very good at the moment. Only a few corrogated areas. Some water about on the main tracks as you will see. Side tracks are well formed and cause no issues. Some look like they have been in use for a while.

Windflowers are also out in full bloom around Innaminka - in particular entry into Burkes Grave (Burke and Wills). Great photo opp. Never seen them out like that before. GPS location for Burkes Grave: S 27 43.350 E 140 46.703.
